Best Pineapple Cake in Taiwan and the world is hands down: Chia Te Bakery. They've got the right blend of pastry in the crust and sweetness to their pineapple filling. Love it so much.

鳳梨酥 is the literal translation of pineapple cake, the narration makes it sound like it's unique to this shop. Also perhaps be more conscious about traditional vs simplified Chinese for different regions? I do enjoy these goldthread videos but seems a bit whitewashed sometimes

But everyone love pineapple cake from Taiwan, but almost no one likes the American fruit cake. Fruit cakes is an American Holiday Joke. Some are made so hard that they are used as door stop after the holidays. :) The original Pineapple cake is not tart. The traditional recipe mixes pineapple with sugared dry watermelon (traditional Taiwanese candy) to take away the tartness. However, the tart "raw" pineapple cake became all the rage within the last 1-2 decades or so.

tried many brand of taiwanese pineapple cakes from cheap to super expensive. but they are not as good as indonesian nastar cake. it's such a shame indonesian doesnt promote this cake even more. while taiwanese fenglishu, which is basically the same, being sold at premium price, if you have a chance buy and compare them.

The shell is different and jam is probably different too. Nastar looks like Cantonese influenced flaky traditional Chinese pastry rather than British/Scottish styled short bread crisp/cookies used in Taiwanese pineapple cake. You can find pineapple pastry very similar to Nastar in Cantonese dim sum. The way you serve them and eat them are probably different too. But anyway, the origination probably all came from immigrants from Hokkien or Canton. High quality Taiwanese pineapple cakes are supposed to be paired with high quality Oolong tea, which is a semi-fermented tea, an artisan tea that is somewhere between green and black tea. With Cantonese/Indonesian version, you probably paired it with Pu-Er or some other kind of black or fully fermented tea.
