Love the review and today's followup. Thank you to both Kristi and you. I now wanna find a way to get to listen to a pair. Except I am also sort of scared to do so, simply because I fear what I have now won't feel good enough anymore. I once had the privilege of listening to a set of Watt Puppy and even speaking to Mr. David Wilson. That was years ago and I was just past being a teenager, but the experience was something that inspired me to think of audio gear as more that for background music + occasional parties - something I am eternally grateful for. However I also haven't been able to replicate the impact of hearing the Watt Puppies, however I can rationalize it to be that at the time I must have been easier to impress (and also having perfect young hearing).

@@bzdtemp The law of diminishing returns apply - if you already have a great set of speakers, and $150K is a lot of money to you, you'll probably be fine. These are really for the super wealthy who don't think twice about dropping the price of a decent house on an audio system. As you note, at some point, especially once you are middle aged or past - your ears become the weakest link.

It's the dumbest thing a person can do, and they try to justify it as some of your viewers suggested "but you're going to own it " , "it's your hobby it's a good investment" It's the dumbest mindset you can possibly have. It’s impossible for people to understand the feeling you have when you hear a system at this level., unless they experience it for themselves. You stop analyzing… Is there enough bass, is there too much? How is the mid range? How is the imaging? You just enjoy the music , and you are no longer analyzing the equipment. Very few people have the chance to hear a sound so effortless, detailed, and engaging. You did a excellent job describing this in words. But at the end of the day, you have to experience it for yourself. As an AV installer , I only have two customers that have systems like this. Every time I go back and listen to them, I am always impressed! This doesn’t happen often! But it does it every time I have the privilege to hear them. Keep up the excellent work, both of you!
@tonto10bears15 күн бұрын
I agree. The first system I ever heard (at this level) was in 1989: a pair of Infinite Kappa 9s driven by Yamaha electronics, MX-1000 amps for each speaker, etc. That experience has stuck with me to this day. It is hard to describe something like that to someone that just doesn't have any context. It was truly eye-opening and put me firmly on the audiophile journey.

I find the whole debate around things like PEQ, DSP, room correction, etc. laughable. As a long time live sound FOH engineer and recording guy, these technologies are broadly used in both live audio and nearly every recording studio in the world and are essential to the production of the source material they try to defend so preciously. Bottom line - they’re like any other tool. It can be used well or badly, depending on the skill and knowledge of the user.

I love the conversation about living life with less. The 90s are a dream speaker. They’re a dream, one that makes you think harder, do better and achieve more than you thought was possible. But, although it may be hard to go back, I still think you can very much learn to love it again in a different way with a different understanding of that love and relationship. I had a pickup truck I adored a while back, till I got in a wreck and it was totaled. Couldn’t get a new one that’s the same, it’s not made anymore, not buying it used either. So I drive an old cop Crown Vic. Compared to pickup I had, it’s a pos. But I love it nonetheless. It’s super fun, it’s smaller, can fit an entire mob in the trunk and people really avoid cutting me off in it. Haha. The problem is with this hobby right now is that people take everything far too closely to their heart and think their opinion is required to be heard AND used as a guideline of some sort. Basically no common sense. If I truly had the cash for these speakers, I’d get them in a heart beat. But some things should stay a dream sometimes. You guys are the most common sense people in this hobby and most others as well, and that’s why I love listening to you and these conversations. Lovely video, going to go finish it with a second cup of fancy a** coffee I spend far too much money on 😂 Happy Friday y’all! Hope everyone is well, stay safe Cali, stay safe everyone with all the craziness that’s happening.

Oh and anyone saying that active speakers aren’t the future, is full of it. I honestly can’t wait for active speakers to be the primary thing, while passive speakers and audio equipment is a very small niche product.

@andrewrobinsonreviews17 күн бұрын
I think you raise an interesting point or thought, which is the idea that every product, in this case, a speaker, can be best or good for everyone in a different way. However, we live in a pass-fail world, it seems, void of grey or nuance, and as a result, there isn't a lot of room for variety. Something either is, or it isn't. And the deciding factor for win or lose, pass or fail, rarely has anything to do with merit but rather opinion.
@gavriushka17 күн бұрын
@@andrewrobinsonreviews exactly. Just sit your butts down and listen to the music rather than the speakers. They’re just a tool. Just like a better power drill is just a tool. Sure it’ll drill better or faster or more reliably, but it’s still a tool that allows you to hang that picture your wife has been nagging you to hang for the last 7 months.
@gavriushka17 күн бұрын
@@LeezahB oh absolutely. But from both the user and business perspective, active speakers will take this from a pretty niche hobby (don’t count soundbars, as they’re already what I’m talking about in the comment), to the new market domination. I guarantee you, a lot more people would jump into speakers vs soundbars, if they were just as easy to setup as those soundbars.

I remember owning the B&W 805 matrix speakers back in the 90"s. They were my first high end speaker, $1500 and paired with a Carver M4.0T. I was in awe. I could hear every nuance. Chills were commonplace with the soundstage just perfect, deep and wide. Back then, I was as giddy as you are with the 90s. But alas, my experience today is not the same. My 805 speakers were tired so I rebuilt the crossovers and replaced the tweeters. The current Marantz AV/Emotiva performs well enough, but no giddy. I've settled and I'm haunted by the past. Its like I lost my first love and I'll never get her back. Maybe 804D's would help.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Robinson (sorry Kristi, but I really had to write it like that, I love this song!), I´ve been watching your reviews since the very beginning and in one of your first videos Andrew already mentioned the 90s, and that he really would like to be able to test them - and as I am a B&O-Boy as well, I have been looking forward to seeing you 2 exactly the way it happened now - and I loved it! Thank you so much for this review. Maybe I should mention, that I´m in the nice position to or at least have owned almost every B&O Speaker (Beosound 1, 2, A1 2nd Gen, Explore, Emerge, A5, Level, Balance, A9, Beolab 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 18, 20, 28) except for the 50s and 90s, but I do know those 2 very well, as my dealer spent so much time listening to them with me next to him in his shop (Thanks to Semir and Wolfgang at this point! I really appreciate your patience with me!). And I have to say, that I prefer the sound of my Beolab 5 Mk3´s to the sound of the 50s and 90s. But (!) as always, it really depends on the room. So maybe - in my living room, the 90s would sound better than the 5s. But in my dealer´s shop, they don´t. The Beolab 5s - for me - are ( but only when driven digitally with Beosound Core and digital COAX) much warmer, fuller and bassier (which is, what I prefer) and really give you the feeling of beeing at a live-show. Just saying :D I totally understand that you both love the 90s and I hope, that one day, I will have a pair of them in my house. They are kind of "newer" 5s and give you (in combination with the Beoconnect Core) more options for this moment - but/because(!) - maybe you remember the money-back-thing with the 5s a few months ago (15k for your old 5s if you buy a pair of 50s or 90s)- and - it might be, that there will be a new role-out (like with the Beosound 9000c´s) of Beolab 5s with a digital update - so maybe - wait for the "new" (maybe so called) Beolab 5c´s and check them vs. the 90s, because they could be the next BIG thing of B&O ;) So I really would love to see you with the 50s, but/and - you probably should try the 5(c)s as well - I guess you will love them, too :) All the best from Austria (that little country next to Switzerland...) - and please keep on doing, what you do, because it´s absolutely amazing, Alex

In regard to dsp have you tried convolution using tools like Acourate or Focus Fidelity (easier) among others that address not only FR but the impulse/step response, time, phase etc. PEQ is so 2000 😂 just kidding sort of but seriously give it a try if you haven’t - would love to hear your thoughts.

The 50’s will not get you near the magic of the 90 imho. I have listened to both for a extended period

Great episode! I really enjoyed it, I can only imagine having a set of 90 over for Christmas! ps I believe they 90s are actually capable to 18.000 watt per speaker (1/2 ms) it was mentioned in a vid about the Development of the 90s, if you didn't watch it already defiantly try to see if you can squeeze it in! Thank you for the vids and on to another great year!

The $200 I spent a year ago to get an old pair of Mirage SM-1s refoamed (which came into my care for free) makes me feel great every time I put a record on. No, they're not even in the same sport as the 90s, but they sound pretty great. If I were *still paying for my speakers* I think that would intrude on my enjoyment. If I were *struggling* to pay for them, I don't think I'd even want to listen to music as much.

Thats so awesome for sharing your thoughts with us you had with these awesome speakers! Im glad for you that you have had the chance to listen to them I kinda have the same ""issue"" like you said when it comes to learn to listen music again I bought the Beoplay EX in Ear from B&O and damn... i love them soo much Its not like re - listen my music for the first time again.. its more like a Re - Experience or a whole new one I think i wont ever love a other Headphone so much That accuracy and precise sound signiture is so great - its a joke Worth all the Money

Thank you for talking about how it is not smart to take out a loan for speakers! I see this in every hobby I have. Young people think that you need to have what ever the best is and the experts are using right from day 1. So that might be $30,000 speakers or it might be a $15,000 rifle, or a $14,000 amateur radio. Why? Because they get almost all of their information from KZbin and all they see is people using the finest gear on the earth. So good on you for telling people to be finacialy smart and responsible!

The Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 5 speakers never failed to impress and we're considered outrageously expensive at the time.

The best Speaker I've heard includes Anthony Gallo 3.5 with naim equipment and a pair of Beolab 28. The presentation off a live stage is something else.

31:49 Every amp is trying to increase voltage of the original signal. The result is an increase is SPL generated by the speaker. The wattage represents “work” capacity of that amplifier. If you’re listening at 90dB with the amp at 10 watts and your goal is to get louder, to say, 100dB, you’ll need a 100W of “work capacity” to do so. If your amp can do no more amplifying because it’s reached the technical limit of its capacity, you get clipping or squaring of the original signal. This is why having more watts than needed within an amp are so important. You don’t want to get into a situation where your SPL goals are increasing but your wattage capacity (ability to do that work) is at its limit

Follow-up question on the comment about "if music will ever sound the same." Do you guys have any regrets spending time with the 90s now that you're back to your speakers you had set up previously? Also, will we start seeing more high-end product reviews such as PS Audio or maybe even Magico in the future?

Gladiator Soundtrack is one of my all-time favourites! It’s well-recorded and super dramatic. Typical Hans Zimmer. If you’re into that, and you have big speakers or a subwoofer for extended bass, check out:- - Hans Zimmer live (24bit 48k on Apple Music) - Human (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - The Red Turtle (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - Armand Amar - Home All would be awesome on the Beolab 90s. I have to make do with my Kef L50s and KC62 subwoofer, which are very impressive in a small room, producing very powerful low bass with exceptional imaging.

For me the best means not thinking about better cables, amplifiers, etc. Just be done with all of that, listen and enjoy. I get that with my Lipinski Sound Speakers. They blew me away when I bought them and I never heard better.

Follow-up on the wattage question...did you have to put the monthly electric bill on your charge card after using those massive speakers? 😁
@TheMirolab14 күн бұрын
Actually the bigger the speaker, the LESS power they need to achieve a certain volume level. These won’t draw any more power than, say, a big tube amp, or even more stupid, a big class-A amplifier.

16,400 watts a pair , Jesus that would power the 🦇 Batmobile from the Batcave to Gotham city and back on one charge for two and a half months !!!

I'll say, I got my 2000A about 10 months ago, did a 0% finance for a year, just about to pay it off. I wouldn't have had the cash in hand to buy it. But I don't regret it, and plan to keep it for decades to come. 🤷♂️
@andrewrobinsonreviews17 күн бұрын
So long as you pay off the balance BEFORE the 12-month mark, you're good. Many folks think they will, but statistically, rarely do and, as a result, get hit with compound interest that spirals quickly, thus trapping them in debt.

I think that what most impresses me about the 90s is that it doesn’t have the bass problem that you hade the Def Tech DM80s. I think that’s what really impresses me. I know price and dsp, but I wonder if it would be possible to recreate 90% of that sound quality and a good streaming DAC to create the HDMI and streaming capabilities that the Beolab Core gives.

Those speakers started at 40/50 grand at launch wish I had the balls to pull the trigger then,but more than double the price with no upgrade is just unreachable for most now ,I love them and B&O are my go to but are they taking the piss now with price .?
@bzdtemp16 күн бұрын
Are you sure about the 40/50 grand, sounds like the price per speaker? Looks to me as it was more 80/85 grand. There is a Stereophile review of them from December 2016 where they list the prices as 85K for a pair. Inflation and exchange rates matters a good deal, so the amounts of today are not extreme. In fact now may be a good time to buy, since if Trump does what he says it will make a substantial difference.
