F4's are the original badass. Twin J79's gave it the world air speed record. Serving with the 31st TTW @ Homestead AFB got my first seat in the F4D's. Flying it was so smooth in all flight attitudes. For such a "flying brick" she overwhelmed with power. Got to pull 6 G's which was frowned upon, but she was more than capable. Miss those days.

The arresting hook on the F-4 was something the Air Force wanted to remove because it weighed over 500 lbs. However, that would create a weight and balance problem being so far aft of the center of gravity. So the Air Force, realizing they were stuck with it, decided to use it in emergencies. They installed arresting cables at the approach end of runways for use by battle damaged phantoms. These were one time use kits. Pilots liked the improved odds of not becoming a crispy critter or careening into big stuff. The landing gear was rugged, so finesse wasn't required. The crash crew could pre-position based on where the cable would stop the plane. No need to chase the plane down the runway wasting time.

Both the F-104 and F-105 had arresting hooks; not sure why the Air Force would want the hook on the F-4 left off. The added weight doesn't make sense. In my experience, aircraft barriers ("Barrier Maintenance" is a function of USAF Civil Engineering) using cables or chains are generally NOT one-time use. Barriers involving nets probably are, though. Barrier installation can be semi-permanent or mobile, so yeah, they're pre-positioned.

There is another plane that likely had just as much influence on the F-4 as the F3H, but is often forgotten despite being built between the Demon and the Phantom II. I'm talking of course about the McDonnell F-101B Voodoo. Most don't consider it because, well, it's an Air Force plane, but in many ways the Voodoo is very close to the F-4: the tandem seating, the general layout, the missile-only armament, McDonnell even proposed upgrading it with J-79's roughly around the same time they proposed the F4H to the Navy. In my mind there are just too many coincidences that there's no way there wasn't some bleed-over between the two planes.

I grew up next to a Marine Corps Air Base and my dad was friends with a F4 squadron "captain"? Idk what the official rank is, but he was the pilot "boss". This was back in like 87'. I got to go and sit in a Phantom and the pilot showed me all the controls. And my dad took some pics. Years later when they transitioned to F18s, I got to go sit in one of those too. I also got to go in the simulator (which in the early 90s was just a grid of green lines) And my dad's friend the pilot guided me to fly over and bomb Honolulu. Lol. I even landed without incident! When I was a kid and got really sick my parents would get me a 1:72 scale model plane to build. My favorites I had built were the P51, P40, the hellcat, and the 110 Messershmit. (Sry can't spell lol) I live by Pearl Harbor and they have an aviation museum there with all kinds of rare planes. I learned there that the first recorded death of a Japanese pilot in ww2 happened on the island of ni'ihau its a very small island and the western most of the Hawaiian island chain. It's private and only native Hawaiians are allowed to live there. Apparently one of the Japanese pilot's Zero got damaged in the PH attack and had to crash land there. He landed in a farmers taro patch and the BIG Hawaiian did not like this, so he got ahold of the pilot and smashed his head in against a rock wall. Lol. TL;DR: I LOVE the F4! The tail design, everything about it is so unique. Can't wait to watch this episode. Love the channel, keep up the good work!

Please make more videos on obscure aircraft designs such as South African Atlas Carver and AIDC F-CK 1 Ching Kuo(Also known as Indigenous Defense Fighter). Reasons : 1. The Atlas Carver became the first domestic 4th gen lightweight fighter jet developed in South Africa, mainly used as a deterrent against the MIG-23 and possible MIG-29 possessed by Northern Neighbours, it uses outdated Snecma Atas engine, Atlas Carver was not put into production after the imports of SAAB Gripen was available sometime after the Apartheid policies were abolished. 2. The Indigenous Defense Fighter is a F1-6 derivative but with characteristics borrowed from F-5 Freedom Fighter and F/A-18 Legacy Hornets. This lightweight fighter jet is developed after the imports of F-20, F-16/79 and F/A-18L was not approved by United States. The Indigenous Defense Fighter was the first domestic Asian 4th gen jet made into service, unfortunately it often overshadowed by other domestic Chinese designs such as J-10 and JF-17.

Was the gun really much needed firepower when tactics far outweighed the benefit? Gun kills were very rare compared to missiles if I remember
@pyronuke47682 ай бұрын
The gun on the F-4 is a bit of a complicated process. There's people who'll tell you that if it had a gun from the start it would have dominated, but the situation was far more nuanced than that. For starters, In the early days of Rolling Thunder most pilots didn't receive much training on how to dogfight, and when they did it was usually against other F-4's. Another issue was maintenance on the missiles were pretty appalling; components weren't handled with as much care as they should've, they were often left exposed to the elements, and recommendations to remove and inspect missiles between every flight were often ignored. Combined with restrictive rules of engagement and shit hit the fan really fast. (Another thing that shouldn't be forgotten is North Vietnamese ground controllers also turned out to be really good at setting up ambushes early on.) So by the time they finally got around to mounting guns on F-4's a lot of these other issues were also being addressed, and while it did take part in downing enemy planes by this point it was more effective as a moral booster.
@CraigSummers-ci7nt2 ай бұрын
Too many close in fights (especially against Mig17s in Viet Nam) had too many missed opportunities . I do believe that there was a minimum range needed to lock on a sidewinder, and enemy aircraft could get in and be safe. The gun covered this problem. And that’s why you see guns even on today’s fighters.
@DefaultProphet2 ай бұрын
@@CraigSummers-ci7nt I'm talking about after they put a gun back on it. The tactics they taught the pilots trumped any benefit the gun had as evidence by the very small number of gun kills vs missile kills AFTER they had guns

I struggle to call the F-4 a true multirole aircraft, its more like semi-multirole (at least in it's heyday, the ones in the late 70's and 80's were a bit better). The reason for this is you can't just flip a switch and go from air-to-air to air-to-ground like you can in a F-16 or F-18. The Phantom II had to be set up hours in advance for the planned mission, a big part is because the radar had to be tuned by hand for the role prior to the mission, and it wasn't easy to try to change modes in mid flight. Secondly, it wasn't the best dogfighter; it could handle itself ok, but if caught with it's pants down like was so often the case in Vietnam it would really struggle, especially when loaded down with bombs (having to dich them and ruining the strike mission), not to mention the reliability of the missiles at the time. Third and finally, while it could carry a lot of ordance it's short loiter time was a very common complaint from those on the ground. So while I fully believe the F-4 Phantom II was a step in the right direction it was still about two decades away from true multirole. It's like saying American Football is Rugby -- close, but not quite there.

I've been at the departure end of the runway for many a two-ship F-4 ZULU alert scramble. That's pretty loud, but it pales next to the F-111.

My Uncle, Tom Lang has a real soft spot for the F-4 in SouthEast Asian camouflage. This video might be of interest to him.

My little A4 with a full fuel load, ammo, bombs and plane still weighed less than just the fuel load of the F4

A-4 is a great airplane, I knew someone who flew them in Vietnam and it’s an aircraft I need to do a video on. Thanks for commenting!

I personally think that the F-4 Phantom ii evolved from the F-3H Demon and the F-101 Voodoo.

If only they'd given her a cannon from the get-go. That ommission was in-excusable. Other than that, for it's time, it was a very good military aircraft.

I see the F4 as the jet version of the P40

The F-15 is better but the F-4 is a badass fighter
