I may not be as knowledgeable about music composition, but Inon Zur's work on Fallout has always stood out to me. In my interpretation, the main theme of Fallout conveys a sense of "Retaining Hope in a Bleak and Devastated World" or a dichotomy of "Tragedy and Hope," with a serious undertone that fits the setting perfectly. The powerful factions with conflicting goals and ideas, all vying for control of the wasteland, and giving a sense of impending violence and war all in the name of rebuilding. It's like what Maximus the TV series said, "Everybody wants to save the world, they just don't agree on how." or at the start of every game, "War... War Never Changes". Inon Zur's theme perfectly encapsulates this feeling to me.

Since you asked to share our two cents about the old games, my favorite Fallout 1 theme is an ambient piece named "Metallic Monks" which sets the mood for an encounter with everybody's favorite tech-priests, the Brotherhood of Steel The sound design is impeccable and you can practically tell everything about the faction from the supporting samples used. Air raid sirens, marching drums, morse code, cavernous echoes, dripping water, ominous chants. Notably, it's a true ambient piece - there's no structure to speak of, just an echoing fog of synthesized war sounds. This is true of most Fallout 1 tracks, which is fitting as chronologically it's set second closest to the Great War - the shellshocked remnants of humanity still have yet to settle into post-war hierarchies. In Fallout 2 things get more interesting in pretty much every way imaginable. Several more decades pass and there's suddenly a lot going on in the wasteland. This is best embodied by a track called My Chrysalis Highwayman, which is an airy yet melancholy rock piece that you expect to play on the car stereo as you drive for days through the open desert in search of a new civilization.

4's version of the theme, to me anyway sounds more somber, but there is that part that sounds almost hopeful, i think that was the intention, to show that even in the darkest of pain, there is glimmer of hope, of humanity in world that destroyed humanity and is trying to rebuild what was lost.

Would love to hear more of your thoughts towards the soundtracks of the classic game OST of Fallout 1. They portray the setting of their locations very well and are far more than just ambient tracks. Despite them being replayed over and over for the locations you're in, you never get sick of hearing them because of how they were composed. My favorite one is Radiation Storm, a very chilling track that's accompanied by the invisible dangers of the wasteland and a reminder of the horrors of war.

You can say whatever you want about Fallout 4 and how bad it’s mechanics and story aspects are in comparison to other titles in the series, but it’s main theme is the best by far because for its more hopeful arrangement. Just because you journey through the harsh reality that is the Commonwealth and all it’s dangers doesn’t mean all hope is lost.

Tbh, i do not understand the hate for fo4 at all. Imo, they are all good games, but mechanics-wise and honestly story wise, for is the best of all of them. The mechanics are much more intuitive and the story is 10 times more cohesive. I LOVE F:NV, but the story is so all over the place and i feel like half of the time it is hard to follow what the heck is even happening. Plus, literally all the factions in F:NV are just flat out evil/genocidal/facistic or just want to force their rule and control over everyone else (even if it is to help them). At least in Fo4, you have the Railroad which, though naive, are the only faction that has entirely good intentions.
@LightningDeusDax
@LightningDeusDax 7 ай бұрын
@@AuroraTheAvali3735 I think the reason why many veteran player hate Fallout 4 is the lacking main story/ side stories and the game‘s reduced RPG-elements. Fallout 4 is the first game I played from this series and it is my favourite of the bunch, mainly because of the weapons/armour customisation and settlements building, but in comparison to its predecessors, it got pretty simplified in its other gameplay components. In other words, Bethesda went the lazy route in many aspects like dialogue outcomes, random encounters, perks, immersive gameplay, factions, etc. But even after all of that, I would call it a diamond in the rough which could have been a masterpiece if it was given more time to get refined.

@@LightningDeusDax I think you hit the nail on the head, in some areas it got full attention but the other parts was thin and rushed. The story and factions are good examples of that, especially when compared to other stories that were more complex and hit heavy on the theme.

theres also something to be said about how because fall out is so desperate- theres much around yet little to build with- theres a mirror image in choosing a stripped down approach to the amount of instruments and sustain in the ambience. the complexities added often not always sitting nice rubbing up against it like the occasional enemy faction or monster complicating what should be alot more simple. i like to do that trick to using more instruments to imply bigger stakes or emphasize the subject. by just using th piano and ambience theres alot of dead air- like the wasteland but also like the wealth of possibilities before you. theres much to do but while everything seems out of order- its all connected (by the very simple notes being played for long stretches of time) you can then read the extra repetition of the phrase to imply say that it comes in waves. a back n forth rather than a linear state. theres also something oddly nostalgic about the phrase. it fits in oddly well with the old 1920s stuff.

The Main Theme of FallOut 4 is the most powerful in my opinion. The moment when you activate the doorunlocking system moments before leaving Vault 111, you have emmidiately the feeling of "Here I am again, time to go HOME!". I can play this particular section over and over again, even just listen to this theme here in your video, kinda makes me "freeze" along my arms and neck. Afterwards when you actually have left the Vault seeing the "new world" of Boston state, the reaction of your character gasping in shock, then quicksafe, and turn back to the title and let it roll, with the main theme music and the camera moving along the garage of some red rocket station showing an in maintenence parked power armor... I´m not going to type further, feel it for yourself... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Edit: Also thanks for adding THIS: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWHToneQrZ52h8U !

As it starts with gloomy hope, it's like damn... I got my legs in their own place after all that... Then you start seeing the world and how it has its legs placed. And thats just for the legs... Then you may wonder what is the rest of the theme about... Hands... Poker hands. Also the theme expects you to take the clue for what it is for. You already got your idea, and so. They do too, so in a sense it might even taunt some vault dwellers to take the challenge. To show who ever made the theme that they can play it better.

Bethesda game music always sounds better than the game. Sometimes it's even TOO better than the game. And all because there is a musical genius working in Bethesda... Todd Howard. The man who always says it's his games begin not with concepts, not with models, but with MUSIC. That his games are made around music, and that the core of the game is not the gameplay, not the plot, not the mechanics - the core of the game will always be music. Zurr and Soul are the soul of the Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

What’s also interesting is that Lionmight’s interpretation is the opposite of the composer’s explanation. Lion explains the Fallout protagonists as starting out innocent and hopeful, only to be hit with the harsh realities of the wasteland. The composer however said it was “dread and then…hope!” To me Fallout is about fighting to keep that hope alive in a world full of darkness. It’s the naive nature of the protagonists that helps the stay positive in the face of constant strife. It’s what allows them to actually make a difference. What’s great about Fallout is that it’s different things to each person and any interpretation is correct

Forgettable because it's been a while since I played 3. Fallout 1 to me had the best sound tracks and song like Desert Winds, Vats of Goo, Followers Credo's, and Undergrounds troubles. Honestly the Fallout main theme is 100x better at giving me hope for America than the National Anthem. Probably because it doesnt involve fellating the shaft of country built on genocide and doesnt have versed that kind of glorify weapons on war. Fallout's whole thing is being anti imperialism and therefore anti war, as well as being in support of the idea that humanity will only survive if we look out for our fellow man. Theres a reason why Fallout 3 feels so gloomy and bleak while exploring until you pair up with Fawkes or some other companions; you are a lone wanderer. The times when you feel less gloomy are when youre in the main settlements Megaton, Rivet City, and even Underworld. Honestly Underworld is where it feels the most hopeful. A group of outcasts who still managed to find community with each other. Ghouls are treated like monsters but generally theyre the ones with the most humanity left. The times you see ghouls who are "evil" generally are due largely to the influences and cruelty of people who look like you and me.
