That sounds good in theory, but we know that eventually they are going to get back together so even that 7 episode arc is starting to feel like a stretch. I would say season 4 or 5 is when they really hit their stride and provided funniest episodes. If the show ended season 8, it would have been the best season. Everything is set in place for Ted to meet Tracy. All they had to do was have a final episode with Barney and Robin's wedding.

Season 2 is when the show established all of its best running gags and structural devices for episodes and genuinely does not have a single bad episode in the bunch, while more than two-thirds of the season is written exceptionally well in both it's comedic and emotional elements. Future seasons might be better at one or the other, but the show never quite finds the same perfect balance that season 2 has, though seasons 5 and 7 are also well written, albeit not quite as sharply as the 2nd

The problem with the first and second season is one: Robin. Because she is Ted's girlfriend (or future gf) she need to be "perfect" so we the audience can understand why he wants her. But later season she is more caotic and way way more funny. I think is something is similar with Rachel from friends, where she is this damsel in distress so Ross can be the hero, but after theirs relationship she becamos a more independent character and a more funny one

I feel that she benefitted a lot from the introduction of her past ( beginning with the slap bet ), especially the relationship with her father , and her partners outside the group , that show still that she had a great, if a bit rollercoaster-y, emotional development And I don't care what anyone says about the later seasons, Symphony of Illumination is fucking great

Also this is the first time the group literally breaks up more than once in a season & there are less fillers too.

Marshall wins the Slapbet, which is why he gets 5 slaps, not because of a technicality. Their bet was Barney saying it was porn and Marshall saying it wasn't porn.
@bendowson3124Ай бұрын
You're correct, it's kind of a "blink and you miss it" scenario but Barney did say "$20 that it's porn" and the even though they changed it to a slap bet, the bet was still the same.
@jsnike9125 күн бұрын
Correct and incorrect. Marshall does win the bet because it wasn’t porn. BUT he got the 5 slaps because Barney prematurely slapped Marshall thinking the “let’s go to the mall” video was the intro to a porno and thinking he won. Barney had the choice of 10 slaps right then and there or 5 over any point in time.

Agree. Season 2 is the best season _but_ the back 2/3 of season 1 is just as good. Season 3 matches the highest highs but it's like when a baseball player starts thinking of himself as a power hitter and swinging for the fences. The OPS stays the same but the doubles, walks and average all drop and eventually you start seeing more strikeouts (especially in the later seasons.) But in that 40 episode run from season 1 through season 2 everything is working.

As it is with everything, ideas will always grind down to a halt. S2 is the best because the options where still limitless at that point, anything could be turned into a sitcom short story and new layers of the characters coud be added on the go. But once you establish that Barney is the son an estranged father, you no longer have the option to make a story about Barney's dad being the original playboy. Once you establish Marshal and Lily's first meeting (and ted) it's too late to tell a different story about that. Point is once all story beats are in place the options quickly dwindle down to call backs and references. Which is why by the time we got to later seasons the show was pretty predictable compared to early on

Quite a few years ago i finished the show (im the type to let shows go several seasons before i watch it) And it was genuinely a sad moment. I had invested so much time and had grown to love the character so much. Its part of the reason im more of a TV show person than a Movie person. I like getting invested into characters and a story over an extended period of time. Really getting to know who they are. Thats why i hate these short lived series these days. HIMYM reminds me a little of Entourage. Both had well formed characters from day 1 and found their footing fairly quick in season 1 then rolled that momentum into essentially a perfect second season. But then both dramatically changed the chemistry right away in season 3 -- HIMYM with Gael and Entourage with Dom -- and while those arcs were short-lived and both shows continued to pump out good -- even great -- seasons and iconic episodes and moments, they never fully rediscovered that week-to-week season 2 magic and eventually declined in quality in the later seasons as they tried to live up to impossible expectations. Although Entourage had a much better ending.
@jordibargunoАй бұрын
Back then every season, would have 20 - 22 episodes, but you would end up with half of them being just filler episodes. I think things have improved, now they focus more on quality than quantity. The Penguin being a perfect example, 10 episodes not fat, just pure quality. If they had done 22 episodes, half the episodes would have taken away from the overall artistic value.
@claudiolentini5067Ай бұрын
That's partly true , however I would argue that well constructed "filler" episodes can do a lot in terms of establish themes, give the room to characters to develop and to arcs to resolve without seeming rushed Moreover, in the specific case of the earlier seasons of HYMYM , those apparently useless episodes also established character traits, bonds, and give hints for following arcs and situations, so they are very useful to complete and tie up the whole narrative. Really, you could make some great 18-20 episodes seasons even nowadays. But you need to approach the things differently, and to give the screenwriters and the directors the time to iron out the kinks , something that the platforms aren't doing
@jordibargunoАй бұрын
@claudiolentini5067 I think HIMYM is the perfect example of too much of a good thing. Had this show only had 5 seasons it would have had a smoother overall arc, and possibly a more satisfying ending, but they dragged it for too long. Breaking Bad could have probably dragged on for 3 more seasons, but thankfully it didn't, making it a satisfying overall show, not perfect, but they also didn't ruin it with greed of more episodes.
