The one that shocked me that no one brought up was the concept of "Failing to find". In every other game, you can play a search card without needing the target in your deck. The idea that only in YGO, if you happen to not know *exactly* how many Warriors are in your deck, and you play ROTA with 0 targets in deck, you can get a penalty is so strange to me.

It's not so bad when playing simplified formats with all the obvious problematic stuff banned, and then from there you just level up one complicated ruling at a time if you want to get into modern yugioh bad enough. The thing about Master Duel is that it's the only official automatic duel simulator, yet it doesn't even have the main official yugioh format included, let alone other side formats that are arguably even better.

As someone who played yugioh as their first real card game, is practically entirely self taught in the game through sheer will, and has attempted to teach friends with pretty wide ranges of card game experience how to play the game, the really truly difficult thing about the game is the fact that cards are constantly doing things that search or summon something that is private knowledge and you cannot know what those other cards will do until after you've seen them so you have to let the first card resolve and if you definitely should've stopped the first card then it's too late, you've already lost the game.

The same is true of the summoning of monsters. You have to wait until your opponent has decided it can resolve before it even hits the field.

If it's an online game - Master Duel, for example - they scoop thinking the game is bugged or they're facing a cheater/hacker that didn't let them activate the monster's GY effect. In the end, they were the one sending the monster to the GY, not you, so they won't trigger any "if this monster is sent to the GY by an opponent's card effect". As an example, literally the entire eldlich archetype does a thing in play, OR you can banish from grave to do another thing. Eldlich himself has an in-hand effect and an in-grave effect. It feels like every card has a part 2 on the end that does a second thing when the card is in a different zone, and you have to juggle them all in your head

I struggled with this so much when I first picked up Witchcrafters. my confusion (and still remains) is how cont spell and field spell effects work in regards to activating their effect or whether theyre "already" on the field, or when to ash as they may have only activated the card but not the effect ot search yet
@nuhrii3449
@nuhrii3449 Жыл бұрын
activating a card is playing the card, activating an effect is the effect of the card, when you play a normal spell, you activate the card and the effect simultaneously, this is where card vs effect clauses are important to note for cont and field spells when using a negate; for example ursarctic radiation, its on play effect is put 7 counters on it, the continuous effect is to draw 1 card at the cost of removing a counter each time you special summon from hand or ed, you can only ash if the you try to remove a counter to draw a card, not when the card is activated and not with its end phase effect. you can also negate continuous cards with a search effect by destroying in a chain, like mst can negate heavy forwards effect to search an infintitrack monster when activated, because it is no longer on the field
@TwistedBOLT
@TwistedBOLT Жыл бұрын
@@nuhrii3449 It's not a continuous effect, it's an activated trigger effect, it's just not a card activation. A continuous effect would draw you a card without starting a chain. Radiation starts a chain both on its card activation and effect activation. Also continuous spell/trap/field spells need to remain on the field to resolve, they aren't negated if you pop them. Negate is a special keyword that only occurs when you use a card that says "negate". Failing to resolve doesn't mean something is negated.

Got into Yu-Gi-Oh with Master Duel. The most confusing thing early on was Synchro and Link summoning. These should not be difficult, but MD's tutorial teaches ritual summoning first. In ritual summoning, you can tribute monsters whose levels exceed the level of the ritual that you're summoning. You cannot do this for Synchros or Links. Took me forever to get into my head that I can't use Apollousa and 1 other monster to make Accesscode.

Synchro Summons are almost like Rituals; Synchro Monsters don't need specific cards to Summon, but the materials' Levels must exactly add up to the Level monster you're trying to Summon and at least 1 of them must be a Tuner monster (although Red Nova Dragon, Red Supernova Dragon and the Mannadium Synchros need multiple Tuners to bring them out).

I could not understand Ruby Carbuncle during the Crystal Beast event deck since it did not seem to trigger. Honestly though, the hard part of YGO is finding the optimal plays, or even ending properly. The cards are fairly intuitive, but you have access to basically every card in your deck in a lot of hands, so it's knowing how to play it out. Plus, knowing what interaction your opponent has, and how to play around/through it to win the game. That's what makes it hard, even to experienced players since a very normal thing to do is to look up a deck guide rather than creating your own combo lines.

I’ve watched a lot of people talk about the Pokémon TCG history and no one ever played base set Charizard. Turns out going through all that trouble to try and get four fire energy in a format where energy removal and super energy removal and various other cards are at 4 copies each makes trying to facilitate a monster that needs four energies with no easy way to attach multiple fire energy per turn and needing to discard every time you attack with no way to recur the energy invested isn’t very good.

Originally, "negate the activation/summoning" was exclusive for spell speed 3, and that was the whole propuse because the idea of the speel speed 3 was that it acts "before" any actions on the chain even aim to happen (like going back in time). This was a rulling that someone from kinami explain me on a e-mail I sent back in 2004. If you see the card texts on the all cards, the counter traps are the only ones that say negate summon/activation, then someone who did not understand this made a mess in the rulling and here are the consequences.

In mtg, with veeeeeeeeery rare exceptions, if you choose a target for a spell, it is well, a target and thjngs that cannot be targeted are safe. @@hirukashiro5995 As both a Magic player and a Yugioh player, Magic is WAY better at allowing you to intuit what exactly your opponent is trying to do and where the breakpoints are. The colour system inherently allows you to know approximately what your opponent is up to as soon as they play their first land. In Magic you don't need to memorize specifically where the chokepoint is in 20 different decks and even if you haven't seen a card before you don't need to read an essay to determine how you should interact with something. It's not about refusing to learn, its about the intuitiveness and readability when it comes to decks and archetypes you've never seen before.
@hirukashiro5995
@hirukashiro5995 Жыл бұрын
@armitroner To be fair you can also use your intuition in YGO as well. Of course the exact optimal choke point for every deck is different, but you can still use your intuition even for new decks. Like when a card read +1 or +2 (pot cards, demise, etc.) you probably need to Ash that most of the time. Or when a card says "special from deck", your YGO intuition immediately tells you that it's probably very strong (most of "special from deck" cards in YGO lead to insane combo) so you also probably need to Ash that. My point is that, you need to study the surrounding meta/background if you want to get better, even in a job, not only in games. There is also intuition taking part in YGO, but there is no other way to be even better w/o learning.

Something I see very often when I play Book of Moon is that people will waste all their targeted negation, like I summon Hanzo, opponent chains Imperm from the hand, I chain Book of Moon, then the opponent chains Effect Veiler. The opponent was technically able to negate Hanzo, but since it will resolve after Book of Moon has resolved, it will be face down and won't remember it was negated. Chain Blocking is rather if I have 2 effects that activate at the same time I can choose the order they go in(example in one of my decks Nephtys, i have Disciple and Sacred Pheonix's floating effects both happening in the standby phase and you cant respond to whatever is Chain 1 because its already being 'responded to' by the Chain 2 effect(say I CL 1 Disciple CL2 Phoenix, you wouldn't be able to use Ash on Disciple's effect)

NOW YOU CAN ACTIVATE SAID SNOW WHILE THE OTHER 5 CHAIN LINKS ARE WAITING TO RESOLVE. That's what The Stack would be.

The absolute #1 biggest problem with Yu-Gi-Oh the fact that there is no codified absolute comprehensive set of rules that handle any possible situation. Magic the Gathering has such a rulebook, where it handles literally every single situation that could ever happen in any game, and anyone can easily just pull up a section on what happens; meanwhile in Yu-Gi-Oh, people have to pull up some obscure ruling by some 16 person locals judge 12 years ago in some backwater town to determine if player A could activate card effect X when player B does Y action. Floodgate effects simultaneously looking at the board state both before an attempted summon _and_ after and disallowing it if _either_ meets the floodgate is also really unintuitive and bad. If Rivalry of Warlords is face-up, it _shouldn't_ stop a player from normal summoning a Purrely and linking it off into Linkuriboh for example. "Missing the timing" is objectively a bad thing and should be entirely removed from the game. Just say all "When" effects now work exactly the same as "If" effects. Simple as. Monster cards having to "remember they were properly summoned", and the fact they "forget" if they move from one non-field zone to another non-field zone, is also bad and should be removed. Cards or effects being unable to be activated if you can't fully fulfil all the resolution effects is also dumb, especially when it's a search effect and you no longer have any copies of any searchable card in deck, then it just becomes "you can't even activate that card because you don't have any targets, even though it's looking in a hidden information zone and _neither_ player knows if there are any left for this to be a legal action". Chains being set in stone and having to fully resolve before anyone can do anything new is very annoying to learn for anyone coming from MtG (where the stack is dynamic and can be responded to and added on to at any point in its resolution). It also doesn't help that there's situations like card effects triggering from events in a chain, but because chains are set in stone the newly triggered effects have to go on a new chain immediately after instead.

I have a relationship with yugioh through scraps of anime, the movie on VHS, and games against my dad when I was 5. When I got back into yugioh because Master Duel came out, I was pretty excited. I was older. I had learned a fighting game. I felt like I could really sit down and learn whatever I put in front of me. I pulled some packs and IMMEDIATELY fell in love with a deck: Dark World. COST vs EFFECT WAS THE SINGLE MOST FRUSTRATING THING IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE. I literally just had to google card databases and rulings and what cards actually fucking work in a Dark World strategy. Turns out, pretty much JUST Dark World cards and that one card that’s literally more broken than Pot of Greed… I just want Dark World Graceful Charity. You can give it a shit drawback. You can make it as archetype locked as you possibly can, just PLEASE BRO. Danger! Graceful Trap for Dark World? It would be cool… please don’t let my deck die… It broke my heart learning that my deck is ass simply because it’s the cool things I like: graveyard-based, dark attribute, fiend deck. When I found Dangers it made me really happy, but then I learned Dark World plays well under Skill Drain, and I immediately stopped optimizing it. It started to feel weird to need Dangers to really play my favorite boys. Then the support got announced, and I was free from the clutches of folklore. Playing pure Dark World and being able to brew with some more shitty fiend pile type Dark World decks has been fun. Part of me does wish I could brew something that wasn’t hot ass, but there’s a reason that I’m not Jesse Cotton. I’m not even TSX1. I feel like I could be better, but I don’t really want to be. I love playing games as a skilled shitter. I love messing around. My dream deck is probably like Dark World Necrofear w/ a dash of nurse burn. That or Skull Servant or Gren Maju. I love beefin up a boy: I’d play equip spells if that didn’t mean playing specifically Infernoble. I don’t even like warriors that much tbh, but specifically Infernoble just… eh, for me. Guess I’ve always liked the monsters or at least like… magic people… like Mr. Volcano or Dark Magician. Anyways, one long-ass comment later… yeah, cost vs effect is dumb and I don’t like it, also maybe more Dark World support. I’d personally love another fusion to go into or some… grace.

Speed 1 : Monster Effects, Spell Effects Speed 2 : Traps, Quick Effects (monster or quick-play) Speed 3 : Counter Traps Today all of the above could easily be described as something like; "Only Quick effects (reworded to be a general thing for quick-effects on monsters, quick-play spells, and all traps) can be activated in response to another action/activation/whatever. Activating Shadow Spell in the Damage Step is always fun (we mostly duel with videogames but sometimes use our crappy real cards). "What do you mean my monster's attack continues? Shadow Spell clearly says my monster can't attack and it really says attack, not declare an attack!". Anyway, there are also cases where the rulebook makes things unnecessarily complicated. All that Spell Speed stuff? Throw it in your brain's recycle bin! Spell Speed 1 can never chain in the first place by their very nature (good luck chaining Pot of Greed to Raigeki despite both being Spell Speed 1), and Spell Speed 3 is only Counter Traps and nothing else. So the entire ruling can be condensed to "only Counter Traps can chain to Counter Traps" (exceptions like The Fabled Unicore are not handled by the Spell Speed ruling either, so you really lose out on nothing. Oh, and that example is immediately another example of what makes the game complicated).

I wish they would create a new trap category called something like “restrict” which is a category for traps that acts like flood gates and each player can only have one active face up.

it would need some extra design stuff with putting a worse resriction on you and a mentinence cost.

The damage step intricacies always trip people up. I remember when Bujins first came out and literally everyone in most tournaments thought I was cheating with Bujingi Crane. Also, you can use any counter trap during the damage step, but the only regular spell/trap you can use during the damage step is if it specifically modifies atk/def. But then there's weird exceptions like Reverse Trap, which says to reverse all atk/def modifications during the turn. That *can't* be played during the damage step, even though it modifies atk/def, because apparently it's just casting an.... "enchantment" over the battlefield that causes atk/def to reverse, but isn't doing so directly...

i remember struggling to remember so many different effects, "Psy-frame lord omega" was the 1st card i was like "wait, he has another effect?" when does he come back? when does it return a banished card? and he can return a card and itself from the grave? why does he have so many effects?!

What confused me the most were monster cards that had 'when' and 'if' sent to grave effects. I remember not being able to use dupe frog to search after tributing over it and when shaddolls came out, I thought they couldn't either after fusing.

I can't wait until Yu-Gi-Oh is out of beta and they get rid of dumb bugs like "missed timing" for the full release.

I was hugely tripped up by a combination of these a while back. I wasn't able to send a pendulum monster on my field to the graveyard for cost, as pendulums don't go to the graveyard from the field, but under macro cosmos they still get banished instead of being sent to the graveyard or extra deck? The answer is "costs must be paid in full" and "MC and pendulums do the same thing but MC takes priority over base rules"
