What Middle-Class High School Kids Were Like In The 1950s

This is a portion of a television program made in the 1950s and presented on what was called educational television. It was part of a series designed to look at 1950s teenagers and what their lives were like. They will largely study the new rising middle class teenagers who at the time, appeared to be living by all of the "rules" that existed in the 1950s for them and how they would become or should become successful adults. I wonder what happened to all of these people as they live through the 1960s and had children by the end of that decade. Everything seems to many viewers who have commented on it, how "clean and upright" these students are. Of course they were carefully selected (remember there were rebels at that time including boys who wore leather jackets and girls for tight fitting skirts etc.) to be examples not only of what teenagers were like but examples of what they should be like.
To get some of the facts on the 1950s watch this - • He Gives The Most Well... .

@@Wilantonjakov No that's not true at all, some people use 'like' as kind of a filler word or they do it out of habit. I use it all the time, even though I do have quite an extensive vocabulary lol.

Exactly. You use it as a filler word because you're either lazy or can't be bothered using a wider vocabulary - which again is inherently laziness. That's exactly the point I was making. As always, there are exceptions, but exceptions don't always change the rule.

Just as an educational TV show today (or a school board, or .. MY old school board) would likely pick the students that have the best grades and behave the way they like. To be honest, as much that seems different, there’s so much that’s the same.

The fact you said "dissing" in 2019 says enough. I'm 31 and a millennial, and yet even when I was in high school that was something our parents said lol. Watch news interviews with kids today. They'll always try to sound more mature than how they'd normally speak. Back then the stations would also pick the best and the brightest. Take off the nostalgia goggles for at least a moment.

All these comments saying "that generation of teens are better than today" are not taking into account that they were on TV right when it came out. Of course they are acting mature, people rarely got the chance to be on TV so when they did, they dressed the best, acted the best, talked the best, all because only those kind of people were on TV. Now, everyone has the chance so it's not special enough to change how you act in front of a camera.

I was born in 1959. As a child in the 60's I can definately tell you kids were more polite. We did not speak to adults the way kids do today. Cursing was not allowed. We believed in sitting at the table for dinner. Our pass time was playing chase, hop scotch, barbies, riding bikes, etc. We understood what it meant to be home at a certain time. We didn't have reminders such as phones and such so we learned to follow rules. The world has changed and we have lost a beautiful time in history.

Every fucking generation, the old complain about the young. Every generation thinks theirs was the last one that was ‘decent’. In the twenties the old Victorian folks thought that jazz and the Charleston were immoral, that young people were ‘fast’ and alcohol was too prolific. In the fifties, the older generation complained about the young people liking Elvis and rock and roll. In the 90’s my grandparents thought us kids were too glued to the tv, that South Park would poison our minds and Eminem would make us into miniature gangsters. Well, me and my brother are in our thirties now, and we’re normal functioning adults. All my friends from school are leading ordinary, conformist lives, according to Facebook. The fears of the elderly unfounded again. When will people learn that, actually, the kids are all right? Leave the younger generation alone. Every decade has its ups and downs, there is no time that was perfect. Don’t let nostalgia goggles turn you into a miserable curmudgeon. All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall.

One thing I’ve noticed people who behave and talk a certain way in early adulthood keep that core persona for the rest of their lives like highschool students in the video act like eighty year olds do today and they haven’t changed much with time in terms of personality. Now keep that in mind ninety years down the line we’ll have old people taking duck face selfies while attempting poorly to dab and floss.

It's fascinating that they seem so similar to youth today, it's just that they grew up in a different time and different environment. I myself have a hard time imagining old people as once having been young, it's just really interesting to see that everyone at one point was the new generation.

Coming from a black man i wish more of the black youth today take some inspiration in this young black teen in the video. Dressed smartly and well spoken for a teen his age, its a shame that most young black teens instead like to dress ghetto like and roam around speaking slang and act hard when in reality it leads them nowhere but crime. I hope that someday those that choose that path grow up to realise their choice and instead focus on education and progression as a society to help better the world instead of ruining it. One day

Some of the more superficial traits of these kids are to be admired and I think promoted in today's society, but they barely conceal an unhealthy repression. The 50's were all about conformity, to an excess.

Roger Levy You couldn't be more right, hence why these kids soon created their own "counter culture" in the 60s. These teens shown in this video probably became hippies by the next 5-10 years lmao, rejecting their parents, smoking weed, trying LSD, sleeping around, learning open mindedness and tolerance, etc. This sort of culture sort caused the sudden and extreme rebellion that has shaped even today's modern culture. That's what happens when society goes to one extreme. People who say that they miss the 1950s or say that people back then were better are actually morons. Ungrateful brats smh..
