Pigs actually could eat it, so instead of just throwing it away she could make a bag a month and donate it to a local pig farm or something like that. Also the rice amd the oil can be used even tho they were open, and those carrots could be added to a soup with other vegetables. Idk, there is so much food waste in the world, we should all do our part in stoping it whoever we can

She doesn't give them away to those in need because most places if not all don't accept opened items because many horrible people have messed with the food. This is the same for homeless people. For livestock, it's the same problem because if something is wrong with the food, it can seriously damage the animals. She also made a video on this but I don't know how long ago. She did state that if she didn't want to eat it because of safety risks she wouldn't want to risk someone else's life.

@EmmaJeanTyrrell As someone who runs a food pantry, I appreciate that you decide not to donate opened food. A rule of thumb is, if you don't want to eat it then neither will others. Assuming those experiencing food insecurity will settle for opened/old food is a big lapse in judgement and reveals some subconscious feelings about how we feel about low income populations. The saying that beggers can't be choosers is wrong - everyone deserves the dignity of receiving unopened food

why throw away the rice when you have to wash it anyway?
@Jazzy-yp5dl
@Jazzy-yp5dl 16 күн бұрын
Sadly because it's just unsafe. There's many things people could and can do to food that is open and not everyone washes their rice either. I know in places like the UK, it's VERY common to just throw the rice into the boiling water and then "wash" the cooked rice after.

I feel like some kind of compost situation could be nice for all of the food waste from guests. There are companies in major cities who give you a bin, you fill it up and then they come pick it up and give you a fresh bucket so you don’t have to worry about what you do with the compost!
@KaleyRuff-sh2gs
@KaleyRuff-sh2gs 13 күн бұрын
My only thing is, if they did do something bad to it, wouldn't that affect how it composts? Also, very few cities offer you a bin like that: Portland, Eugene, New York, Seattle, San Francisco, and many other California towns. But many different places don't want it or charge an expensive fee. If you are missing the mark for a large majority of the population like the Midwest and South(Texas is number 2 for most population followed by Florida, and then Illinois in 4th, Ohio 5th, Georgia 6th, North Carolin7th, Michigan 8th), not saying composting is terrible. Still, it must be more common and affordable before it can become something every major city has.

Really goes to show just how wasteful some businesses are, unfortunately. Im sitting here trying to figure out if i have enough money to to buy food for the next few days and i come across this video, of a woman throwing away food. If you really feel uncomfortable donating the food left behind to those in need for the gear of it being tampered with, then that just goes to show the quality of guests you allow in your home. And you should probably stop allowing them in your home for a quick buck.

The guests brought that food with them and they should've kept the food with them instead of leaving it behind! I don't know what's going on in the lives of the people who stay here, but I don't think it would be a huge struggle for most of them to be more careful about food waste.

Because it’s gross and the food could be contaminated. It’s a health and safety risk, plus most charity centers don’t ever take opened foods.

She can't do that and know 100% that it would be safe for them to eat. Homelessness doesn't mean a person deserves scraps or garbage. It would be better to purchase and donate unopened items.

maybe you should start composting or give it to someone in need rather than just throwing it out
@TheTypewriterError

That's my thought too. There are some very nice countertop-appropriate composters that make it really easy to turn uneaten food into dirt or at least break the food down so it will compost faster once it's spread outside.

it could be a liability if the next guest gets sick, finds mold etc. besides there's no real way of knowing if the previous guest would have touched it or put something in it. So its better to be safe.

Please get smaller sizes of the items you provide. Or donate the remaining items, please don’t waste food items like this. Also if you get bigger size / quantities that expire soon, you can’t donate them, so smaller size is better.
