Hi, I have a 10 month old with 2 tiny teeth and I'm so afraid of giving him food to eat himself. I've been feeding him homemade pureed food like spinach, carrots etc.... so I would cook up carrot and spinach with rice and blend it roughly. Or what I have for supper I would blend roughly for him too. Can you give me some advice on feeding him something that's not pureed or blended and how to know what's the right size to avoid choking. I've tried it and everytime he bites off a chunk of bread I jump up and take it out of his mouth... frantically

My baby hates puréed food so I started off with things that I know dissolve quickly. His first food that he really liked was Cheetos puffs. They kind of test out how far they can put something in their mouths. He would like gag himself a little to test it out but mostly he just munched down even without teeth. Their gag reflexes are much stronger than ours. He was eating Cheetos, cookies, grapes cut in half, strawberry’s (fruit is also fun and good for teething if it’s frozen), all before he had any teeth at all. If something got too small I would just exchange it for a new one. The freeze dried frozen yogurt melts are also amazing. My little guy loves them. I just put a few of those, random little cereals and the little star puff things in the baby section, on the coffee table. He really likes to be independent. Finger foods are a great start for them. His pediatrician recommended skipping purées bc it can cause problems with knowing how to eat solids. My little one is 10 months old now and has two tiny teeth as well. Tonight he had Mac and cheese, French style green beans, corn, chicken nuggets and mashed potatoes. You don’t have to be super fancy, just give him little spoonfuls of different things on his high chair to try for himself. You’d be surprised what they can eat. He just bites off of things now that he has his two teeth. He is so independent and strong willed that he didn’t like being spoon fed. Just put a bib on him and be patient and introduce him to some safe easy to eat finger foods. :) You’re a great mom for caring so much. Good luck. 👍🏼

Bread won’t hurt him btw. My babe eats biscuits, and bread kind of melts down a little in your mouth. It’s soft. They’ll spit out anything they can’t swallow usually.

Hey just be patient and just keep introducing things. :) My little guy didn’t seem interested for the longest time but I would hand him a Cheeto puff or a piece of fruit. He’s ten months old and he’s just now started eating a little better. And sometimes he just doesn’t feel like it. Remember that textures are new and it’s a brand new and different thing than breast milk and formula. Anything before 12 months is just an introduction to food, so it’s okay if they only take a little taste or make funny faces or spit it out. Just smile and be patient, and if they throw it down or push the spoon away just let it go and try again later. And reintroducing things that they push away, is good. They recommend trying a food several times before deciding they really don’t like it. Oh, and the yogurt melts are amazing for a first snack. My baby LOVES them. Sorry for rambling. Good luck. #teammama

@curvymary134 жыл бұрын
Coughing, gagging & spitting up are all normal. Choking is not. Choking is where they can't breathe, can't cough, stop making noise or turn blue. If they are coughing or gagging let them work it out. If you start patting them on the back you can actually cause them to choke. My daughter gags all the time & spits out whatever she has & then grabs more food. It doesn't affect her at all. As long as momma is calm. That's the hardest thing for moms I think, to not do anything and stay calm. Good luck!

Babies gums are actually a lot stronger then we think. Jas Roper My baby hates puréed food so I started off with things that I know dissolve quickly. His first food that he really liked was Cheetos puffs. They kind of test out how far they can put something in their mouths. He would like gag himself a little to test how far they can put something in their mouth, so try to breathe. He was eating Cheetos, cookies, grapes cut in half, strawberry’s (fruit is also fun and good for teething if it’s frozen), all before he had any teeth at all. He wasn’t super interested at first so instead of wasting a whole container of baby food I would just give him something off my plate like a green bean or a biscuit and once he tasted something a few times he would be more interested. Food is a brand new experience to them so don’t write a certain food off if they don’t seem interested at first. Just use your best judgement. The pediatrician said that you don’t have to feed them plain food without seasoning. He said it was better to just give them what you eat bc that’s what he’ll be eating while he’s growing up with you. :) He was gumming his food down really well even without any teeth. It surprised me so much. Lol.

@kavanaghdiaries24942 жыл бұрын
I wasn’t nervous as I am CPR and first aid certified and did a lot of research on baby lead weaning before I started. As long as I could easily squish the food in between my finger and thumb I knew he could chew it!!! Babies gums are actually a lot stronger then most people think. Your daughter will probably gag a-lot which is completely normal. They are learning how to manipulate food around in their mouths. Their gag reflexes are a lot further up then an adults so it’s easier for them to gag it’s all new to them and a learning process. If she starts to cough then you know she isn’t choking and coughing is a sign that air is getting in. Do a lot of research about what sizes the food should be cut into for her age and what foods to start with!! I wish you the best of luck:)

It’s ok for them to choke a little. I know that sounds bad 🤣🤦🏾♀️ but they have to learn how to cough stuff out of their throat when they take too big of a bite or whatever. We didn’t just know how to do that. It’s a thing you learn as you get more exposure to different foods. You really just know what your baby can do. You watch them learn and grow and eat and you know what their skill level is at at all times for different things.
@jaytoussaint95984 жыл бұрын
Start off with things that dissolve easily. That’ll calm your nerves a little. They mash it with their gums. You’d be surprised what they can eat before they have any teeth at all. Cheeto puffs, freeze dried yogurt bites, the star shaped fruit puff things, cookies, a biscuit, slightly overcooked veggies (I buy the smaller cans of green beans and veggies that I can just put in front of him), canned mandarin oranges, grapes cut in half, strawberries, (fruit is also yummy frozen and feels good on their gums. I admit it’s super scary at first. Once something would get too small I would take it from him and trade it with a new one. But they’re smart little human beings. They test their gag reflex and are usually pretty careful. They may gag but their gag reflexes are much stronger than our bc nature built us this way to protect us. His pediatrician told me to skip purées altogether bc it can delay them on being able to eat solid foods. Good luck, and breathe sister. :)

@kavanaghdiaries24943 жыл бұрын
he has never choked on his food!! He is now almost 2.5 and I also have an almost one year old who would gag a lot as well. Gagging if very common and completely normal. It’s new to them and they are learning how to manipulate food in their mouths. As long as baby led weaning is done correctly like cutting food into long skinny stripes and it’s soft enough for you to squish between your thumb and index finger then you shouldn’t have any issues. Babies gag reflexes are a lot further up then ours so they will gag a lot rather the choke but still keep a close eye on baby while they are eating incase they do start to choke and you need to assist. If they cough they are not choking as coughing means they are getting air!! I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck:)

@sk8ergurl42063 жыл бұрын
No, breast milk is all a baby needs up to 1 year. Food is just to get babies used to it.

Is the table food diet for breastfed babies different from formula fed? My baby is ready for table food I feel, but his doctor said to wait. And I’m scared he won’t chew everything because his teeth hasn’t come in yet 😭

How does he not put too much in his mouth and choke? I have an almost 7 month old and I’m so scared she will put too much at a time
@kavanaghdiaries24943 жыл бұрын
He’s always been a really good eater and only puts in a little at a time. I always sit with him just in case he puts to much in. If he does he can spit out the food that’s too much. Every child is different, for example this is an old video and he is almost 2 and I have a 6 month old currently and I wouldn’t feed him like this he just isn’t ready. You have to do what’s best for you and your child:)

Blueberry waffle...what is that made of? Isn't it just sugar. I think breastmilk has the most nutrients.
@kavanaghdiaries24943 жыл бұрын
He still gets a lot of breastmilk!!! And he doesn’t always get waffles if you watched the video you would know that!!!

I don’t understand why my doctor told me not to give my baby water But here the baby is seven months and drinks water she told me only after she is 12 months and he’s eating regular foods my baby is still eating apple sauce and Baby food stage two she is seven months plz give me advice.
@kavanaghdiaries24943 жыл бұрын
You should follow what your doctor recommends as every baby is different. We got the go ahead to give water at 6 months in small amounts. We started him off with purées at 4 months and around 6 months we made the transition to whole foods.

My baby just turned 7 months old and is on purred food. He acts like he hates it. Some things he likes. I use Yumi food. He had water throughout the day and breast milk. I still feel like he isnt eating enough. How do you do this ? When i tell his doctor I want to just give him food like this she looks at me crazy and tells me to stick the purred food .
@kavanaghdiaries24943 жыл бұрын
We started him on purred food at 4 months. Around I think 6 months he was over it he kept chewing the purées and was more interested in what we were eating. It’s not for everyone if your more comfortable with purées then do that:) I have a video on my channel talking about how I switched him from purées to solids. If you are interested in knowing how we started to switch that’s a good one to watch.
