One more thing: I've seen vegan parents say that they lie to their doctors about what their children are eating. Please don't do this. If your doc is unnecessarily critical (like in a "kids need meat to be healthy" anti-vegan sort of way), report them and find a new doctor. That said, expect your pediatrician to be wary and to ask a lot of questions. It's likely they have very little experience with this and are worried. That's okay. Ours was a little apprehensive at first, until we explained what we were feeding, what supplements we give, etc. Basically, we made it clear that we know what we're doing, that we know all of the nutrients we need to pay special attention. Since then, he's been super supportive (he actually just moved to a clinic far away from us, but we take transit there because he's so awesome). The fact that we aren't anti-vax, that we listen to suggestions, and that baby's growth and development has been normal probably helps to. :)

Fortified soy milk is appropriate once they reach a year old, not for a 9-month-old. "After 12 months, vegan infants may be weaned with soy milk fortified with calcium and vitamins B12 and D. If a vegan baby is weaned from breast milk before 12 months, they should receive vegan infant formula until they are 1 year old. Milk alternatives, such as soy, rice, almond, hemp, etc., are not recommended during the first year of life as a primary drink because they do not have the right amounts of nutrients." www.eatright.org/resource/food/nutrition/vegetarian-and-special-diets/feeding-vegetarian-and-vegan-infants-and-toddlers

I wish my mother had been that careful about my diet when I was a toddler and child, because I couldn't eat animal products (I started to vomit uncontrollably when I tried). So I was basically raised on potatoes, pasta, veg and salads - just the sides without the animal products, but I know now it was a pretty miserably deficient diet. I'm healthy, though, always have been, so the human body must be pretty adaptable. I just wish I'd had...well, a better diet as a kid. You're a good mother. :)

You don't know how much reading makes me feel better. Aside from nursing, my 1.5 yo basically lives on peanut butter, graham crackers, and fruit. It's maddening sometimes. If you let the baby decide what its going to eat when its young it becomes picky as a child. Breast milk is infinitely more nutritious for babies than formula if you are pumping the milk there isn't really a problem with them drinking it until they decide they're to old for that. So long as you're willing to deal with all that.

I learned broccoli stems were edible 2 years ago now we don't waste all our broccoli! Super stoked! Eggs are unhealthy if they are factory farmed non free range because of the Omegas being unbalenced and the hormones they pump into them. Chickens need to eat bugs, small grains and veggies to be healthy if they aren't healthy the eggs won't be either.

I don't understand, you mention that kids eat too many processed foods....but you also feed your baby mostly processed foods(not homemade, from a box or container, convenience).All but the avacoado and banana. If you were to make your own fruit mash stuffs, "milks" and even yogurts...this would be much more nutritious. Also, have you tried homemade coconut milk for the constipation? It's super easy to make, shredded coconut, water, blend, strain.
@christina74544 жыл бұрын
Homemade milks are not an adequate substitute because they're not fortified. So if you make your own milks make sure to supplement calcium, B12, iodine, vitamin D, B2+6 and vitamin A+E are usually in plant milks too.

My LO is really slow on solids as well. It took him until 9 months to actually want to eat food we gave him and be somewhat interested in what we are eating. He's still super picky and he's eating solids gradually. Sadly he doesn't eat as good sometimes because the only solids he will eat are breads (whole wheats and grains though). This makes me feel so much better that there is hope he will be more interested and less picky. I have been exclusively pumping but still have to supplement due to low production (despite pumping every 3 hours 20-30min) and how much this guy eats. Thank you for the video you are always incredibly helpful!

I have a great oat milk I would like to share. 1/3 of a cup raw organic oatmeal, blend in blender till fine, add 2 cups filtered water and 1 to 2 dates and blend well. This is great as a milk to drink or to put on oatmeals, 100 % whole wheat semolina hot cereal ect. Baby would love a mixture of steamed carrots, butternut squash and sweet potatoe puree with oat milk drizzle. You can double, tripple recipe. You can stain the oat milk but the fibre is benificial. The oat milk can be used to thicken veggie soups ect. but not used in baking. Just thought I would share another alternative to soy. The only fruit I would make a compote from would be pears and then blend as its easier on babies tummies. I used to make all homemade food as for some weird reason my children did not like the stuff in jars. The strawberries were disgusting and so were the carrots and everything else that came in those jars. They loved peas my goodness. These are great times for you and baby for sure. The best times😃

Yeah, there's a bit of a range for child development milestones. My step-mother was a social worker who had a specialty in child development (did a lot of classes for WIC mothers, etc...), and regularly assured parents that some kids pick up on things at the later end of the spectrum, some pick up earlier, and unless Baby is falling very far outside that range of normal, don't worry about it too much, just keep following up with the pediatrician, and be upfront about what they're eating and how much play-learning they're doing every day.

If your baby gets constipated when you don’t give her a prune juice/soy milk mixture (ew), you aren’t feeding her properly. Constipation is not normal and you shouldn’t have to constantly use supplements to help a baby pass stools. As someone who is extremely critical of others’ diets, you should be concerned for your own kid.

You always seemed like a smart vegan woman to me till now, because of how you critique other vegans.. i don't believe vegan is healthy, not if it means supplementing. That right there tells you need to eat what was meant for your body to eat..this isn't healthy and balanced for a toddler. I see so many things you could have added into this diet for them. Toddlers don't need 3 set meals. They just need to eat balanced and enough throughout the day.. at least you didn't lie.

If you eat a diet filled with whole plant foods, you may come pretty close to meeting your needs. However, if your intake is lower than 2000 calories per day for women, or 3000 calories per day for men, you may fall short of choline. So, you may want to supplement your diet a few times per week with choline. However, keep in mind that new research has linked high choline intake and blood levels with increased mortality. That’s because high choline intake has been linked with increased production of TMAO, which has been associated with significantly higher risk of heart attacks and strokes compared with lower levels. So, it may not be a good idea to over supplement with choline. As with all dietary supplements, you should discuss them with your health care professional before taking them. It may be beneficial to take small doses of choline (about 250 mg) a few times per week to balance out low intake, but it’s not a case of more is better!

Your baby sounds so cute! I love how you light up when lil smoosh walked in! So cute. My sister had her own lil smoosh 9 months ago, and she’s planning on giving him a vegan diet too. ✊🏻🌱

Mad respect to you for keeping baby’s privacy! I’ve been very off put by youtubers turning into family vlogging channels or randomly adding clips of babies when it doesn’t relate to the video. Maybe it’s because at the library recently I saw a middle aged man watching a video of girls on a trampoline and got creeped out (I know it could have been family but I guess I have preconceived judgements) I can’t believe you found avocados so cheap! Maybe you could make up a fake name for baby for when they’re a toddler? Baby is still cute though.

Great video! I have a small question: do you fill all the info of your baby's food in a food tracker app? Like Chronometer or such? You mentioned small additives here and there like soy lecithin for micronutrients, but without an app seems like mission impossible to keep checking that all is under control. Thanks!

Camameal tea helps with constipation, a lot of Mexican mothers mix it in the milk and helps a lot, yerba buena in Spanish, maybe look into it and see if you’d want to consider using the remedy

I seriously used to be worried about my toddler not eating enough. Once I just kind of relaxed about it he started to eat more. He’s 2.5 now and just wants to eat whatever I’m eating, specifically from my plate. Haha. But there are days he just will eat so little I start to worry, and the next he will eat a ton.

Add in more natural plant fat eliminate processed sugar. That will do the trick with constipation. Mom of 2 & 4 year old who have never had constipation. If you stick with unsweatened soy they wont know the difference. I use vanilla flavor to give it a taste and add a but of cinnamon at times. Of course fruit sugar is okay.. constipation hurts.

Why do you think canola oil is healthy? No! It’s a vegetable oil. No, give olive oil or avocado oil or coconut oil. No vegetable oils.

Jessica Wilson wasnt there a recent study about coconut oil actually being unhealthy? Or at least not as healthy as we used to think?
@jennoscura23816 жыл бұрын
As long as the oil is unsaturated and not in excessive quantities, oil is fine. Any registered dietician worth their salt would agree. On twitter Ginny Messina RD said that switching from saturated fats to unsaturated oils will reduce cholesterol levels. Only crazy vegan doctors like McDougall and Esselstyn will tell you to stay away from oil.

You criticize Ellen Fisher , yet you feed your child all these gerber processed foods. Im so annoyed... 🙄
@adrianek57196 жыл бұрын
I agree. Everyone knows that if you eat processed food your tummy explodes.
@Olivia-tf4kg6 жыл бұрын
Most of the reason Unnatural Vegan criticized Ellen was because of the fact that she doesn't supplement for b12 and promotes the anti-vax narrative, not because she feeds her kid processed food.
@VenusVideos_6 жыл бұрын
Olivia Ive rewatched both videos and you know what youre right. It wasnt that bad , except I dont believe we should shame anti-vaxxers. They do research, they ask for inserts, they take a different kind of risk... & there ARE a loooot of vaccine injured kids so I understand both perceptions.
@Olivia-tf4kg6 жыл бұрын
@@VenusVideos_ I appreciate your openness and, I think it's admirable to admit that you were wrong about something. However, I would argue that not all risks are equal. The risk for a vaccine injured kid is far less than the risk of getting a disease that could have been vaccinated.

could have been prevented through vaccines*

have you thought about probiotics for baby? what are your thoughts on that? My baby is a young toddler and very prone to that issue too so I started baby probiotics about 2 months ago and haven't had issues since (both with consistency and frequency). It can make things a lot easier on them. Good job for keeping baby so private! :) I am struggling sometimes coming with ideas for vegan food for baby.

Some wonderful tips in this video and meal ideas, I personally think that you will far exceed the average RDA of essential vitamins, minerals and fatty acids compared to most non-vegans, who are deficient in regards to B12 in particular. I would like to see more meal options, my child can be fussy about most foods, but loves his veggies and pasta sauces.

Was wondering if you could make a video with all the supplements/fortified foods you take and possibly what your average macronutrient ratio is because I'm just a bit confused since I just discovered your channel and started to listen to what you have to say?
