At 50+, 2 marathons a year is enough wear and tear on the body. Throwing (2 marathons in 1!!!!) Comrades in there is a bad idea. You'd just be spreading yourself too thin. Figure out your #1 problem before the London block, and focus on it. And see what happens. Recover post London, reassess and attack the next weakness if you haven't fixed the first one. Maybe it's better intensity distribution so you can build up to 7days a week running. Maybe it's more top end speed. It sounds like you need a coach to really provide you a 2nd pair of eyes to objectively see what you need to change, and not just another coach with a system they try to force down your throat. Maybe it's switching to power based running, and HR for easy stuff. Maybe get testing done to get a clear LT1/LT2, so you potentially spend WAY less time in the dreaded grey zone. There are so many different ways to improve your running...the hard part is figuring out which gives you specifically the best bang for your limited number of high end running years before time starts to reign you in.
@global-runner2 ай бұрын
Identifying the weakness is key. I think it was lack of miles this time. I didn’t really get a big mileage block done. Maybe I have an autumn of speed followed by a winter of miles and then come out the other end firing for the marathon block? Thoughts?
@timtrenholm36982 ай бұрын
@@global-runner A speed block on reduced mileage and more recovery into a heavy mileage block, where you do just enough to keep the speed might work well. Also, doing your marathon specific training at HM effort is my new training style. It makes workouts rough, but ideally race day is frustrating until 32k when I actually start to push.

I'm 56 years old and I got back in shape doing a lot of different sports. But being heavy, my obsession with running will only be about doing a good 10k time. I don't need to do more, if I can run 10k in quite a decent time, I will be satisfied. It's all about morphology, to be a long distance runner, one has to be slim and light; it would be completely unrealistic for me (who weights 210 pounds) to contemplate performing at a marathon distance, so I don't even think about it. On the other hand, my upper body's weight and strenght, wich is a flaw when considering long distance running, serves me well in other sports (like crosscountry skiing, swimming, boxing and weight lifting). Anyway, I just want to stay in shape as long as possible, and I'm not afraid of working hard, but one has to find the right plan, the right balance for himself. Running a marathon is definitely not on my list.

Just an outsider looking in, it feels like your top end speed is your limiting factor for the sub 2.30. Have you considered really trying to hammer down your 5k and 10km times and then build a marathon block on top of that. Appreciate speed work carry’s with it extra injury risk. all the tapering and recovery for a marathon can sometimes end up hampering progress. Just my thoughts anyway mate :) I don’t know whether there places left but have you also considered Seville in February. Crazy amount of people all hitting times around 2.30, might help pull you along! London sounds hectic these days unless you have an elite start
@global-runner2 ай бұрын
Thanks for looking in! I appreciate the comment a lot! I do wonder if I should focus on speed or mileage next. My inclination was to do more miles because I come from a track background and I feel like I have basic speed but your comment really got me thinking. I put in my latest 5k time (16:22) and it gave me a 2:28 predicted marathon time. So I’m not sure if speed is the issue or if I just need to get fitter. Maybe both!! :) Appreciate any other thoughts you have. I love external views on this type of stuff

@@global-runner that’s why I love running there’s always more than one way to skin a cat and you’ve got to figure out what stimulus works for you…until it changes 😂 Sorry mate I didn’t really 16.20’s would bring you in at sub 2.30. I’m doing 5k in 15:40 and the thought of holding sub2.30 pace scares the hell out of me 😂 one thing for sure the faster you are the easier that pace is going to feel as long as it’s backed up with volume. It seems that’s how a lot of elites are structuring their builds these days although undoubtedly volume is key. I’d just be wary of doing too many marathons and it being too disruptive. That being said I’m just coming out of a long New Zealand winter and I know how hard it is without the dangle of a race goal in sight. And the winters here are super tame in comparison to where you are!
@global-runner2 ай бұрын
What you say is 100% correct. But it’s funny how some people can hold faster paces for longer. My friend has a 73 min half marathon PB and a 2:27 marathon PB. He started with ultras so finds fast paces difficult but can hold his top pace forever.

Question for you… Are you on Strava? If not, you should consider it. You could follow the top marathon runners in our age group and make some comparisons. This might give you a clue on what to work on. It’s also fun to follow and encourage each other out. Just FYI, the russian guy has a total mileage of 5,787k this year and another top mararathon runner in our age group, Ken Rideout, has a total of 5,113. I have been following you for a while through your KZbin channel and if I would have to guess, I would say that the top two things preventing you from achieving your 2:30 goal would be your total yearly mileage (too low to achieve the 2h30 goal) and the fact that you’re doing too many marathons per year. The tapers associated with each and the weeks following are preventing you from achieving high yearly mileage. I might be wrong here Duncan but just sharing my perspective to help you out. I also understand that you want to do another marathon this year so consider maybe my advice for 2025 😊

I am on Strava under Global Runner. I don’t put every run on there but I do put the key ones. You’re 100% right on the mileage. I think I’ll end up with about 3000 km this year which is almost half those other guys. That is definitely something I need to rectify…

In my opinion; prepare sub 2:30 for London focusing your training in two things; running form and change your training plan, you spent to much time doing cross training because you have to much long runs into weeks, try introduce shorter runs daily and add more lactate threshold workouts; you have a huge aerobic base but your threshold zone probably is to short and doing more LT workouts is the key to maintain that effort to break 2:30.

Chasing a time is a bad idea. As others have suggested, much better to do a speed block or have some focus other than a marathon for a while so you can come into the next block raring to go

I think if I did a marathon in December, I’d look for 2:35 as a goal. Just to take the top off the pressure and get closer to the ultimate goal. But equally, an autumn of speed followed by a winter of miles would also be a good approach…

Already lots of great comments given ☝️. I would also consider not running a marathon in December as an option, but focus on a series of 10Ks and, later om a HM instead, to increase running speed, strength and mental toughness.
@global-runner2 ай бұрын
Mental toughness is a great comment. I do sometimes wonder if I’m not tough enough. With a VO2 of 73 (according to my watch) should I be able to run faster? Maybe I need to learn how to hurt more.
@mikes57642 ай бұрын
Yeah, but I think you can't trust VO2 max from Garmin as a race time predictor. Firstly, because it might be 5-10% wrong, and secondly, because two runners with the same VO2 max can perform differently because of different running efficiecy (see Daniels Running Formula). Garmin predicts my VO2 max as 59, which corresponds according to Daniels Running Formula with a marathon time of 2.46. However, based on my recent 10K time of 38.44, Daniels estimates my VO2 at 54. Which is 8,5% less then Garmin's prediction. This prediction based on recent 10K time I trust more. It corresponds with a predicted marathon time of (f. Daniels) 2.59, which I see as doable for me on a good day.
@global-runner2 ай бұрын
Yes I never fully trust the Garmin assessments on anything. But they are a good comparative guide. My most recent marathon had me at 73 for VO2 max.
@mikes57642 ай бұрын
I also like to use it, not so much the exact number (though it looks nice) but to see if the VO2 max trend is going up in time. And tracking deep sleep and resting HR are also useful to me. VO2 max of 73 is mind blowing, it's associated with a 2.18 marathon by Daniels. "Only" 67 🙈 is needed for a time of 2.29. If you stay consistent, you build on what you already have, and I'm sure you will brake it next time 💪🏻!
@global-runner2 ай бұрын
Yes I agree. My vo2 max for Carmel was 71 and for Montreal was 73. So I knew that I was fitter comparatively. So here’s the real question - am I under-performing? Should I be running faster and is something else letting me down? Maybe I don’t know how to really suffer?

@@lukegilchrist298 true, but I was more leaning towards next year as he just ran Montreal. Montreal is a super difficult course, something flat would definitely work in his favour for the next attempt. Toronto is considered the faster of the two Ontario races, but Toronto is horribly organized and the downhill is brutal on the legs. I ran my BQ in Toronto and at 30ks we ran into the back end of the 5k race. So had to swerve through people walking. Hamilton seems to at least split the pack for the leaders.
