Music - Sail the Night
Lyrics
Growing up I was what most people would call a geek
You know the straight A students, who’d stress out over their grades and dedicate most of their time to study.
Yep, that was me.
From a young age it was instilled into our brains that if we want to make something of ourselves then we need to go to university!
I mean it was practically a necessity.
Why? Because it would increase your job prospects and ensure financial stability
And when you’re sixteen that’s the ultimate goal really.
I remember applying for college and the question that was often asked was -
Taz, what do you want to be?
I had no idea.
I wasn’t thinking about my future, I barely remembered the day of the week?
and I definitely did not deal well with responsibility
The truth is I never knew the answer to that question,
I based my choices down to my GCSE’s
I did well at Law so I figured, hey, a lawyer it shall be.
Studied hard, 2 years passed and I finally started university.
Uni was anything but easy.
Reading lists were ever - growing, stress was at an all time peak
read, eat, sleep, repeat.
cram for the exam you have next week.
It was crazy.
I’d love to tell you stories about how I was having the time of my life and going to crazy parties
but I can’t really
The truth is I spent most nights exhausted, reading case law at a 24 hour library.
I was living the dream.
3 years later and I finally got myself a bachelor’s degree.
and that’s when it hit me.
I came to the realisation, that this isn’t who I want to be.
After graduation came the stress.
Filling in one job application after the other, dreading the impending student loan debts
I was a mess.
Struggling to get by with only one question on my mind,
What’s Next?
The next few months were hard
fill out an application form, get rejected, and then inevitably fall apart
Build myself back up and restart
Felt like I had an empty future ahead of me and I wasn’t getting very far.
Stop. Reassess.
The anxiety hits me all over again.
back to the drawing board I guess.
Overwhelmed by the stress - I confess.
I don’t know what’s next.
and we’re back to the first step.
Looking back now, hitting rock bottom was the best thing that could’ve happened to me.
It took feeling like an absolute failure to finally set me free.
I had a fresh start, a chance to rebuild myself
Be whoever I wanted to be.
Because what’s there to lose when you have nothing?
but what’s there to gain? - everything.
I started writing, creating films, performed spoken poetry,
discussed important topics and talked about things that mattered to me,
I made people stop, think, feel,
For the first time in my life I was doing something that felt real.
No more pressure to compete,
I simply worked hard doing what I love and told myself, whatever will be will be
I grew an online audience, connected with people worldwide, and for the first time in my life I saw things so clearly.
No longer adhering to social constructs, I’m choosing my own path, and I’ve never felt more free.
I want to feel, like really feel.
Travel the world and connect with people.
I want to help, make an impact, tell incredible stories,
conquer all my darkest fears and live limitlessly.
No more running away anymore,
I want to delve into the unknown, take risks and chances,
because as cliche as it sounds we really do only live once,
and I don’t plan on taking that for granted.
So ask me again what’s next? and I’ll say the answer is easy.
What’s next is continuing to work hard doing what I love
and an infinite amount of opportunity.

it's almost weird how everytime you speak my mind. I'm 16 now and the only question I hear every day is: what do you want to be later? what are you gonna do? and most of the time I try to change the subject cause I really don't know and the future scares me. You're such a big inspiration for me. thank you

God, I never wanted you to stop talking.. and you literally just spoke my mind. You literally just made me feel. I wanna tell you I'm proud of you, like really really proud of you. Darling you're going places in life, trust me. and I wanna be there all the way. to tell u I'm proud of you over and over again. I might not know u in person, true. you have no flying idea about who I am, also true. but I love you. I love your mind, and I love how every single word u say hits deep. Just where I want it to hit. Again, I love you.

Taz I'm glad to hear things turned out better for you. I hope they stay that way forever and you remain happy. I'm 50, in a couple of days I'll be 51, and I don't have a "what's next". I'm divorced. Went through bankruptcy. Lost my house to foreclosure and had my car repossessed. Eventually I got evicted from a different house and was almost homeless if it wasn't for my sister finding me this apartment. I haven't worked for a few years now because I get anxiety/panic attacks and miss a lot of work. I filed for disability, due to my anxiety and depression and because I have a bad lower back where I can't lift much, and after 3 years of it being in court I just received a letter stating that my appeal has been denied. A few years back I cashed in my 401K to live on so now I have no retirement money to look forward to. So when I saw the title of this video you made it made me ask myself the question and I'm having a hard time seeing any "next". But that's mine and not yours to worry about. I am truly happy to see things working out for you and wish you continued success. Thank you !

Honestly this is what I think everyday Because I'm only 14, but I stress about what I want and I want to be free and do things and live my life but I wonder HOW DO I DO THAT? I would live to write poetry, write books, write stories, but how do I do that? I'm already writing my things, I'm working on books but I fear I can never finish One and although I have my dream it'll never come true and my life will just repeat always. How unfair is that actually? Where from do I get the money? My books will never achieve any success, I can say that for sure, because they're bad. How do I live?

This spoken word poem was very needed for me and really struck a chord, so thank you :) I have been watching you for a while but have only just made a KZbin account today. I started at uni in September studying a History degree but left last week because I realised that it just wasn't for me. I have spent the past year since I first applied to uni feeling very lost, knowing that I wasn't making the choices that were right for me but without really knowing any alternative path to take. I've come home to find myself being seen differently by a lot of people who know me because of my decision but this video has made me realise that at the end of the day all that truly matters is that I'm happy. I hope to go back to uni next year to study English Language instead as I think that that's where my real passion lies. I thought it would be a fun project for me to create a KZbin account to upload content to and to invest my time into whilst I'm trying to figure out the whole uni thing as it's something I've been wanting to try for a while but have never had the confidence/right mentality to do. I've only recently become aware of the existence of spoken word poetry and have KZbinrs such as yourself to thank for my discovery of it. It's something that I've been starting to try myself and within the next couple of weeks/months hope to have gotten myself to a stage where I feel like I can share my own poetry on KZbin. Thank you for posting such a lovely video and I wish you luck with everything in the future
