Zacatecas is well worth the visit for its history and arquitecture, and use of cantera pink stone. It was the first colonial Mexican city named a UNESCO world heritage site (and best preserved for many years). It was the 2nd largest city early during the colonial period (its charter given to it by King Philip II of Spain), and one of the most important ones, as its where most of the silver was produced for the Spanish Empire at various points during the 1600s. Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende get more press, but Zacatecas was the original silver city and UNESCO site. Has been nicknamed the Athens of Mexico. Zacatecas was also the first city in Latin America to employ the teleferico/Swiss cable car, and was actually the first in the world to bisect an entire city (as opposed to a ski village or town). Also has a beautiful theater. It has a number of impressive museums for a virtually unknown city by international tourists from the well curated Eden Mine and natural history musuem, to Pedro Coronel, Goitia, etc. some of whom house Dali, Picasso, Kandinsky works. Also a museum of the Mexican Revolution battle which took place there (Toma de Zacatecas), and a mausoleum of illustrious figures atop the Bufa Hill. Also the cathedral, and a number of churches and convents dating between 1500s-1800s. It was one of the largest religious and religious art centers in colonial Latin America. Its also the city with the best preserved aqueduct from the colonial era in Mexico and one of 3 of the best known cities for this alongside Queretaro and Morelia. The nearby town of Jerez is also beautiful and historic which is why its a Pueblo Magico (Magical town). Very little was scratched here. But I do understand people are afraid. I partly grew up nearby Jerez, and at one point not more than 15 years ago, Zacatecas was one of the safest states in Mexico. Unfortunately the biggest cartels in Mexico are in neighboring states of Jalisco and Sinaloa, and Zacatecas is right in the middle of these 2, making it a very recent battleground. People from other states have made it this way today. I do know family lives there still and my brother visits regularly. I would recommend the city for its rich history, culture, and arquitecture. Its just nowadays one has to keep in mind, its no longer the carefree area it once was, which is sad.

A lot of folks don't know Mexico actually pretty much influenced that wild wild west American theme/look. Mexican vaqueros/charros heavily influenced American cowboys once northern Mexico became southwestern United States from Texas through, New Mexico, to California and more. The Rodeo actually originated in Mexico, along with bull riding, and lassoing/roping all having it's roots in Mexico.

Yes the wild Wild West theme is so strong here! We kept photographing the men on horseback, and our guide thought it was funny because it’s an everyday thing in this part of Mexico.

@@RunTheAtlas Wow! That’s awesome to hear. Northern Mexico from Sinaloa, Sonora, Nuevo León, and other northern states is huge on the cowboy or ranching lifestyle it’s embedded in Mexican culture from the music down to the classic Mexican ranchera movies and the over-dramatic western/ranchera Mexican soap operas that my mother loves so much lol.

I was lucky to be born in Zacatecas. I loooove Zacatecas city. It is an architectural gem which is on part with European towns. I actually love the fact that there is not a lot of international turism. Turists are sometimes annoying to locals anywhere in the world. We zacatecanos are not very friendly with strangers unlike other parts of Mexico. We are kind of known for being cold. Zacatecas is magical.. especially at night.

Back in late 90’s early 20’s there was an influx of young people, college kids from the USA and Europe visiting Zacatecas; I was shocked considering Zacatecas is about churches, museums, cafes and nightclubs; I wondered what appealed to them in Zacatecas instead of the beach. I find my hometown amusing but to me you don’t have much fun around there unless you’re from there.

Zacatecas is a beautiful colonial city! People are beautiful inside and out! Like for real! Unfortunately, Zacatecas receives a lot of bad rap due to what is going on with organized crime. What people must understand is that Zacatecas is an entire state the size of South Carolina and it is not fair to lump the reputation and crime stats of an entire state into one city. It's like lumping all the crime stats of California into just the city of Los Angeles. Anyhow, all I want to say is take what you hear or read about Zacatecas with a grain of salt. Still Zacatecas is the best- period!!!

Actually it is not just Zacatecas city or one city full of crime. As an example we were displaced by criminals in the southern part last year. Jerez, Zacatecas capital, Fresnillo, Tepetongo, Villanueva, Nochistlán, Pinos and other municipalities have lots of crime, our government is a piece of shit in our state and the whole country, terrorists run and rule the country were there is no justice and you know it. If you haven't suffer criminality don't lie, my car was taken at 1:30 a.m. december 17th 2022 and my wife passed out because of that, they kept displacing people for months and stealling cars from other neighbors, let the world know what is really happening. As up today there are other terrorist cartels in our land and government coaperates with them. So sorry to ruin your comment but shit like this happens in small comunitties and neighborhoods.

This is to every foreigner who wants to come: for a day here you must carry on minimum 500 pesos in cash but not just the 500 mxn bill, better have it in change like: one 200mxn bill, two 100mxn bill, a 50mxn, two 20mx, and the rest in coins (we have 10mxn, 5mxn and 1 mxn) and this amount is just for one person. To transportation: better use uber o didi, taxis aren't so bad but neither so cool... Better avoid using local taxis and buses because you can get lost, we haven't a map to see their routes, we have to memorize it.

Correct, Zacatecas is on the US State Department “no not travel” advisory and hence there were 0 US tourists there. We saw the warnings and were able to take precautions and hired a guide during our trip. Our guide mentioned that between the pandemic and the bad publicity, it dropped tourism to a new low. The highways here connect to all parts of the US and that’s where some of the crimes happened. He also said to avoid Fresnillo. We speak Spanish and have done extensive Mexico and Latin America travel, so we felt safe during our trip. We advise other travels to research and make their own decisions: travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/mexico-travel-advisory.html#Zacatecas

It is unsafe because it is the way to the south and north and everyone wants to control the center of the country.

It's beautiful! I'm a little surprised how quiet it seems there. My neighbor is from there and they are constantly partying and being loud. I was assuming it was a cultural thing because when she went home to Mexico she posted videos of everybody in the streets with fires partying all night long. It's not fun living next door to them although she is super sweet. Her husband on the other hand is one of the my least favorite people on the planet lol.

The city received bad publicity following a few incidents and is still recovering. The local people are incredibly chill and helpful. As a tourist, we felt safe - but note we also didn’t go out at night. We had a guide with us for most of our trip. I recommend avoiding Fresnillo - this is the city where a lot of the crime happened. Avoid looking showy - as you can see in the video we are wearing a lot of black. No beach clothes. You must speak at least intermediate Spanish to travel here, hardly anyone speaks English.
