NFL trades are so useless I’ve realized. I guess it’s mostly because of money, but like I don’t even get how a multiple all pro defender gets dealt for a 3rd round pick or something🤷‍♂️. Like that Stephon Gilmore trade comes to mind. I truly think it’s crazy though.

@@user93279 Dude, this isn't even close to the Gilmore trade. Gilmore was traded b/c the Colts didn't have enough cap space and only got a 5th round pick. But, he was a DPOY, 2x First Team All-Pro, 5x Pro Bowler & Interception Co-leader. I love Sweat but he only made 1 Pro Bowl and that's it. We got him at the 26th pick and had him for 4 years on a rookie contract and traded him for a 33rd pick (No noticable difference in NFL Draft). So, now we're going to get another player on a rookie contract basically where we got Sweat and can use that $$ we saved on an impact free agent. I know that's how the Commanders look at it. They view it as draft capital and that's why they have the most free agent $$ in the NFL this year. Just a little education

Who knows how more effort from him could’ve possibly changed the dynamic of the game. It seems when he really tried he was wreaking havoc and then he’d take full plays off. As a Redskins fan watching this it must be really frustrating because you know and experienced it firsthand on multiple occasions watching this guy. As a niners fan I’m just learning the reason why he’ll never be an elite player despite all his talent. Thanks for the confirmation.

Fact of the matter is that the last two "generational" "once every 25-30 years" talents at DE have not lived up to their expectations. One of them was Chase Young, and the other was Jadeveon Clowney. Athleticism alone is just not enough to be great in the NFL.

Chase Young was nothing more than the highest paid Cheerleader on the Commanders. He was from Maryland & everyone was excited to see him come home and play for the Burgundy & Gold. Anyone telling you they wanted to trade back or didn't want him is lying. He was all the hype in the DMV for his first year & won the D.RO.Y. After his rookie year he was garbage. He did nothing to improve from year 1 to year 2. He had only one move, the swim move and once teams stopped that he was nothing more than statue on the field. His last 2 years he was afraid to get on the field. He just kept saying he was hurt. He was so pitiful, that when he was about to get traded he had his dad call the local radio stations and try to stump for him. A professional NFL player getting his dad to call the radio stations for him?!?! Wow. Then he went to a SB caliber team and still just stands around. 49'ers must've asked Bosa about him. I'd like to know what he said about him. If any team gives him a long term deal, i hope it buries your team for years to come. Garbage, just garbage.

I'm a Chase Young hater because I'm a Michigan fan. However, my main hater comment is gonna be that he only won the DROY award because of hype and how weak the competition was that year. When my Ravens passed up on him and let the 49ers have him, at first I was bummed because he is talented, but then I was relieved after seeing him do almost nothing on the 9ers. Well marcus peters is playing CB at 31 years old. Chase young is 24 years old. CB is incredibly hard to do at older age cause of how much speed and running you have to do. Marcus injury affected his play and didn't get much playing 2021 and 2022. Peters is way past his prime meanwhile chase young should be in his prime right now.

A number 2 overall pick, and defensive rookie of the year shows that the ability is there, but a lack of effort at times, and frequently taking plays off isn’t a good look. But the biggest criticism he got in Washington was his lack of discipline in setting the outside edge and maintaining proper position, free lancing instead. It’s an indication of being a selfish player … and it shows up too frequently when he realizes he has lost his one on one, and not getting a sack. He then quits on the play. Washington didn’t actually call Young out by name, but we often heard comments after poor defensive performances like how some guys were not maintaining pass rush discipline, and doing too much free lancing, which was an indirect reference to Young, who was obviously the player the comments were referring to. It’s a shame. The guy could be a top DE in the league, and looking at a huge contract with a Super Bowl contender, but putting bad tape out there never goes away, and is never forgotten. Nothing worse than showing no effort on plays, especially in championship games for crying out loud. It’s one thing if you’re playing a regular season game against a poor opponent, and clearly winning the game, and you just get fatigued and take a few breathers. But taking plays off in a Championship game? That’s totally inexcusable.

In his second year with Washington he was injured and ended up out for the year. At the beginning of the season he was still injured. Even without him Washington's defense started playing really well without him. Riviera heard Chase had recovered from his injury. Riviera was concerned that Chase might destroy the chemistry of his defense. To me I don't think Riviera thought Chase was a team player. Riviera was kinda saying he was a selfish player.

Chase had a strong Superbowl. I had noticed the lackadaisical effort on his part several weeks back and sent notes on several of the Niners media to that effect, that he's essentially just going through the motions and making an occasional play here or there. I really noticed it after Cle Ferrell went down and Chase was asked to play more snaps. Perhaps he just doesn't have the motor for it? He shows when he hustles, that he has the ability to do the job. And personality-wise, he seems a decent enough guy and will probably fit in well in any locker room. But, if I was in charge of the team, I will go for the slightly less talented player who could be counted on to do his job and give great effort all the time. He's going to command a significant contract and I couldn't justify the dollars spent for a talented player who excels with limited snaps. It pains me to say that, cause I like the guy.

When you expend a lot of effort, double teams, etc., it's important to manage your stamina. Save it for the next play. Jogging? He is moving toward the ball at all times. Also you have to be aware that Mahomes will run it back the other way and if slips back then you have to have someone to contain him. He has an impact every game every snap. How often was Bosa beating his double teams?

@@analyticalinsightReally? You really dont understand what he is saying? First thing he is saying is that the war in the trenches is done anaerobically, and some do that better than others. And when you're the defense who is attacking a high passing offense your stamina either has to be at a high level or you need to choose your battles so that you spread your stamina out. Also, sometimes your job is to contain. This means you need to go vertical to ensure you have not been pushed too far upfield or that your target...the QB has not stepped up into the pocket. On any given drive, the dfense has more energy expended than the offense. If there are three of your teammates getting ready to make the tackle, it makes sense to pursue lightly and save some of your energy. Do you pay this person as much as you would a Nick Bosa? No, always make sure you're not overpaying for average.

One thing he did at Washington was he would stop rushing, stand up, and leap up in the air (ball was not thrown his way!). After a while, the O tackle would notice this and push him back when he was in the air. That was funny to me.

This is a wonderful close look at a crucial issue. And it is very fair in commentary. Good points are made on both sides, for sure. On the other hand, Chase lessens effort when he accurately knows he's out of the play. It is difficult to see how his attempts (in this game) hurt the team in any material way. Still, Bosa etc never give up. That's a key difference. Well noted. The evidence here does change my view: there is plenty of room for improvement for Chase.

One of the things that bothered me about Chase was he wanted to rush from the upright stance while in Washington. I think the coaches wanted him down to keep his pads low on his get-off. At least he was willing to change for the 49ers. People in DC constantly made excuses for him, saying he was always double teamed, but that wasn't very often, in truth.

He does get held a lot though. And going vertical or standing up as everyone is saying is also indicative of containment where looking up to make sure you have not been pushed too far upfield and making sure the QB has not stepped up into the box is a necessity.

You could "call" holding on every play in the NFL. It isn't actually holding unless the officiating crew calls it holding. Unless the defensive player is holding on with their arms outside the framework of their body then they aren't calling it. Personally I think the game needs a rules reset and anytime that any player that isn't tackling grabs any uniform it should be holding.

I'm not upset at the NFC Championship game jog, there were way too many Niners legs in the way for him to make a diving stop but seeing an idea of it in the SB is a cause for concern. Ohio State fans first really noticed Chase Young giving up on plays late in the 3rd quarter in the 2019 playoff game against Clemson. Late in the game when Ohio State needed him the most, his stamina or some would say effort was underwhelming. Extremely talented, but if the talent isn't being utilized with effort it's worthless.

Props to observation and film-breakdown; @7:50, as you put it, he has a tendency to "stand straight up", correct, Chase has a tendency to play with a high-center of gravity, and again @9:10, "accepts" a beat after the snap. He has a tendency to line line up wide, or pursue wide on the snap which is largely the reason he tore his right (outside) ACL, he placed too much pressure on his right knee breaking outside before a sharp inside move. Relies on snap speed, "get off" as you put it, and loses interest of that does not beat his man.

Maybe his conditioning is not the best so he’s trying to save himself for the big plays or the ones he starts to win. He definitely looks like he gives up too early and doesn’t understand that even though the play may not be in front of him, if he keeps grinding there’s a good chance he can still make a contribution.

Not everyone has the same sized gas tank and its hard to watch because most people assume people with great athletic talent also have great stamina but they are two different things. Most of the time undersized passrushers get worn down by being run at but because hes big people think he doesnt expend to much energy to hold ground or beat blocks. Truth is hes a passing down olb shaped like a all 3 down DE. I will say this. He did perform at the combine. Thats weird for a passrusher

You can't do this when you are touted at one point a generational talent #2 pick. We always compared him to Jadeveon Clowney, but he seems to be lesser than Clowney considering the 2023 Clowney had.

Either way you look at it, Young should never have been drafted #2. It’s his draft status that makes him look bad. He’s more of a late first round, second round talent and that’s being generous. He’s not nearly as talented as people make him out to be. If he had all this talent, we’d be seeing him using spin moves and have multiple weapons in his arsenal. If he were a second round pick, no one would be scrutinizing him this way. What also hurt him in Washington was the emergence of Micah Parson. Parsons rookie year was way more dominant than young’s.

there is something to be said for concerving some extra effort and energy for the big money dowms and reps. when your team absolutely needs you to make a play. Chris Jones is exceptionally good at that. I guess you could try to argue Chase is trying to do the same thing. The difference is that Chase Young doesn't seem to deliver much in return when you do need him to. There's not much upside at all with him.

That’s what we call “high motor” (Bosa) vs Low-Effort (Young) I’m a 39 year old Washington fan, & have been saying this ever since his 2nd year in the league. A tiger doesn’t change its stripes. Chase relies on his name but that’s not enough in the NFL. If we’re being honest, Chase shouldn’t have won ROY, it should have been Jeremy Chinn from Carolina that year, but Chase’s name won it for him. I didn’t even want to draft him, I wanted us to trade that pick & pick up extr ammo, but nope. Same thing with Haskins; I thought we should have kept Cousins & never traded for & signed Alex Smith. Gave the Chiefs two-2nd round picks & just let Cousins walk. So glad Snyder is gone.

The war in the trenches is done anaerobically, which means you hold your breath throughout the majority of the confrontation. So you choose your battles. Some can choose more often due to having high tolerance to anaerobics. Add that to being on the defensive side of the ball where the offensive line is holding throughout the battle and I can see why he chooses when to fight his battles. Lastly I am curious to what his PFF scores say. His job on some of these lower effort plays may be to just contain.. Now you add all this up and ask, does it mean we pay him less than a Nick Bosa? Well, hell yes. Don't overpay for average. Edit: after reading the comment section, I feel your title is incorrect. There are plenty of people wanting to admit this about Chase Young.

The most I've ever seen this actually mentioned, or even come close to being directly stated was in his quite low "Stamina" rating in Madden. Even though he's still got a quite overall rating, his stamina is much lower than what you would see for like any other player of a similar rating at his position.
