I still use a 20-year-old D800. I may get a D850 now that they are showing up used in excellent condition, and at a significant reduction in cost. I guess people are switching to the D7.

What are your thought on mirrorless? I can't afford and as a sport/event photographer I am very worried

I held out for a long time on switching to mirrorless. In the early days of mirrorless cameras, I felt like the image quality wasn't quite up to par with DSLR cameras, but that has changed. Especially for sports/events, mirrorless cameras are great, as most mirrorless cameras with electronic shutters can shoot 15-30 frames per second, and they are generally much smaller than their DSLR counterparts. I would recommend looking at a camera that is not the newest model out, which can usually be bought for a very reasonable price.

Do you usually take photos at zero exposure value, or -1.0 exposure value, or +1.0 exposure value?

It really depends on the shot, but I do try to make that decision before taking the shot--and that has come with experience. It used to be a guess, but it's more of a reflex at this point. What's important is 1) knowing which metering mode you're in (if not shooting manual) 2) how you want to expose the image (do u want even exposure? darker? lighter? is the scene evenly lit?). If I am shooting a portrait of a person who is backlit, I automatically know that my camera will automatically give me a reading that creates a silhouette, so I will overexpose by at least 1 stop prior to even pressing the shutter. My photos are not always candid. I decide whether it's the complete, undisturbed moment moment I want, or if it is just the person. If it is just the person, I will approach them and introduce myself, tell them what drew me to them, and ask politely if I may take their portrait. Most people are receptive when you are honest, upfront and polite. Thank you for watching!
