One time in a dress rehearsal, a violinist and violist in my orchestra decided it would be fun to swap instruments during the break, and then didn't know what to do when we started playing again, so they had to disrupt the entire orchestra to swap back. In a DRESS REHEARSAL.

Everyone who has never played violin or viola will immediately take out the instrument without the shoulder rest and grab the bow and then just start making noises. They only know the movements from a video, I doubt they have never actually played the instrument before. I don’t want anyone who has no experience or I don’t trust to even pick up the instrument. As a person in student orchestra, some of things happen on accident, and the students at my school are VERY sensitive so as simple as letting people know you can play a part is considered insulting. When I learned vibrato, I told my friends because I hadn’t told anyone so I was excited, it was a mess.

I'm a violist and once in an orchestra I played with several years ago, one of my colleagues a desk ahead of me who was NOT principal decided it was cool to turn to my deskie and reprimand him about playing too loudly. I do not feel bad that both my deskie and me put him back in his place. What a marvelous way to get fired.

This brought back memories. I swapped between Tuba and Euphonium, depending on which was needed more in a song (we had a couple tubas, one dedicated Euphonium). Euphonium person was basically the one described in this video. They were super cocky about this one solo, bragged about it, they always put me down, etc. Well, day of the concert, they chickened out, and I had to fill in on all the pieces, including the ones I was used to playing tuba on, and including the solo they were "so proud of..."
