Thanks for your content. I have learned more this year from watching your videos and putting your fundamentals too use in my bee yard than I have the last 4 years combined. I lost all of my hives last year. But this year I was able to turn 3 nucs into 10 hives.

I'd like to share with you what works for me. I had just one small cup of worker bees and a queen to start with. No drawn out frames of comb. I quickly waxed the foundations I had with plenty of wax on them. Put all in the hive along with a gallon of 1 to 1 with pollen supplement. The hive did thrive.

Great content David!!! So much to get done in July, get the rest of my supers off, treat for mites, start to make splits and fix queen issues. Your content is always timely and pertinent. We missed you at the IL state convention in Quincy. Still a good event, but missed your wisdom there!

My bees seem to be having trouble with the black foundation .. i see most of your big frames are yellow. Do you put a layer of wax on the yellow ones? Or are they just better to use ? Thanks for your video

Great video. One question, when you add a new queen from the mating nuc what do you do with the rest of the bees from that mating nuc, do you add all of those bees as well and at the sametime as the new queen? Thanks

Is it my imagination, or was the queen we saw in this video on the small side? Reminded me of a relatively newly emerged queen after a swarm, supercedure, or split. Is it possible this hive is on the back end of a queen replacement, and she is a virgin or newly mated, but not laying yet?

Is it a good idea to replace the queen in July? Could she have just shut down to reserve resources?

So does that mean most swarms have a lot of 12 - 17 day old bees to make comb?
@patgooch1762

Hey David, I learn a lot from your videos. I'm wondering why swarms are so good at drawing comb when the population of a swarm is older than 17 days, or so i think. Don't bees need to be a little older than17 days to fly. Thanks
@apveening
@apveening Жыл бұрын
Bees can fly a lot sooner, but usually don't as they don't need to with their age appropriate tasks. A swarm also contains younger bees that only have to keep up with the rest of the swarm, they don't need to navigate by themselves.

David, after frames are drawn, how do you preserve your comb? What are your thoughts on using “Xentari” or Bacillus Thuringia aizawai spray? I watched a very interesting video from Back bee broken beekeeping on KZbin. I have used bacillus as a natural spray on my veggies, but was concerned about it with my bees. We would love to hear your thoughts.

In the beekeeping world it's known as B402 Cretan. Bee companies like Dadant sell it for $200 per quart. You can buy it cheaper if you want to mix it yourself. It does NOT kill the eggs. It really has to be ingested by the smaller instar larvae. It's temperature sensitive, meaning it needs to be stored between 41(f) an 68 (f). According to the label you have to wear goggles, gloves, a NIOSH approved particle filtering respirator and correct clothing to cover skin. I just throw mine in the freezer as it kills all stages including eggs. Of course you only use it after you harvest your honey supers and no bees are present just before storage.

You should have considered shaking down the bees to a single deep until your queen gets jiggy on laying. They often shut down if the hive is too large based on the amount of bees present. Saves you from killing a perfectly good queen....

I hear you saying that when you add a new frame of brood you have 7,000 more bees, however I have never seen a frame of brood that was completely full, so maybe 5000 bees in reality

I just was scratching my head thinking the same thing …how do I get them to draw out my frames in July ??? Lol…thanks I’ll add some sugar water …1 to 1 or 2 to 1 ? Tell me what do you think …also I noticed your feeder hole was a little larger than your quart jars …go to your local hardware store and purchase a 70 mm hole saw ..it will fit perfect to the small mouth mason jar…
