My biggest tip is to research where the plant originally grows. A lot of plants say full sun, but where I live , full sun is torture. My elephants ears get 3 -4 hours of sun daily, and are huge. After I moved them from direct sun all day they took off. I have Angels trumpet, recommended 6 to 8 hours of full sun daily, moved mine where they get 3 hours of morning sun and dappled shade after that and they grew huge ! Some tropicals/semi tropical say full sun, but actually grow on the jungle floor covered by the canopy. Some need higher humidity etc. Look up where a plant originates from and give it like conditions. Huge game changer ! I know you covered this subject before but it works great for me. Thanks for your videos. ❤

In the past I watered the few plants I had, all at the same time. Then I realised that each plant has its own watering requirement. Therefore we should do so only when the plant needs it. The more you read about plants, the more aware you become of what you have been doing wrongly. We learn a lot by watching these videos. Thank you!

So basically, ANYTHING you do to a plant will cause it stress. It can handle low levels of stress but not multiple stressors all at once.

When I get new plants that were on clearance and needed salvaging, that's the one time I tend to trim new plants. Then I ONLY remove any fully dead leaves. Damaged leaves get left alone until I see the plant is growing well, but those dead leaves get removed to avoid fungus or other nasties setting in. Also, fungus gnats LOVE the dead leaves. Ick. LOL

I will openly admit that the wife and I made one of these mistakes during the winter here in Alberta Canada. We stopped by our local IKEA and bought some plants. Two of the plants we bought was an Aglaonema and a Money Tree. We made the mistake of not protecting the plants from the cold air and wrapping the plants in a bag and plastic. After a few days in our home, both plants leaves started turning a yellow/brown colour and we ended chopping the dying foliage off. Thankfully both plants have made a full recovery and we still have them to this day. Lesson learned.

I carry garden fleece with me, so I can wrap any plants I buy to keep them warm. One Morrisons didn’t even provide a plastic travel bag that the plants come in. I made them wrap it in florist paper. When I buy a new plant most of the time it's not planted in the proper medium, pot or in correct position and if I don't repot I may certainly lose it. Last time I decided not to repot was alocasia. The original soil didn't dry out fast enough and I lost the alocasia to root rot. Sometimes(mostly with pothos) I don't have to repot. Usually producers get this one right. With stuff like dracena it's pretty much never right. So, I would say one has to approach every new plant individually. I don't know what nurseries do in England so I can only speak from personal experience in US.

I bought two Pythos plants, one after the other. They both died. Soon as I got them home I noticed they seemed to be root bound so I repotted them in a big pot with nice new potting soil. I watered them good and they died in a couple of days. Incidentally my apartment is like a cave. Most of the light is artificial light. The one window gets sun but it also gets cold air around it. I really need help your information especially about the orchids is spot-on however, watering periods are very different where I live I live in Albuquerque New Mexico it was up around 102 103 degrees everyday all my outdoor plants that are hanging had to be watered everyday! Some because the dirt dried around the roots and the other was to cool the roots and the dirt off on fungus gnats, I would love to know I have been alternating neem oil and peroxide after about a year I think I finally got it under control but still have a few and this is indoors of course but what does neem oil and peroxide do to the actual soil and should I put fertilizer in it more often or a time-release fertilizer stick? I always wonder how far away I should put a plant if I quarantine it. I know that fungus gnats can fly but the others, like spider mites or thrips, don’t. I basically have two rooms with enough light for plants. If I am certain that there are no fungus gnats, can I keep it in the same room if it’s four or five meters away from the others? Somehow I couldn’t find anywhere how far those pests can move.
@SheffieldMadePlants

For spider mites the leaves would need to touch for them to transfer. Thrips can fly though so you'd need some space. 4/5 meters sounds like enough, especially if it's in a different room

What about some tips about caring for germinating/sprouting plants? I mean for me it is way more satisfying to grow something from seeds than just buy "ready" plant... even thoug saddly I made a lot of mistakes and have to restart my plant collection from the ground up multiple time(but with advices from Your channel - especially the ones about watering - I hope that finally all will go well). I also have general liking to plant fruits and vegetables (the very prospect of maybe having some fruits and vegetables out of the plants make it mach more appeling ot me than some purelu decorative ones) - like tomatoes, avocados, pomegranades, lemons or oranges. Few things I would definitely like to know... You said about pruning in many of Your videos, but freshly sprouted plants are surely not ready for that... so when it is good time to start pruning plants? Also I hears something about thining them out a bit when there are lot of sprouts (I often did start with quite a few seeds in on container to later replant them into separate pots) - but is it always right thing to do or maybe sometimes is better to separate all the plants (at least as much as it is possible by replanting). Also from what I heard some plants (like avocado) really don't like their roots disturbed, so for them shouldn't the root pruning be done only when they are already unhealthy? Also shouldn't such plants be replanted less often than normal (and perhaps to pot 3-4 sizes bigger instead of 1-2). Another thing is about the germination itself... one of the most important plants to me are pomegranades and I heard about the method with germinating them on wet paper towel in closed container... so what way is better - that or just planting them in the soil? Also how to avoid mold (It was big problem to me for a few last attempts of towel method... weirdly enough it went well on the first time... but later some time after planting to the soil the plands have died... some time after they started developing their first leafs... I geuss it was due to watering errors) - both in wet towel method and with covering/closing container in which they germinate in the soil. (Actually I would also like to try kiwi soon... I wonder which method would be better for it. And would pumpkin work as house pland? Would be cool to pland own pumpkin at home) And about soil itself... I've seen You said about mixing the coffe grounds right to the soil (or maybe was it or the other channel?) - but I always thought it has to be composted first... so it is actually safe and healthfull to just add coffe grounds to the soil? What about tea grounds? Would that be good for a potting mix for germinating seeds/freshly sprouted seeds from wet towel? (Also You said about wooden ashes, and that they are akaline... so wouldn't using both ashes and coffee grounds (as they are acidic as far as I know) kinda balance out?) And about composting... It is the thing I already tried a bit myself but... I'm not sure how to recognize the compost is ready to use... I once tried to use some of my homemade compost as sort of fertilizer for my potting mix... but the results weren't so great (but again it maybe cause of something entirely different...) - would using it for the potting mix for seeds or fresh seedling be a good idea or not?
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Жыл бұрын
You can prune your plants surprisingly early. This branches it out early and you get more stems. You need a few leaves for photosynthesis. I haven't heard that avocado plants don't like to have their roots disturbed. Most plants are fine with this in my experience. I only pot up when they need to be. I plant straight into soil for ease but the wet paper towel trick works fine. Tea and coffee can be added to soil and left to decompose.
