I read lots of Books on Management, Leadership, and Coaching. It took me 10 years to be good at Startups and how they really work.

This explains some of the angst I've felt over receiving "compliments" just like that. Thanks for the video. I downloaded the pricing guide, but the two coaching "products" don't include a time period. Are we talking about 4 total sessions, 6 total sessions, 18 total sessions? I'm assuming that's not the price for just one session. Please clarify. Thanks!

Nice post. Good job channeling Carol Dweck. Her book is “Mindset”.

Really appreciated the insight in this video. May I slightly disagree with you here. That fact that I am gifted at something or have a natural ability to do something does not mean that I didnt have to work to develop or refine it. For example, a gifted singer may attend voice lessons as a teenager to learn how to preserve their voice or maintain the same quality when dancing, etc. That's hard work. Of course, the opposite is also true where someone learned how to sing through hard work. I believe there's room for both in the same conversation - being gifted and perfecting that gift through hard work.

Yes, agreed. It's more around how you share praise or compliments with others in the way of saying "you are so gifted". Because the reality is more that you had a gift but worked really hard to perfect it. Appreciate you sharing with us here.

Great point! Was it the book Grit that talks about if you believe your success is natural rather than putting in the effort and you hit a wall, then you are LESS likely to keep pressing forward and MORE likely to give up.

Yes! Agreed and very true that putting in the effort vs viewing yourself as gifted motivates you to keep going!

I love this, Don! I’m going to be more cognizant of when I want to say that. As in the 60 minutes interview example, I wonder if people say ‘you’re gifted’ as a way to relieve them from feeling bad about something they’re feeling a lack of? I think a true gift may be those things we feel drawn to spend time doing, and in the accumulation of putting the hours in, we get better and better over time. I’ve seen that in myself and so many others.

Hi Don! Love this video and really appreciate the hook you used in your email subject line. I'm curious about how you're editing your videos. I love the jump to Zoom in and out; what tech and software do you use? Could you create a how-to for us, perhaps with your tech team's input? I remember recently you spoke about your social media manager making you look good!

Hi Shelby, we use Adobe Premiere and that affect is simply done by using the transform effect and setting keyframes from the position to a desired zoomed in position.

However, the person we most often see as "gifted" has a propensity or natural affluence (affinity) for that subject matter in the first place. AND, they've worked hard and consistently at the thing that is "natural" to them. I think those that react to specific words, for example in this case, really want to be recognized and acknowledged for the investment of time and energy. They might be better served if they acknowledged themselves instead. No need to "push back" or react because when you have the same level of self awareness as you do in your dedication to your craft, you can respond gracefully and only if necessary.

They definitely are drawn to an area that has natural affinity for, but the hard work has to be put in to maximize the opportunity. I think Novak responded with grace and dignity. Love that he was aware of his hard work.

Nice video, love the message. The Matt Syed 'Bounce' book is a great read along these lines. You seemed to refer to Novak as the greatest tennis player ever... did you forget to compare to Serena Williams? ;-)
