Hey, love this video. As someone who did a few month long trips in Europe I’d like to add some insight. You can probably wear tshirts and athleisure in Berlin, Germany and Parts of London, northern countries (Actually- absolutely because people wear sporty casual clothes there. But! Staying monochromatic is key. Don’t dress up in Berlin and Nordic countries. They just don’t dress up. It’s more about looking edgy like Brooklyn. However in France, Italy, Spain? People dress up classically even to go to the park. Little girls wear beautiful sundresses with ribbons, ladies do their hair, and wear maxi sundresses. Men are wearing plain shirts and trousers. So yes, make an effort to look elegant everyday. I still was comfortable. I wore linen pants, a roll up straw hat on days I needed sun protection. But to be honest. Carry your leggings. Just only wear black solids. I just would pair it with a white button down shirt over a sweatshirt. Lastly, I absolutely wear my Yankke hat. So do they. It’s the one acceptable baseball hat you do see. It’s considered fashionable in London and most northern countries. So you will see them. So to sum it up- it depends on the countries. Sporty countries? Black leggings, black tee ok. Dressy countries? No flip flops, stick with monochrome /neutral outfits.

I agree on the yankees hat but scandinavian capitals do dress business like. many are dressed edgy but many men wear blazers to bars.

I'm from one of the Nordic capitals, and unless you're a teen or in your early 20s, wearing head to toe athleisure will make you look like a tourist, unless you're going to do something athletic, like going to the gym or heading out for a hike. Yes, different trends are prevalent in different regions, but I'd still say that full-on athleisure may get you a covert side eye in the larger Nordic cities.

I find this funny. On the trains/Subways .... other nationalities are so loud ... they speak as if they're the only ones on the trains. So, the comments about Americans being obnoxious make me laugh. There are many other obnoxious nationalities out there. I don't agree with being that way... just defending the much misaligned American when it comes to being loud and obnoxious.

I’m in Spain currently, was in Paris, Barcelona, Valencia and now am in Madrid. Honestly, every local is wearing colorful clothes, athletic clothes, short shorts, denim shorts. It’s just us Americans trying to blend in that are wearing low key neutrals, me included 😂. In my experience so far, everyone dressed like we do in LA, no one cares and no one is judging or paying attention. Wear what makes you feel good. You are traveling, you need to feel comfortable and like yourself. 💜

Black, white, grey and navy is my standard European color palette. I love the look of tan/cream, but it looks terrible on me. Leggings are only for under dresses for warmth during the winter. For summer, linen and cotton fabrics rule and look much better than hot polyester. Wide leg or loose fitting denim jeans are popular. And I always wear trench coats for the cooler months. I know puffer coats pack easily but yep, total tourist. On our flight home from Paris, a young lady welcomed me to the US and wished me a good trip. 😆 That’s when I knew I’d nailed it fashion-wise. I agree with everything you mentioned.

I find it really funny what Americans think you should wear in Europe. I'm from Munich in Germany and I travel to other European countries often. A lot of what I've just heard isn't true at all. Of course we wear sneakers, whether athletic or plain white. Of course we wear baseball caps and yes, we also carry backpacks. And we wear leggings! And flip-flops! High heels too. It all depends on the occasion you're wearing something. Sneakers to the office are totally fine, leggings not. Flip-flops in the evening? Better not, do prefer chic sandals or high heels. In our free time we often wear denim, mostly jeans, but also shirts, skirts or dresses made of denim. So: Not everything that has been reported here is true. And it very much depends in which European country you are in.

I'm Greek and I don't know what this lady and other American KZbinrs are talking about. Except I think they are having posh holidays and confuse that setting to everyday living. Heading on a 10 day Mediterranean cruise in July. I am packing gauze pants and linen tops. I have some shorts, but they are bermuda length and appropriate for any venue. I also am packing dresses for day trips, too. I will take a baseball cap (easy to attach to my personal item on the plane) for beach and boat trips. I find those floppy or jute/rattan hats are useless when it's windy or getting on and off a boat or skiff. I have terrible feet and must wear orthotics, so I bought some all white Skechers slip on sneakers (similar to the Dr. Sholl's) to wear with pants, shorts, and dresses. I have different needs because I will be on a ship and doing excursions in Italy (3rd time there), Spain, Malta, and Cannes, France. I plan to be colorful in Cannes. It is difficult because I am a plus-size woman and over 50, so I want to dress to hide my flaws, and dress age-appropriate. I think age-appropriate clothing is a HUGE European trend. In the US we seem to not care how we look. We use the excuse that we can do what we want, but in Europe they dress for themselves and out of respect for others. I get sick when I see American tourists in short shorts and t-shirts. It's like we have NO respect for the cultures we visit.

I've lived in the UK, France and Italy in my teens and early 20s and have traveled in a lot of the other European countries since I became an adult. Yes, neutrals are likely going to be a safe bet, but that doesn't mean you can only wear greys, blacks, white and shades of brown. Especially in the summer, you'll see people in blues, greens, purples etc. but I will agree with you on the fact that neon colours are less likely to be commonplace. You can also definitely wear prints, like stripes or other geometric prints, different kinds of florals etc.

I tend to overdressed sometimes. I love color. In NYC people tend to wear a lot of black; however, a color with a neutral ( especially in the winter) is a go to. In the summer people tend to wear white and lighter colors in cotton or linen. Sneakers and sandals is commonplace. In Philly most everyone looks like a clone of each other. This means mostly T-shirts and tank top in summer and, sweat shirts in winter. Shorts in summer and Jeans in winter. I tend to stick out all the time 😂. I wear anything I like. Of course, the place and weather determine what choices I have available to me. If I walk the dog, I'm more casual. To go to a doctor's appointment, I do casual chic. I lived in London, UK for a year and everyone was SOOO dressed up there all the time. Even to the pub, full on suits for men, and dresses for women! I have also spent a lot of time in Switzerland on and off -they are more casual, but same, no athleisure wear, no jeans, no branding. I would disagree with the heels though -yes, you have to be strategic about what kind of heels (blocks, wedges, chunky heels), but I always bring lots of pairs! I would also say that people who live around the Mediterranean wear more colour than those who live inland. I think the best thing about European fashion, is that they make looking trendy, look so effortless! Thanks Dana!

As someone from the UK - I think the only reason someone would be in a suit in a pub is because they went straight from work (nobody would put a suit on purely to go to the pub) 😅

I'm chuckling as I watch this. I've traveled to all the places you mentioned, and I was convinced of everything you're saying at one time, but at 70 years old. Honesty, I just don't care what others are thinking. I love color and I wear it as I please. However, some things are common sense. For example Daisy Duke's don't look good in the USA or anywhere else. Some American's often look trashy here in the states, too much boobs exposed, so they dress the way they are use to dressing! Flip flops are not comfortable on cobblestone streets, common sense! The other thing is unless you speak the language people know you're American no matter what. So be comfortable, but not trashy! Be respectful of the places you visit. If a church says, no shorts and cover your head, respect that, and more importantly, respect yourself as a woman!

I love your style and I always use trips as an excuse to shop for cute outfits. I don’t want a picture in front of the vatican with a basic tee and fanny pack 🤮 I wish Americans dresses more elegant like Europe. I feel like my inner German is calling me to move there. Thanks, leaving for Rome next week!!

I was in Paris this April and almost everyone wore sneakers or some kind of low black boot. With the exception of really crazy colored large running shoes, you could get away with any kind of sneakers as long as it’s more neutral. Also, lots and lots of jeans. I’m kind of confused about why you said people we weren’t wearing denim… The French especially were wearing denim. maybe it’s more of a Paris thing? (I agree about the short shorts though.) I had always thought you couldn’t wear sneakers in Paris, and I literally took some pictures of everyone in the street in sneakers, Parisians and tourists alike.

We just got back from Vienna and other cities -= I saw a ton of young men wearing sports shirts and sweatshirts. We went to this awesome mall in Bratislava and my husband needed socks so we went to Primark, we saw a ton of Nirvana t-shirts (which I saw twenty-somethings wearing in Vienna), Michigan state sweatshirts and like LA laker stuff - we thought it was hilarious. My 15 year old insisted on wearing his Ohio State sweatshirt and got a lot of positive comments on it - he thought that was funny. I saw a lot of young women in Vienna wearing plain baseball caps - which made me happy because I have to wear a hat in the sun - I am very light sensitive and my hair is fine and doesn't last in any wind. Basically - if you are in a tourist area - you are a target. The best thing is to just be aware and not make eye contact with the pushy vendors, I wear either very dark sunglasses or mirror sunglasses. Having a very good RBF helps too. :) Most of the young women in Vienna were wearing linen pants or wide leg pants. We went to Schonbrunn palace and I noticed there were a ton of young dressed up women and realized everyone goes there to do their instagram photos on the palace grounds - it was fun to people watch! I totally agree about bringing workout clothes - I brought one pair of workout shorts - they were the only thing I packed that did not get worn. :)

copenhagen has an edgy population and a hippy culture but on the whole they dress casual elegant. in stockholm there was a bit more of a business vibe. I feel like zara is a safe style to fit in. street sneakers and conservative minimalist clothing. copenhagen was my favorite. have fun!

I partially agree with your observations. I live in Berlin and yesterday came back from a business trip to Munich. It was shocking again to see how good ppl are dressed in Munich and how fucked up the ppl run around in Berlin. Messy hair, cigarettes and tattoos are the common thing here. Fortunately, I've lived in Munich for 14 years and adopted the way ppl dress and behave there. So, when I moved to Berlin for work, I was very annoyed about the manners of Berlin ppl. Now I kind of got used to it but I still wear my office dress on the street and yes, I get some strange looks from ppl when I do groceries etc. Originally, I'm from Northern Germany where ppl are dressing right in the middle of Munich and Berlin. A high quality pullover / jumper and some non-ribbed jeans with white sneakers are always a good choice in Lower Saxony / Bremen. And Scandinavian countries can be compared to this, I think. In your video, I guess you're mostly referring to the Mediterranean countries like Spain, France and Italy. Those countries have a different vibe. The weather is way better, no need to wear outdoor gear due to less rain compared to Northern Europe. They can wear wool coats in winter. In Northern Germany / Europe that wouldn't be warm enough and wool doesn't protect from the snow and rain. However, you're almost always good to go wearing black linen pants and a white shirt or a one-colour longsleeve without any prints. Prints (unless small flowers) come with a kind of cheap look, like someone doesn't care what he/she is wearing (except for kids). For the rest, I totally agree with TiemposDePaz' comment.

What I do notice when I travel to Europe, women wear a few sizes smaller clothes, really really tight, lots of platforms for shoes, even at the supermarket women have way too much make up on. At the beach they were a lot less no matter what their shape which is also fine because they show how confident they are with their bodies. I visit Europe every year as an American and never have issues .

When I was in Rome in August a couple of years ago I was noticing I seemed to be the only one wearing open style sandals. I finally asked a local lady in a shop and she said that local people won't wear open toe shoes because the city is so dirty. So most locals will always wear a closed toe shoe... like a loafer or trendy running shoe. She said "there's nothing worse than walking in something wet on the sidewalk and it getting on your bare toes". And she was right, not everyone picks up after their dogs, and god knows what else is on the streets. Imagine standing trying to wash your foot off because of something gross. Eewwwwww. Needless to say, I purchased a pair of cute closed toe shoes.

As one who has spent a lot of time in Europe: Totally agree on shoes as they are a dead giveaway, but I would include the white sneakers as a no no as well. Sorry, it looks sooo American. I always wear leather shoes and never heels. Although I don’t wear jeans abroad I have noticed most of the jean wearers in France are French. Also, don’t wear a lot of makeup and don’t be loud, lol.
