Note the WHITE Roofs on nearly all the buildings. Being a heavily populated island, fresh drinking water is sourced from all the white roofs, which were once covered in lime mortar, which also has anti-bacterial properties. These days a special white paint designed to reflect ultra-violet and maintain water purity is used.

As a teenager I spent many summers in Bermuda, not through personal wealth or anything but through the gift of distant family relations. The beaches are indeed spectacular. Coming from a large North American city this place was the first time I was able to see the Milky Way. All fresh water comes from people’s roof tops and is stored underneath their homes in cisterns. I haven’t been there in decades, but I do remember being warned about the strict British style dress code for men and women when going out in public, if we were to ever venture in to town. The Bermuda accent was like crossing proper high class British with a Jamaican patois twang. Lots of sunken treasure in and around that island from centuries of looting and shipwrecks.

I've been to Bermuda many times. It's my absolute favorite place to vacation. It looks tropical but it's not. It's quaint with plenty of beaches and golfing. The houses (for the most part) are huge and it is expensive. Hamilton is a very nice town and St. George's is quaint with a historical feel. And the beaches. Horseshoe Bay is my absolute favorite.
@62CristoforoКүн бұрын
Yaaay, Horseshoe Bay. As a kid I remember that place; paradise. We also went to smaller, more secluded and lesser known beaches like Grape Bay.

If I had the money to spare (all things considered), I may live there, but one downside is that while the beaches and water are gorgeous, the average water temperature isn't too warm. No surprise given its location, but I'd probably consider the Caribbean or something else to get that nice warm water benefit.

Bermuda = the largest (by population) remaining outpost of the British Empire. I sometimes dream of the pink beaches of Bermuda. I wish I could go there. ❤️
@markmh8352 күн бұрын
My correction: I just learned that the Cayman Islands have surpassed Bermuda in population .
@cushsmith2623Күн бұрын
The pink beaches are misleading it's caused by the decomposition of a type of single celled organism that primarily lives on coral rocks and other marine shell life but, im guessing global warming is effecting are coral reefs which means less places for it to thrive to contribute to the pink hue as corals and rock break down into sand sediments

Shakespear's The Tempest was based on George Somer's shipwreck in Bermuda while on his way to relief the crumbling settlement of Jamestown. When I lived there (63-70) I recall the dress standards were quite strong. Bermuda Short's legs had to be four inches above the knee. At any of the beaches, bikinis were verboten and men had to wear boxer style bathers rather than what I would now refer to as budgie-smugglers. Happy days. Bermuda was covered in cedar trees until a bight wiped them out in the forties. These allowed for a strong ship building activity. The Spaniard, Juan de Bermudez released some pigs onto the island. This was common practice in case sailors were ever shipwrecked on any uninhabited islands. Feral descendants were running loose at the time of settlement by the Forty Thieves.

It would be a cool place to vacation for a month or three but it’s too small for me. I’d be very familiar with it in three days and have it memorized in a week. After that it would feel like a cage and the inability to leave quickly and easily would cause me to be irritated by every little thing that I’d hardly notice if I lived in NY or California.

The title of this video "What on Earth is Bermuda?" made me think the video would explain the geography and/or origin of the island of Bermuda, which is rather oddly placed in the middle of nowhere. I've always wondered if its origin was volcanic or something else, so I clicked on it. But one minute in, it appears this is going to be another in the endless series of videos on the utterly non-mysterious mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. Accordingly, I am out, I am downvoting the video (for dishonesty) and I am blocking the channel from appearing in my feed.
