Personally, I think 0 Yoshis died, because my headcanon is that when a Yoshi falls into a pit or goes off screen, he walks safely across a floor of spikes hidden beneath the level (since he can walk safely across spikes in Mario Maker) in order to get back to the start of the level (and then follows another secret path back into his starting position for when Mario respawns, if needed). Thus, Yoshi never really dies

Well it's shown in the Paper Mario games that characters in that universe really do have multiple lives and don't actually permanently die and go to the afterlife until they run out of lives and get a game over. So Yoshi can die and still be fine, he must have a lot of extra lives saved up since he's obviously not dead in the Mario canon.

*Fun fact:* In order for a Magikoopa to make the flagpole dissapear, his/her magic must hit the brown block on the bottom of the flagpole. If the magic hits the flagpole on a higher spot than the brown block, the flagpole won't dissapear. That's why, in the last level, the bottom of the flagpole was covered by munchers and there was a hidden Magikoopa there. Because, while noone is paying attention, the Magikoopa is suspiciously hiding the flagpole by hitting the bottom block with his/her magic.

on the last lv, when you start the map, the blocks are off letting the munchers and a hidden magician spawn, which kills the end before the spike balls reveal it. on way back, the blocks are on preventing said spawns.

Sorry this is late. I wanted to finish the video before commenting this. 24 out of 26 Yoshies died in that one level. Technically 25 because Dave waited at the end, but if you grab the goal fast enough you can save the last one. Technically none of them actually died because falling below screen only kills the player, thwomps, bullies, and bosses, everything else would respawn if it falls off screen and it's spawn point is reloaded. You can tell because that's how clear conditions and keys work.
