Gingernuts are biscuits/ cookies Into ginger tea Tim wrote the score & lyrics of the hit musical Matilda. He's is renowned in Australia for his dark comedy songs. Taking the N word & turning it to Ginger was genius. Australians traditionally called redheads "blue".

Great reaction, but I do think you missed a little bit - the letters in the word GINGER are the same letters as the word you were thinking of, so although the song is about ginger haired people, the sentiments expressed for the gingerphobes can be the same sentiments felt/expressed in the N-word (well known that in England especially you do get bullied for being ginger haired, eg here is an excerpt from an article online explaining where this came from - "It all started in the Middle Ages when witch-hunting manual, Malleus Maleficarum, warned that red hair and green eyes were marks of a witch"). Hope you don't mind the explanation, it's a great song and message from the brilliant Tim Minchin.

- As others have probably noted, he's not primarily talking about "gingers": he's still addressing the 'N word', but in a tangential way. - And, the switch is designed to point up the prejudice that most people assumed the 'N word". - Lastly, some references are Australian, so can be missed (like "gingernuts", which are cookies, or "biscuits", which get dunked into tea).

Fil, so stoked to see you discover Tim Minchin. While he is a brilliant comedian with an incredible wit his lyrical compositions are wonderfully complex. Tim is probably best known for his comedy songs, especially those which tend to skewer religious beliefs as an unabashed atheist. He is also a quite accomplished non-comedic singer/songwriter/composer having written the Tony Award winning musical 'Matilda' and the Tony nominated 'Ground Hog Day the Musical'. A few comedy suggestions would be 'Rock & Roll Nerd', 'Not Perfect', his 9 minute beat poem 'Storm', and his sentimental masterpiece 'White Wine in the Sun'. If you want to see his more serious side check out 'I'll Take Lonely Tonight' and 'The Absence of You'.

The history of using ginger as a slur is connected mainly with the UK and Australia where the 'ruling' class are English and the subjugated are Celts, Scottish, Irish and Welsh populations, wherein the recessive gene for red hair is significantly more common, so over here and down under ginger and other 'traits' associated with celticness tend to be used in a derogatory context (obvs not in anyway at the same level as ginger's anagram) In British ex-colonies/commonwealth with more influential/respected celtic populations the opposite is often true; so in the US, Canada and NZ having red hair is desirable and in most other parts of the world its pretty neutral if a little exotic.

Yey, you did it! Glad you liked him. And yes, the point of the song was to make fun of the fact that in today's world the obsession about some words (like phobia, as you well observed) has been brought to absurd, and anyone is entitled to claim special treatment for some reason that may or may not be based in reality. You can see he was really truly respectful of the N word usage (the one we all assumed as the one he meant, so... are we being prejudiced?), but he played with the fact that "a couple of Gs, an R and an E, an I and an N" do also spell GINGER. (Btw, ginger nuts are Australian tea cookies :D) For the next one of his songs, please consider Storm: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHq6m2aqfpJ3jsk It's a 9 minute beat poem as he calls it, also a brilliant comment on some modern world tendencies, but funny as hell

As others have noted, gingernuts are a very hard biscuit (cookie) which are much easier to eat if you dunk them into hot tea. Of course, Tim was absolutely aware of how this would be taken as a sexual entendre, thus emphasizing his point about knee-jerk reactions to how we use & interpret language. Tim is also an accomplished musician & lyricist who wrote the musical "Matilda": kzbin.info/www/bejne/bai7pJStmbCGbrM kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIqbY6qhqaZ4o7M

I really don't see how you can agree with a group of people deciding, all by themselves, that they are the only ones who get to use a word. Imagine if other people decided to claim a word for themselves and said that nobody else could use it. The use of a word isn't the issue and should not be the focus. It's racism that is the issue and should be the focus. The fact is, when a group of people say a word is theirs and that nobody else outside of their skin color can use it, that is racist, even if it's true that most other people who use that word are being racist. It is possible for a person outside of their skin color to use that word and not be racist about it. Bottom line is, people have the right to be offended, but they don't have the right to not be offended. Anyway, Tim is actually talking about Ginger people, and it points out exactly the problem with a group of people claiming a word and not letting other's use it and how silly it is to do that.

You don't understand why 'ginger' might be a derogatory term? Because you're not a ginger. Have you ever been called bloodnut? Have you ever been called tampon? While Tim is deliberately having fun, he's still making a point about the power of language, whether it's the word you initially assumed or any other words used to demean others.

I feel like alot of this was lost in translation. Gingernut is a type of biscuit in Australia that we dunk into cups of tea. And GINGER is the word he was spelling out, not the other word you were thinking. And in Australia we call red heads Ranga's. This is a light-hearted comedic pun song, don't read into it too much, it will ruin the humour.

Nothings changed. He's just using a creative approach to talk about the other word. "If I Didn't Have You" is great. The Pope Song, with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (but don't live stream that. It's a bit edgier and you might not want to be caught off guard). Dark Side. Lullaby. Woody Allen Jesus. I happen to love his Peace Anthem for Palestine, but it's a little brief for a reaction video. Just watch it for fun sometime.

Ginger is just swapped out for exactly what you were thinking in the first place...........BUT ginger discrimination is real. It is equated with Scottish folk - enemies of the English through a long and bloody history. The Scots mainly stayed Catholic when England under Henry VIII became Church of England so the Catholic / Protestant was part of it as well. In history redheads have been long put down. I am of Scottish descent and we have a saying that you always put the milk in your tea first or you'll have red-headed kids ............ my Grandfather's nickname was carrot top so no hope there - luckily my hair was dark auburn. But yes there is prejudice - just not as bad as that first thought of yours. Oh yes in Australia and the UK Gingernuts are are a hard biscuit/cookie that you dunk in tea....yum !

I don't think anyone shouldn't be able to say either of the words you mentioned Because it's all in the way it's done and delivered That's pretty much what he's pointing out That it can be humours or to inflicting pain depending on how it's used I don't think many people would agree it's OK to use to inflict pain But wouldn't think twice if used as a joke making it adhering way 🤔 The problem today people taking words literally where's a single word can have a multitude of meanings depending on how it's phrased This is what people have forgotten about language especially English My concern is people demanding tolerance But are generally the ones who show the least This is what free speech is about If you reactions to certain words causing you this much of issue you need to look at what other issues you have in life Because this only gives the words the power they don't it you giving it the power by how you react to it For instance I've always been fat and people have tried to use the word as power but I'd agree with them and make many own fat joke about myself Guess what happened no more fat jokes as I'd taken the power of the word away and the use to try an inflict pain People told me I shouldn't put myself down like that My reply is I am fat and that's a facts But I can remove the personal attack by taking the power of the word away by my reactions Bullying is a sign of issues the bully has in their life not mine and I'm going to move on and leave them behind while I'll be enjoy my life Words and bully's only have power if you let it Just move on and enjoy the world it's only a very small minority of people in the world so don't play to their ego by giving them power with words

It's not about gingerphobia - it's a parody, making a point about the "N" word without saying it. Sure, redheads do come in for their share of ragging, but you're getting too literal.
