The problem with Hogan is that he was just too old to be good for anything anymore. Between his ego and physical incapability he was just this prop people had to bump around. That said, Joker Sting is really underrated and it's a shame that a lot of people dismiss the whole thing as TNA just trying to run after a popular trend when Joker Sting actually did make total organic sense as a persona.

He was, however, a good in ring performer in terms of working the crowd and character work. Like look at the famous Hogan VS Warrior match from Mania 6. Yes, it's a terrible match technically, but the character work transcends everything and it does take a certain type of talent and skill to make it. Plus most of 80s wrestling is pretty boring, at least as the WWF is concerned and in that sense I'd rather watch any Hogan match over like... Greg the Hammer vs some other sweaty middle aged man from the territories.

Hogan killed TNA early on in his run, but it was a slow death. He moved them to Monday nights and killed their momentum stone dead in a vain attempt to get back at Vince McMahon. From there they never recovered that momentum and it was a steady downward slide. Towards the end you mention James Storm getting a title run during Hogan's time there, and while that's true, it had little to do with Hogan. It came later than it should've because Hogan said he "wasn't ready" to win the title, even though the crowd were reacting positively for him and were eager to see him win it. When it did come it meant way less than it should have.

Thinking about the comment Hogan waking out segment at the end of his run, and the comment about Dixie looking like a fool I would like to interject that Vince McMahon made himself look like a fool constantly. It’s one of the most endearing things about him as a performer. On the other hand the Authority has been criticized for never looking weak and always gaining the upper hand. As for why this feels like such a blow ( and this is from a guy who wasn’t watching impact at the time) I think it’s because Hogan was probably the biggest name the company had signed and he just walk out without getting them to the promise land. It didn’t matter if he was a face or heel, wrestling or not, he couldn’t do for impact what he had done for WCW, WWE, and even a little bit for the AWA. It says that IMPACT would always ride a niche market but never crossover mainstream and become the number one company in US wrestling. And what’s worst is that Hogan just leaves. He doesn’t get anyone over on the way out. He doesn’t put over the company as a whole. There isn’t even some big thank you celebration. he just leaves and it makes TNA look like some kind of failed experiment, or worst, one of countless promotions that sprang up and then died out.

I was there in Manchester for Hawks last match. He couldn’t lift his leg much for the big boot but it didn’t matter as I just wanted to see him in the ring. He did say that it would be his last match in the UK. Didn’t realise it would be his last match ever however.

TNA quenched my wrestling thirst throughout the aughts(2004-09), I've got dozens of their PPVs on DVD and there isn't one bad card among them, no time wasted, total nonstop action. Sure, there were the 'fire Russo' gimmick matches, but even those were done better than their WCW counterparts. But the thing is that TNA had something for everyone: high flying action with the X-Division, awesome performers like AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Jay Lethal, Abyss and (the criminally, and eternally underrated) Fallen Angel, a solid Tag-Team division, some legendary hardcore material (do yourself a favor and look up the hardcore match between Chris Harris and James Storm). It was an amazing time to be a fan of Sting and Kurt Angle, as they both shined. And Knockouts > Divas. Also, I loved the six-sided ring. Then came Hogan.

The 6 sided ring was one of the coolest things about TNA back in the day. It really made them stand out. Getting rid of it was dumb.
