I like release order for watching with someone for the first time. Otherwise, I like chronological order since I know the story already

This comment contains spoilers: . . . . . I'm a Machete Order fan. When he was asked how to fit Rogue One and the epilogue films in, I think he made a valid point. Start with the saga in Machete Order (IV V II III VI), watch the following numbered movies (VII VIII and IX after it comes out), then watch Episode I and the other non-numbered films. Episode I spoils too much of who the Emperor really is when watching it before his reveal, so without it inserted in you get an additional surprise twist. Also, something else to note about Machete Order. A major reason for it was that camera shot at the end that George Lucas altered with the special editions. There was someone who showed Star Wars to his wife for the first time in Machete Order, and when Hayden Christensen appeared in Episode VI, she smiled. Fans have come to dislike that alteration, but Machete Order makes it a positive. Not that anyone pays attention to the credits and details about the incidental music, but the incidental music feels made for Machete Order. Episode IV gives basic themes, but doesn't include "The Imperial March." Episode V gives it a grand debut, and it premieres Yoda's theme with Yoda. Episode II plays it at the end, hinting that this is the beginning of the Empire, which only makes sense when you know about the future Empire, and it also lacks Yoda's theme. Episode III brings Yoda's theme in shortly before he decides to go into exile. Episode VI includes the themes and stuff now known. With Episode I, Anakin's theme has hints of "The Imperial March" and the very last seconds of the closing credits have Darth Vader's breathing, meaning that you're supposed to know who Anakin Skywalker will become.

I like the points both of you made: "If it's not broken, don't fix it." When our family watched Star Wars with the kids the first time, we showed them the order in which we saw it ourselves as kids for nostalgia's sake. But I also like Dave's points too. I think my kids in particular liked the Phantom Menace because they got to see other little kids and see how Darth Vader grew up. However, when my youngest was 4 and watching A New Hope for the first time, he said, "How long is this going to take?" Heh. They are huge fans now, and we can't wait for The Last Jedi!

I do like your modified machete order. My viewing order would be as follows: if someone wants to get into the franchise and wants to see what it's all about, release order. If someone already knows the big reveals of the original and wants to see how the story naturally progresses, episodic order. For me personally, I do episodic order if I'm sitting down for a full marathon as I will in the days leading up to The Last Jedi. I agree with the idea that for a teenager right now you might want to show them Rogue One first since it has the highest production value (imo) and is pretty fast paced and action packed. It really does a tremendous job at the end with the blend into A New Hope.

I wouldn't show a newbie Rogue One at all. It's not a saga movie and can be watched as "additional material" in their own time. Otherwise the machete order is fine.

One time I did PRODUCTION ORDER. And putting "Rogue One" at the end seemed to really work. It was good to start with the obviously dated 4,5, and 6. Then go through the less (at least for now) dated looking 1,2, and 3. And then finish off with the very recent 'Rogue One."

When do you watch the holiday special in this? Btw I watched the movies (that I watched) in the order 1,4,5,6, holiday special, 7.

There are 3 legitimate orders. (1,2,3,4,,5,6), (4,5,6,1,2,3), and (4,5,1,2,3,6). Though an interesting alternative I read about is to start with 4 after the Republic is gone. Then flash back to 1 and see the Republic in power. Then 2 and see the war starting. Then flash forward to 5 and see the war in its full swing and get the big twist. Then flash back to 3 and see the explaining of the big twist. Then flash forward and finish with 6. (4,1,2,5,3,6).

No problem. :) That guy does have an interesting order. The one thing I would add to it is to watch "Rogue One" between 3 and 6. This way you can see Darth Vader at his most powerful, now that you've seen exactly who he is and what created him.

@@eternalhalloween1 That feels pretty cool, but it also feels a little confusing. With Release Order, you get one big flashback. With Machete Order, you get a nice brief flashback. Next time I have a full day free and want to do a marathon, I might try it.

Obviously, it's not one of the 3 official orders. (4,1,2,5,3,6) But looking at it, I had to admit the guy's reasoning was rather interesting. Hey, it never hurts to try something once.

I think I would do it 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, rogue one, the force awakens, and the last Jedi just for that awesome ending scene in rogue one and to see how anakin goes bad knowing he becomes Darth Vader. What do you thin RR and others?

I like the rebel rave machete order but I would still show the movies in theatrical order and make sure they are the unaltered versions of the original trilogy because not only are they better but Jaba’s mystery in Episode 4 & 5 is ruined in the special edition with the unnecessary deleted scene that was added in Episode 4.
