I used craptastic rollers for years. Bought one of those green Wooster rollers as I started to learn more (along with expensive paints and Wooster brushes). Holy smokes. No more hopping and skipping on the walls. Much more uniform coverage, much faster, much more fun!

I prefer a roller tray. It's more open, and there's something about being able to load up in a natural sweeping motion rather than a digging motion. Sure you can step on it, but you can trip over a bucket too.

I use roller trays for small jobs, like painting a door, but for big jobs that require a lot of paint, I advocate the 5-gallon bucket with a roller grid. One problem I've always had with roller trays is that they don't "grip" the roller as well when you are trying to even out the paint on the roller. A grid does a much better job. But if you're more comfortable with a tray, then that's what you should use. Thanks for commenting.
