I've only painted the rookie way (a pan and a ton of tape). I'm on the 2nd coat in my baby's room and it's taking me forever. I decided to put my male ego aside and look up some tips. This is a HUGE help. I constantly had to refill the paint can, and I taped up the edges at the top of the room (when doing the ceiling), then taped up the ceiling when doing the top edges. This is a huge relief and time saver. Thanks man. Very informative and understandable. Keep up what you do!

As others have noted - your videos are the best I have seen - from the picture of the paint brush...holding the brush, directions of stokes, working in sections etc, lay on lay off etc....In the past I have used some of those techniques but not consistently. ...The best thing was the tip about what sound I should hear...because yesterday, I asked myself that exact question....now I know!!!! .....Hopefully I can correct the lap marks I have on my ceiling .... and then I'll move on to the walls with a lot more confidence.... If you haven't ..please consider doing video on removing popcorn .....with suggestions on how to finish the ceilings? Since I decided not to use the spray/hopper method, I watched ALOT of you tube videos using compound and trowel. I found it interesting that only one professional manually applied texture to an actual ceiling. They chose slanted ceilings and/or walls. Not one demonstrated how to hold the trowel, mixing different consistencies of "mud" and the varying results of each. .............However, through trial and error I am pleased with the result.

Hi--at 9:14 I am "scoring" the edge where the tape meets the wall to help it lift off there better. I'm using a 1-inch putty knife. It helps the tape lift off better, but you can usually still expect to do some "picking" to get all the tape off. (The putty knife can also help with that.) The problems you're having are common--sometimes you just need to go back and touch up a few spots. Pulling the tape when the paint is still barely tacky can help alleviate this, but the putty knife helps too.

Hi--I've never used a roller attachment on my sprayer. They look cool and it could save some time if you have a lot of square footage to cover. It wouldn't prevent you from having to cut in, though, and that's what takes a lot of time. If the house is new construction at the drywall stage, spraying and back-rolling would be the way to go. Another option to consider if you have a lot of ground to cover is using an 18-inch roller. Ask at the paint store about that. Good luck with the job!
@veshapidze10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great videos, John. Wonder if you could answer a couple of questions. 1. You've mentioned same color painting of walls and ceiling. Any tips as to type of paint finish? e.g. if chosen eggshell for vertical walls, should ceiling be same color but matte finish? 2. If you had to install hardwood in place of existing carpet, and paint walls, ceiling and trim, in which order would you do it? I'm thinking: 1. remove carpets and all the carpet railings, staples and padding. 2. Clean floors. 3. Patching 4. Paint ceiling 5. Paint walls 6. Paint trim, 7. Lay down hardwood liner 8. Install hardwood.
@howtopaintahouse10 жыл бұрын
!) Hi David. In answer to your first question, I personally like to use eggshell finish on all walls and ceilings, EXCEPT when it is a surface that will get damp or wet, such as a kitchen or bathroom, in which case I usually use semi-gloss. You can use matte on ceilings--lots of people do--but it is really hard to clean any type of smudge off matte finish without marring it. So say you squish a moth on the ceiling and there's a dirt spot--it will require touch-up with paint rather than a simple cleaning with a damp rag. Eggshell will clean up better. This is kind of a matter of personal preference. Matte can help to hide imperfections in a ceiling, so if that's an issue then matte might make sense. On trim I usually use a semi-gloss finish. 2) I think your order of tasks on the painting/hardwood job sounds fine, but if you have baseboard trim, you will need to remove it to install the hardwood, then put it back up and paint it last. In that case make sure you use blue tape to seal off the hardwood so the paint doesn't leak onto it, and when you are done, use a damp rag wrapped around the blade of a putty knife to gently clean any paint that leaked onto the hardwood (it usually cleans off pretty easily if you don't let it sit for weeks). And remember NOT to caulk the joint between the bottom of the baseboard and the hardwood. I believe I mention that in the video Step 4: Painting the Trim. It looks much better if left as a natural joint. However, you do want to caulk the joint where the baseboard meets the wall, and since you will have already painted the wall, you'll want to caulk very carefully and possibly do a little touch up with wall paint down there when you are done. Not a big deal. Another option would be to simply do the hardwood installation, then do a VERY good job of taping it and cover it with good canvas drop cloths...so it's not entirely necessary to do the floor after the paint job, if it works better for your schedule to do the hardwood floor first. Just make sure to cover it completely when painting. Good luck!

good video just one correction boxing paint is a mixing technique where a pail/bucket of paint is poured back and forth between pails/buckets multiple times to help the pigments blend it was a process that was used before the advent of mixing machines and is still used in places without access to an agitator.
@gianthillsАй бұрын
i used to do it like that, but if you apply less pressure, you can guide just a few bristles right into the corner with a light touch and you'll get a sharp line all the way along, not one that goes in and out of the corner.

John, if someone unskilled in painting is needing to paint ceiling and wall once the ceiling is dry would you recommend painters tap to get that fine edge where the ceiling meets the wall? Maybe it's easier than it looks, but I doubt I could get that nice clean edge, as I don't have the experience.
@howtopaintahouse10 жыл бұрын
Hi--I just don't think tape works very well on the ceiling...it does not stick well, and usually the paint bleeds underneath and creates a ragged edge. If you follow my technique in the video and just carry the paint a hair up onto the ceiling (1/32 inch), it looks straight from out in the room. It's really not hard, try it! Tape is a last resort on the ceiling as far as I'm concerned. Others might have a different opinion.

In response to Teddy AGP: "I used spackle to fill hole in my cement wall. Sand them. And prime the entire wall. After painting I could see difference in sheen in repaired area." When you patch, you need to prime with the cheap primer (PVA) that is intended for bare drywall (and patches). Patches and drywall absorb the primer. I inherited a wall with about 30 patches from where previous owners removed an entertainment center and made HUGE patches. After I primed them all with the PVA primer, I primed the entire wall with latex primer. The results were good. You don't see the changes in sheen. Yay! I am not sure what would happen if you skipped the latex primer and just went straight to paint. A general contractor gave me this tip. :)

You paint custom colors one wall at a time, because you want a wet edge to roll into or it will lap. And no you don't double roll it. And only brush down enough for the roller to catch. Trim first also.

Can't fault that. Nice job. Cut in twice, unlike some lazy painters. Laid off vertically under the window though the tempation is to work horizontally. Only thing I'd do differently is to face the open end of the roller towards the right, i.e. towards where you've just painted. Open end of the roller tends to leave less of a line when you're rolling back into the work, which is better when you're laying off especially.
