I've been using cheaper paper that I already had on hand to practice but thanks to your teaching, I think it's time to stop fighting with it and get good paper so I can learn properly. I like your idea to use both sides for practice. Thanks for your great demo and teaching. Very useful.

Blocks are great and very handy for travel. They are mostly 140 lb. but gummed on the edges which helps the page to dry flat. A bit more expensive but most people find it is worth the convenience. I go through so much paper I needed to find the most economical solution that suited my needs so I ended up using 200 lb. loose sheets.

I have usually used 140lb paper and balked at 300lb because of the cost but now, thanks to this video I have started to use 200lbs and it is great. Thanks very much.

Thanks for sharing all your tutorials. I just started watercolors about a year ago. Your videos have helped me a lot and made me a better amateur artist.... just ask my mom lol. I’m 55 years old and wish I would’ve started this years ago. Thanks again, and I hope you are well.

One comment you made about the paper...don't use a poor grade to practice. I have been struggling with watercolor for some time as I am a detail artist. Fiddling with watercolor on poor paper is just another delay in learning. I have since started using nothing less than 140lb when absolutely just practicing. I love 300lb though quite expensive, but my technique has gotten better.

Are you just using masking tape? I love your video tutorials! So many of the tutorials are time lapsed and practically useless except to admire the artist's work. I can admire yours AND learn. So helpful. Thank you, Grant.

+Stalean I just tape the paper to a panel (corrugated plastic because it is so light and travels well) with masking tape. I am also not a fan of speed painting videos, they get lots of hits because of the amusement but teach nothing.

This really showed soft vs. hard edges. It surprised me when you showed the reflections of trees on the island before you painted the trees but it made sense. Lovely overall.

Answer is more simple.You use the paper, that suits your brand of watercolor paint,the kind of painting you do and in some cases,what your budget allows too. Those 3, in that order,are the factors,that will lead you to the proper paper. Every brand, works differently,because of the nature of watercolour. Rembrandt for example, are very vibrant and move a lot and in random ways,so you need a paper like Saunders Waterford, or Fabriano Artistico mould made sheets. That's just an example, for the 1st factor I mentioned.

Did you say what brand of paper you're using? Sorry if I missed it. Also, around here the choices are 90 lb, 140 and 300. No 200 lb. to be had.

Not sure but normal water just to blend the colours to natural lightest shade to give impressionist landscape. And ofcourse he is not using primer as that is heavier so definitely water as I too do it lot of times.

my questions: if the board is not varnished, won’t it warp? And, are the two plastic boards foam board? And if so, when wet, do they not fall apart? And will the work on 200 lb. paper dry easily, even though you are using the foam board (if it is foam board) which has a plastic like finish?

Would you say it's best to just go straight onto artist grade paper? Instead of trying to fight with student grade papers?
@grantwfuller8 жыл бұрын
Yes! practicing on bad paper only teaches us how bad paper behaves. Best to start with good paper and cut it up and paint on both sides.
