The hardest thing about learning korean was definitely the sentence structure and grammar for me because it's so different from the English grammar system.

For me, memorizing and forming sentences/speak was the problem. As soon as I memorize a grammar rule or a word and review it every once in a while it sticks. But certain things would just never stick. As if they had legs "Oh I'll stay here for a day or two then leave byeee." But when it comes to understanding, as long as I am familiar with the words I somehow manage to de-scramble them, it just takes a minuet for my slow processed brain to process xD And well... speaking I suck because I have brain farts VERY often when trying to form sentences ;( And luckily I watched a load of Korean dramas so I don't often have too much trouble with pronouncing ;) so glad at least my brain is capable of mimicking people lol

*매직쇼 * 근데 "~언어는 어렵다"라는 문장 자체가 성립이 안되는게 언어가 어렵고 쉬운건 상대적인 개념임다. 예를들어 미국인은 한국어를 배울때 어렵고 헷갈려하지만 일본인은 비교적 수월하게 배우는것을 볼 수 있슴다.

Hahahaha... I learned the Korean alphabet twice in the same year still can't remember anything lol ;( I always have these brain fart moments when one of my friends say something like "Oh, you're learning Korean right? How to you say ______? I'm just like ummmmmm can't remember sorry. It's hard for me to understand and memorize things too. I always reconize words and get frustrated because I can't remember what exactly they mean.

Definitely, 쓰기! it was okay making sentences when I first learned the language at the 언어교육관 but writing an essay... that's like 쓰기, 문법, 어휘 kicking your ass at the same time. ㅠㅠ 읽기,말하기,듣기 are sweet, hahaha. The good thing is that Korean grammar and Japanese grammar is almost the same, that helps a lot... but still hating essay, reports, and so on. (^-^;) P.S: I'm planning to take more Korean classes even though I don't really need it. P.S1: 영상 너무 재밌어요! 잘 보고 간다~~ 파이팅 (^-^) P.S2: struggles of a 외국인 대학생~

One thing that wasn't mentioned, but that is one that I have struggled with in the past, is that when you're texting with a Korean native speaker they sometimes don't pay a lot of attention to their spacing (띄어쓰기).. This can be really confusing when you're still a beginner because you probably won't know enough Korean to be able to always tell where one word ends and another one begins.
@oneear
@oneear 8 жыл бұрын
Trust me. most of Koreans don't know where needs space(띄어쓰기) things exactly.

I just spent a month in Korea and honestly I don't feel like I was able to learn much other than really basic terms. I can read hangul and understand the basic gist of what people are saying, but cannot speak much myself or say full sentences. My main issue with trying to learn, specifically since I'm not being taught in a course, is that no one really helped or let me try to speak in korean as most koreans will always speak english to me, or if I do attempt they will get caught up in that I just spoke korean and won't continue the conversation. Like it's too amusing that that then becomes the point of conversation. It's frustrating ㅠㅠ

for english native speaker, korean is hard. but then again, the best way to learn korean or any other foreign languages is by communicating with others. Live in that place, find some friends from that country or use an italki. if u spend too much on grammar, then u will have a lot of a hard time. u can watch how dave (the famous american youtubers) with his friends from different countries speak fluent Korean by staying in korea. and there is also one of his videos about korean have full score on english exam paper but cant even speak normally in english due to lack of communication. u can watch it here :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYmWgYBoatWlZsk

Sentence structure. ITS SO HARD! You have to make sure you use the right particles,then sometimes koreans dont use particles in their sentences so you have to know when and how to use the particles correctly. Also,conjugation. When doing that in korean you conjugate based on the sentence and what you're talking about its just ugh. I love learning korean but sometimes im just like forget this. LOL I havent given up tho!

This is really great, when you asked how Korean sounded to you when you first heard it, I remember thinking that I had heard other languages before but my first time hearing Korean I thought it much more sounded soft and sensual like French. I speak French and Spanish (not that well- native English believe it or not!) and hearing Korean reminded me of the softness you mentioned! I have a question for you, what is the meaning of the 'midah' and 'endae' I hear a lot at the end of sentences? (So very sorry for the bad romanization of these but I tried to spell phonetically to my ear) 🎢

I'm having a hard time with double consonants, gammar, and sentence structure lol but then again I just started learning. I was able to pick up the alphabet super quick and recognize them but putting them together without using the romanized version is still a bit hard lol

I'm learning the alphabet now. I have been able to spell some things by ear, and I can write out names and stuff sometimes. Occasionally I'll see a word and think, "Oh, I know that!" But, pronunciation is definitely harder than just learning the alphabet. Especially ㄹ, it's so hard to make my mouth form that sound.
@nsn18never
@nsn18never 8 жыл бұрын
Amanda Howard Agreed! English is my mother language and we don't have the ㄹ or 어 sounds in our alphabet. I learned how to pronounce 어 pretty well but I'm still having a really hard time learning how to do ㄹ haha. I even tried different tongue positions. I don't know how to roll my r's either so that doesn't help at all... I know this comment was two months ago but I hope you figured it out! If you did, I'd love a tip~
@GothMsFrizzle
@GothMsFrizzle 8 жыл бұрын
I can roll my r's, but it requires a bit more than that. I've gotten to where I can say it within words, but it's hard for me when the sound is closer to the end for some reason. How I practice is by placing my tongue in position to say an L, and then sort of rolling into the position to make the r sound. I don't know if that makes sense, or if I'm explaining it right. So, like, the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth, and then ending with from the back of your tongue touching the of the roof of your mouth. It's a combination of both sounds. Make the R and L sounds and pay attention to the position your mouth is in. I hope that helps!
@nsn18never
@nsn18never 8 жыл бұрын
Amanda Howard I think I know what you mean haha! Thank you so much though, I'm still practicing by repeating words I hear with the ㄹ sound and trying to match myself with it, it's still hard for me but I'll get there :)

I gave up trying to learn Korean simply because I never get to use it. I still watch dramas with the subtitles because I just don't know enough words to understand all the conversation. I think it's harder too because "formal" speech often sounds very different from less formal speech and banmal. Could I get by in Korea with what I already know. Sure? I know a lot of common words and phrases but to understand what everyone is saying all the time would be very difficult without living there and having constant exposure. My friend's daughter is into Kpop and she texted me yesterday and asked if I knew of a good website or youtube channel to learn Korean. There are lots of them but if you don't have someone to converse with it's difficult to become fluent.

I still can't get how to use right 은/는 -이/가 . I mean i read about it and when i say, oh yes! i got it! , when it's time to speak korean n use it, i feel i do it completely wrong. Another thing! when i first first started learning korean, seriously, i couldn't understand the structure of the sentence Koreans use and how everything is a verb!!!! that was my nightmare. In western we say " there are many people "," you are pretty" etc BUT in korean everything it's just a verb! 많아요, 예뻐요~ Seriously at first that was not making sense to me. Of course now it's fine! :) but i spent a lot of days crying n thinking that I'm stupid since i don't understand ^^ ( also sometimes even now feels weird that in korean we don't use specifically "he,she, it,you,they"... and that words are connected without space. But! korean n greek have things in common!! many expressions are same as in greek. also the word "yes" is same in my language! ^^ we say "ne" ^^ )

I think formal would be the hardest. the only time I had to be formal was when I was working at 뇌교육. I had to study 한국능력 대비.To me 지키다 and 보호하다 are different meaning but depending on how you use it. They have same meaning. I wasn't used to formal speaking or writing. Listening I am good. Me and my mom we speak like we are best friends to each other. and I never had Korean friends here in the states. that why I learned Chinese all my friends are Chinese. Even at our Korean church the kids were sent to English mass while parents were at Korean mass. I only saw Korean people at church or if we went to our mini Korean town to have crappy Korean food. mom doesn't like to cook anymore ㅠ_ㅠ I want some 돼지국밥 앤드 감자탕

Hangul was so easy for me but I just learn like a child I just listen to what people say and how to say it and repeat it and figure out the situation in which to use it I try to immerse myself in it I ask Koreans I watch Korean TV and just study as hard as I can.

The great impedement to translate Korean literatures is about vulgars that mills out every day and night. In fact, the script inventors even named Korean spoken language as "Eon Mun" or similiarly in English as vernacular. This vernacular was not the main stream language but a supportative one to inteprete Han literatures. Virtually I am unable to ruminate all the vulgars and slangs that are adopted in Korean daily life today. Often I feel Korean language was born to express dirty jokes and I never saw any languages are such.
