And if one tenth of that CO2 was instead carbon monoxide we would all be dead within minutes. Even concentrations as low as 0.0001% of CO are fatal if you are exposed for an extended amount of time. Funny how such a small amount of gas can be something to worry about... But this congressman doesn't even understand the difference between seasons and climate, so I wouldn't expect him to grasp such an unintuitive concept as "trace gasses in the atmosphere can reflect infrared radiation" Edit to say: Just realized I forgot to move the decimal in my conversion of PPM to %. It's actually 0.01% of atmospheric CO that would be lethal to humans. My point still stands however. Trace amounts of gasses can't be written off as "harmless and irrelevant" simply because of their low percentage.

@@takanara7 Not even close. The word "most" doesn't apply when it's 8% of the population, most of whom have been largely brainwashed. If an actual vote by the people happened, and it included real information and properly set expectations, your side would never win that vote. Fossil fuels are literally life-saving to an enormous percentage of the population, and were being harvested in a way that resulted in a net-zero carbon contributing footprint under Donald Trump. The use of fossil fuels means less deforestation as people no longer need wood for energy. It means carbon emissions that function as plant-food. It means lower cost for everyone, and there are at least 300 years worth of deposits for the entire world on US soil alone. You don't think in that time a better or more "sustainable" energy production method could be developed? Stop taking the bait. There is nothing in place for a renewable source that will help the planet or the people who inhabit it, and it would kill millions to try and transition quickly.

I work in the cement production industry for the worlds largest cement corporation, and took part in a European works council 2 or 3 years ago when these issues were first being pushed hard. Senior management at a global level were involved in the discussions, and it was clear that they were very concerned about the implications to the business, due to the high levels of CO2 that our industry produces. The fact that cement is absolutely necessary to build houses etc that will last decades is not taken into account either. Very simple. The orbit of the planet and it's proximity to the sun and the tilt of the earth are what typically cause the climate to change and it takes THOUSANDS OF YEARS. What is happening now has only taken about 150 years. And, the CO2 levels naturally LAG the increase in the earths surface temperatures due to being released by thawing permafrost. This time, CO2 levels are LEADING climate change. Once it gets warm enough to release the stored CO2 in permafrost we are really going to be screwed. That is starting to happen now.

Already starting to happening in California. EVs are straining the grid, so the State has been strongly recommending that people charge their vehicles in off-peak hours, during the middle of the night. @@Cohen.the.Worrier The plants are a system equalizer. More CO2 leads to larger, more robust plants. Plants are CO2 sinks. When people grow plants in grow tents/greenhouses, sometimes to get more robust growth - to maximize plant growth - they will inject CO2 into the atmosphere. Higher concentrations of CO2 combined with higher temperatures exacerbates plant growth. I would love for somebody to point out the flaw in my assertion and its implied effects. I think climate change is a political catchphrase. It is a lever of control far more than it is a threat to a planet if CO2 is the measure.
