Post this Canadian Leaders Sound Alarm Over U.S. Tariff Threats, Avoid Border Security Debate Ottawa, Canada - Canadian officials and provincial premiers are stupidly reacting with outrage to incoming U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports if elected. While the potential economic fallout has dominated headlines and government responses, a GLARING OMMISION in the national conversation is any discussion about addressing the underlying U.S. concerns that prompted the tariff threats, such as border security and drug trafficking. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and several provincial leaders have issued strongly worded statements decrying the proposed tariffs, labeling them an attack on Canadian sovereignty and the country’s economy. “Canada will not stand idly by while our workers and industries are targeted unfairly,” Trudeau said. Despite the heated rhetoric, neither the federal government nor provincial officials have outlined any steps Canada might take to address U.S. concerns about lax border security or measures to counter drug trafficking-issues Trump has tied directly to the tariffs. Fiery Rhetoric, No Solutions Ontario Premier Doug Ford called the tariffs “an outrageous economic weapon,” urging Canadian unity to resist the U.S. “bullying tactics.” Similarly, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith proposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, stating, “We need to show the U.S. we mean business.” However, critics argue that such responses miss the point. “What’s conspicuously absent is any acknowledgment of the issues the U.S. claims to be addressing with these tariffs,” said Toronto-based trade analyst Mark Halperin. “If Canada wants to de-escalate, we need to demonstrate we’re taking their concerns seriously, not just doubling down on retaliatory measures.” Media Echo Chamber The Canadian press has largely mirrored the government’s approach, with extensive coverage of potential economic impacts and retaliatory strategies but little discussion of what Canada could do to strengthen border controls or reduce fentanyl trafficking, a primary U.S. grievance. Instead, media narratives focus on framing the tariffs as an unjust economic assault rather than a call for bilateral action on shared challenges. “By framing the situation solely as a trade dispute, Canada risks missing an opportunity to address real issues at the border,” said Halperin. While provinces have suggested retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products such as agricultural goods and manufactured items, such measures could escalate the trade conflict and deepen economic pain for both countries. Missed Opportunity for Diplomacy Observers warn that Canada’s response, which appears to focus entirely on resisting the tariffs, is fueling tensions rather than addressing them. “It’s one thing to defend Canadian industries; it’s another to ignore the broader issues driving the conflict,” said Halperin. “Without meaningful action to address border security and drug trafficking, this dispute will only escalate.” The Road Ahead As the U.S. threat of tariffs looms, Canadian officials remain steadfast in their opposition but unwilling to engage on the underlying issues. With no diplomatic overtures or policy proposals on the table, the current approach risks deepening the divide between the two nations. For now, Canada’s leaders are locked in a cycle of condemnation and retaliation, leaving businesses and citizens bracing for economic turbulence-and wondering when, if ever, the real issues will be addressed. AS USUAL!

As a Canadian, I’m embarrassed to admit that I was initially excited about the idea of becoming the 51st state, given how unrecognizable our country feels. However, after some reflection, I agree with PP-we can fix things ourselves, as long as we “stop being stupid” and prioritize Canada’s economic well-being. Helping other countries is important, but it should only happen when we are in a strong position to do so without compromising our own stability and prosperity. It’s time to focus on rebuilding a sustainable future for Canadians first.

I recently came across a saying that really resonated with me: "We often don't realize what we have until it's gone." It made me reflect deeply, and I found myself thinking the same way you did. After feeling hopeless in Canada for the past decade, I thought I had lost all my hope. But now, the only glimmer of hope I have left is the potential for positive change with PP. I’ve often imagined what it would be like if Canada became a state or multiple states, and part of me always thought it could be a great idea. But then, I realized that this would mean giving up so many things we take for granted-the freedoms, values, and lifestyle that are truly core to who we are. This reflection has opened my eyes to the undeniable beauty of our country, despite the tough years we’ve endured. Canada has so much to offer, and the challenges we've faced have only made me appreciate what we have even more. There is still hope, and there is always the potential for a brighter future right where we are.

Trump is not as unreasonable as the headlines would lead you to believe. His rhetoric forced Trudeau out of the way, but I have no doubt that a deal will be made with his replacement.
@mmendes184412 күн бұрын
On the contrary, Trump potentially damaged/destroyed the reputation of the US in the worldview. Little is understood about Canada/Canadians to think any self-respecting country would want a convicted felon and sex offender as their leader. Trump receives kudos and credits himself for being a "master negotiator" but "those who’ve actually dealt with him beg to differ." And, it was later reported that when Trudeau countered the suggestion to become the 51st state by suggesting Canada annex other states, Trump stopped laughing. If anyone believes the president-elect is going to put anyone but himself first let alone care about the US economy ... let's see, though I would not plan on the cost of eggs coming down any time soon. Trudeau has stepped down now, but in my view, he deserves thanks for the solid stewardship that left Canada in decent shape through the pandemic. Another thing the president-elect may not have considered ... in terms of US politics, Canada is a largely blue state. Perhaps someone should consider subsidizing a new brain for the president-elect. 😀

the most important take for me here was PP saying that donald likes to win in negotiating - but he is not against his adversary also winning. this is KEY to intelligent negotiating. the one thing i wish PP did was to see trump in mar a lago before trump is sworn in.

Yep. Trump's a businessman and a negotiator. So negotiate. Despite stereotypes, most businessman, if they expect to deal with someone repeatedly, aren't interested in screwing over their "opponent", if they can both get a deal they are satisfied with. If he purposely screws over Canada, in the end, it will likely be bad for the US too. We're too intertwined. But he'll throw out a few threats, like tariffs, if he can't get what he wants, kind of like the carrot and the stick. He initially mentioned tariffs, while complaining about poor security at the CAN/US border. So offer a plan for better border security. If he can get a good deal, no stick needed.

@jelly-johnbobster2283-- The current Canadian Trudeau Liberal government is dilly-dallying in replacing Trudeau as leader Once that is done, then an election will happen - latest Oct. 2025. We are hoping before then so we can elect Pierre Poilievre as Prime Minister of Canada, a leader that we will not be embarrassed about and one who will work well with President Trump building a strong relationship between USA and Canada.

@@joeyjusta-foul-o3305 Where have you been? Under a rock? Trudeau is not just being cycled out because his time is up. He is being forced off the political stage because he is a doctrinaire woke, politically correct, climate extremist and feminist who is completely opposed to the economic common sense Canadians demand from their leaders. Everyone is going broke because of his belief system that costs everyone else an arm and a leg while he and his Liberal elites feel none of the pain because they have burrowed their snouts so deep into the government coffers they think the gravy train will go on forever for them.
