As a Puerto Rican from Brooklyn who knows gentrification first hand and frequents Puerto Rico annually for a solid portion of the year (my whole life), I feel gringos WILL NOT move to Puerto Rico TO ASSIMILATE to the Puerto Rican people and culture. SOME American Gringos might assimilate, but not the majority. Obtaining property in Rincon, VSJ, Dorado is NOT the same thing as assimilating or becoming 1 w the culture. How does one even do that? For example, there are white Rastafarians singing Roots Reggae in Jamaica, i'm sure many Jamaicans enjoy their presence, but could you imagine if white rastas became the majority of that scene? Now apply that paralell to Puerto Rico's "everything". No amount of interviews will change this perception, the Gringo mainland persona & lifestyle leaves a dominant trail where ever they go. Mexico City 2023's young gringo gentrifier presence is quite large for example. Some gringos may assimilate, but there way of living will not be imposed especially when they have the financial advantage of many of our own. Pay attention Boriquas reading this to the patterns in the Lower East Side, Williamsburg and Bushwick. Were we born to be erased? The erasure is never ending. I am a full blooded Puerto Rican who was born and raised in the States and now lives in Guaynabo. I cannot relate to the Puerto Rican culture in any setting because all the jokes, references, and music that I like are all from and for American culture. So, it is only natural for me to go through a lot of struggles for the past two years that I have been living in Guaynabo, P.R. What crushes my feelings the most is how the term Gringo is used to describe people of American culture, regardless of being Puerto Rican ethnicity. Furthermore, I have never felt like I was receiving a compliment when being called a Gringo. It's like calling someone a spic or a wet back. The worst thing I experience is how much crap people talk about you when they think you can't understand them. And that happens so often with me at my job that it gives me a hard time. My aunt said I would have a hard time here in Puerto Rico because of how resentful people are of Gringos. My mother is fluent in puerto rican and American and she describes the phenomenon she encountered moving to puerto rico when she was a child as a culture shock. What was inappropriate in P.R. is not in the US. Puerto Rico is not at all like the suburban parts of the US. And the people that inhabit the island are pretty racist for all agreeing to call Americans Gringo. What did I ever do to deserve to be called outside my name. And such an ugly word at that. It even literally has go away built into it.

I am from Williamsburg Brooklyn New York. I lived in the Williamsburg Housing Projects. I was drafted for military service and returned back home. I bought an apartment building in Williamsburg. I saw the handwriting on the wall about the coming GENTRIFICATION of Williamsburg and especially on the South side (Los Surdes). I moved to Puerto Rico and bought a farm here. When I drive to Aguadilla and pass through Ricon I see the GENTRIFICATION AGAIN. I even see it in Old San Juan. They have illegally privatized the beaches. I was stationed here before Isabella had any high rise apartments. I could walk down the streets and everyone had a piece of land where they grew food, and fruits. The Sugar Cane was massive. People were selling Sugar cane on the side of the road. But even that gone. From the commercials and the internet, I personally feel that Puerto Rico is being invaded. Look at what is happening in Jamaica! The Jamaican people cannot get access to the beaches. They are a fishing nation and they cannot even fish. Now as I write this c,two British BILLIONAIRE Brothers are planning to come to Puerto Rico and "invest" in real estate here. Unfortunately Puerto Rico will become another Hawaii. Especially when it becomes a state. It will be too expensive to live here.

I'm a gringo here currently. I'm here for work (blue collar). I don't get out much since we're working 12 hr shifts. However, from what I have seen, it's a beautiful island with great and proud people, as they should be. A few more weeks, and maybe I'll be headed home.

In Puerto Rico we love outsiders, the problems are with the laws that help foreigners or people from the mainland who usually have more money to start buying a lot of properties and space with less restrictions and cheaper than the locals could. This is because of some laws that are in place, which are very pro-mainland (middle to high income US earners) to promote outside investment at the expense of the locals who on average make 13k to 18k a year; locals can’t compete.

I don't have any hate towards Non-Puerto Ricans who come to visit the island or if they want to move here because they love the culture and want to be a part of it. The gringos I do have a problem with are the ones who promote and move to the island just to evade taxes and profit off exploiting our island. They come and buy up entire neighborhoods, historical sites, and public lands, and turn them into their own private resorts for wealthy Non-Puerto Rican tourists and raising the cost of living. It's causing massive gentrification and displacing real Puerto Ricans from their homes and some Puerto Ricans have had to leave the island. They are trying to turn Puerto Rico into Hawaii 2.0. This is a part of the corrupt statehood party PNPs plan, they believe that if more Non-Puerto Ricans gringos move to the island, that that'll some how promote statehood. The governor himself Pedro Pierluisi even talks about using the tax incentives ACT60 for leverage to push for statehood. When the US government asked him to have them taken down, he said "If they want them brought down they need to make Puerto Rico a state" he also said "My stance has always been that statehood for Puerto Rico is the best option and until then the law is to attract population and new investment". And back in 2019 in some of the messages in Ricardo Rossello ex corrupt governor that was forced from office, in his group chat with some of the people in his administration they talk about Puerto Rico without Puerto Ricans and that that'll be wonderful. But yeah, if gringos come to visit or if they move here because they really love the island, culture and people, that's fine. To live here just to evade taxes, exploit the islands beauty, and buy up a bunch of properties, that's another thing, and they should leave, Gringo Go Home.

I am not Puerto Rican, I am South American, but I go to vac in PR at least once a year Every time we go, we rent a 4x4 and drive to different places and stay in different towns. But when we are in San Juan, we only use Uber. So, I've been everywhere on the island, from South to North, from East to West, and center. I always get into lengthy conversations with locals of different towns about this issue, and the feelings are different from one region to another. One thing in common is Puerto Ricans welcome ppl who are respectful of their culture, their customes, their traditions, and their land. But interestingly, one thing I noticed in Old San Juan and San Juan is that ALL Uver drivers, that I use, dislike black Americans. They say they are the worst, loud, rude, unrespectful, demanding, and they make a mess in the car. They say only English speaking blacks are like that. So my take is that Puerto Rico is a wonderful island, and Puerto Ricans are warm ppl. BUT they demand and deserve that their visitors should behave in a civil and respectful way towards the ppl and their land.

Just got back from the island from a seventeen day vacation, the people are so kind and generous. The girls all have beautiful dark skin and hair . Us guys from the main land , could take a lesson from the men over there the grooming and every guy is dressed to the nine. The st seabastion festival was crazy people were everywhere

Many people in the island will say Puerto Rico is a country because it's culture and language are very different from the mainland USA. it's just not independent. Also, some will say it's a state, although not official. That's because the name reads Free Associated State, referring to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. So, depending who you ask, you will get different answers but that does not mean they are wrong.

@Vfr_ I'm a Puerto Rican myself, and I can tell you that many Puerto Ricans from the island actually do call PR their country, although we also recognize ourselves as American citizens. When other hispanics ask us what country we are from, we say Puerto Rico, not the USA. If you look up the national anthem for Puerto Rico, it's not the Star Spangled Banner. Clearly, there is a sentiment of nationhood. The one's that tell you otherwise are either raised in the US or don't want to give the wrong impression to mainlanders that we have sovereignty or aren't Americans. Like I said, you would get different answers, but I have always heard them express PR as a country and even a state, besides being a territory.

For me “Gringos” are the people from the United States that doesn’t have Hispanic or Latino background. “Gringo” is easier than “Americano”, it has less syllables, so I use Gringo colloquially and “Americano” or “Estadounidense” when I want to sound fancy 😂 and I don’t mind them moving to the island, as long they are actually living there and working and integrating with the rest of the population, instead of just faking they are living there a few months a year to benefits from the tax incentives…

Well they said the same at the time but instead of “chino” they used “griego” and that “griego” eventually turned into the word “gringo”. And it is still basically means the same nowadays. If you look for the word gringo in the Spanish RAE dictionary, gringo means anything foreign; it can be a Russian, a British an Asian, but nowadays in the majority of Latin American countries it is used specifically for people from the United States 😉

@@dougkalagian I mean in retrospect the secession of the at the time Autonomous Overseas Province of The Republic of Puerto Rico of The Spanish Empire(which was amongst the Spanish Empire’s first autonomous provinces) was done illegally. The proper protocols in the Spanish constitution at the time weren’t followed despite it being the result of a war. People tend to forget we had sovereignty for 11 months, with our own autonomous government, currency, representatives in Spains parliament, they could speak and vote, unlike our single representative in the US. Our politicians signatures were allowed on the Spanish constitution. We were granted the same citizenship as those in mainland Spain. We could do business with whatever country we wanted, we governed ourselves. As a result of the American civil war the south was still behind and a good chunk of our infrastructure was comparable with northern US states of the time; I don’t know why they like to paint it as the whole island living in the slums, everywhere you’re gonna have rich and poor areas. Both Spain and the US have done good and bad in P.R. But the fact of the matter is near the end with Spain we had a way better deal than the US has ever had to give. And if I would have been alive in those times, being a Republic member state of an empire is sure as hell better than remaining a colony. But nowadays, just free us, no more being treated second fiddle, give us our freedom. Let us be independent, it’ll be rough for a while yes, but we can make our economy a production based economy again with a reduced consumerist sector.
