🎶👑💭•••OKAY, first...I 💀 will introduce myself. I'm Michael Kane, I got the nickname "JUKEBOX Man" from band mates in LA 1983, because I can sing and know the lyrics to about every song from 1957-1990 in rock, blues, pop, country, motown, soul, funk, & r&b. I just discovered your chnl. I SUBSCRIBED and liked. Now, I decided to share something with you that is similar to this situation, that I think would be a great reaction for you. I will assume you know the Eagles song Take it Easy? Most peop!e have heard it. BUT...did you know that it was originally a Jackson Browne song, and then Glen Frey of the Eagles helped co-write, and finish the song. But, Jackson Browne recorded the song in 1973 on his FOR Everyman album which was several months before the release of the Eagles version on the Desperado album. I like JB version more, and I would like to see what you think! The Eagles version is faster, with a banjo rhythm, while JB's a tick slower...has David Lindley playing the pedal steel. I'd love to see your reaction, and with the same concept of you not knowing the original think the one you know is the original! So, lmk what you think it you can drop me a msg at mikethejukeboxguysings@gmail.com I look forward to checking out your other video reactions. ✌Michael Kane

Pretty much everyone who's even remotely familiar with the Eagles or Jackson Browne knows and has heard Btowne's version of Take It Easy.
@MichaelSSmith-hs5pw4 ай бұрын
Well Jukebox man, most people know Jackson’s version is the original. Anybody who knows The Eagles, Jackson Brown, Linda Ronstadt Ect, knows that history, it’s pretty common knowledge around here. Yes Jackson wrote a couple of verses of take it easy, then he got writers block & put it aside for awhile, when the Eagles were looking for new material, Jackson showed Glenn that unfinished song, “take it easy” Glenn wrote the verse, “ standin’ on a corner in Winslow Arizona……Ect” and finished the song. Glenn is the one who added Bernie Leadon’s banjo part to it & speeded it up a little. Jackson Brown only recorded the “whole” song after the Eagles had finished it, he put it out first to try & get the money out if it but it was a flop, the Eagles put it out & it became a smash hit. Keep trying, you might say something people don’t already know.

This is the original. Toy Caldwell the singer/guitarist and writer of this song wrote it when he was in the Marine Corps in Vietnam and witnessed countless fellow Marines getting dear John letters. May Mr. Caldwell rest in peace. The Marshall Tucker Band had many other songs too. Doug Gray being the main singer on most songs, except this one. That's Toy Caldwell here. Lucky to have seen them in 1980 in Syracuse, New York.

Gentle comment here but I checked out Matt Minglewood’s version and couldn’t listen much past the storytelling in the beginning. I’m sorry that his version was your initial introduction to this southern rock classic. I’m 71 now and grew up during some of the best decades of music from 1960s throughout the 1970s. This is one of my biographical songs. There is no pain more than a what a woman can do to a man that is hopelessly in love with her. Toy Caldwell just brings out that emotion that most of us have felt at one time or another. If you dig them, check out their "Heard It in a Love Song" and "Fire on the Mountain", among many others.

This band was from Spartanburg, South Carolina. In the early 70s, there were several bands that gravitated to Macon, Georgia (MTB being one, Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie and others) who helped promote the Southern rock sound that pretty much died on the vine with the advent of the disco era (sad).

Interesting that the flute line in the intro is actually borrowed from 'Going Up The Country', which is another song that many wrongly attribute to a 1960s cover by Canned Heat. That song's earliest genesis I could find was a 1928 Henry Thomas recording.

Toy Caldwell, the one singing, wrote this song. The Caldwell brothers were from Moore South Carolina about 30 miles from where I live and I have always had kin living in Moore and would ride by an old two story brick school house that they used to rehearse in and recorded some of their songs in back in the early 70's. I remember hearing on the radio years ago back in the 70's also of Toy Caldwell being interviewed and he mentioned the old Schoolhouse that they turned into a recording studio. He also told the story of how they got their band name on an old interview he was doing on the Bobby Bare Show and Bobby ask him how they got the name Marshall Tucker Band and ask if there, "is a real Marshall Tucker?" Toy said, "yea, he was a blind man that tunes piano's in Spartanburg and one night about a week before the Marshall Tucker band was formed, we had a gig and we didn't have a name for our band. " He went on to say that they rented a place from Marshall Tucker to practice and on the keychain was the name, "Marshall Tucker" He said, that name for the band was, "As good as any. And that was the name of the band." Critics, told the band that a flute in a Southern Rock Band won't work, but they tried it out and that became their trademark. That flute gave a lot of their songs a very unique sound that caught on and is classic to hear to this day.

Quintessential southern rock. I'd say the vocal stylings belong to the school of Ray Charles, or at least that's who they remind me of. Instruments like flute and violin were used in rock in that era. As for Canadian or Canadian-American bands of that general era, there's the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Rush, The Band, Loverboy, Bryan Adams, Steppenwolf, Blood Sweat and Tears, and of course Gordon Lightfoot. Lesser stars in The Stampeders, Nick Gilder, April Wine. There could be more, but that's what a search shows.
@OZAHS19595 ай бұрын
Just listened to your Matt Minglewood version. Having listened to the MTB version for 50 years now, I think I will stick with MTB. MM did a nice cover, but most of the time it's hard to really like a cover of something you've loved since childhood. (One great exception is Heart's version of "Stairway to Heaven" cover at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012) Since people are always trying to pigeon hole groups into various genres MTB was called "Southern Rock", but they really defy a generalization like that. The drummer started out as a Jazz drummer, and that has an impact on their sound, but you can also hear elements of folk, country, funk, and pure rock and roll. It's fun to see this live version, but it lacks any semblance of sound quality, so I recommend giving the studio version a listen. The MTB catalog from '72 to '78 contains ZERO clinkers. ALL of their songs from that era are simply amazing. It's a deep rabbit hole to fall into, and I recommend it.

One of the best concerts I ever attended was a Marshall Tucker show. They said they were going to be there a while, and they were. They came back out for FOUR encores, and brought their opening act (a band called Sea Level as I recall) out to jam with them for the last two. I remember at the arena the management kept turning the arena lights on to try and get the bands to wrap it up, but they just kept playing.😂 The 70s were amazing.

I was born in 1968 so I was a little too young to remember these songs, but they are my favorites. This is when you really had to be a musician. Toy Caldwell, the singer and guitarist, wrote this song while serving in the Marine Corps in Vietnam. The dear John letters part is correct, but they were written to his fellow Marines.
@coffee-xg6my5 ай бұрын
The Caldwell family was plagued with tragedy. Toy Caldwell, the lead singer with the gravelly voice and playing the guitar was a Vietman veteran who was wounded in battle in 1968 and received a Purple Heart. The person you see next to him in this video is his brother Tommy Caldwell playing bass who was killed in 1980 after the land cruiser he was driving clipped a parked car and rolled. Another brother, Tim Caldwell, also died in a traffic accident one month before that when he collided with a garbage truck on a highway. Toy Caldwell, the lead singer died years later in 1993 due to cardiac arrest brought on by cocaine use.

I listened to Matt Minglewood band cover and it is very good to excellent... .He really did a very respectful cover of Can't You See and I hope he is still doing great.. The Marshall Tucker Band was huge in the 70s to the early 80s even after two the three Caldwell brothers died in 1980. Southern musical acts were seen as cursed with tragedy and bad luck during that era and looking back to the history it is easy to see why ...The MTB has many great songs . I will suggest the original album versions of "" Take The Highway"" and '' Fire On The Mountain''' .Thank you for the reaction..

Being a Bluenoser (Born and raised in Nova Scotia .. home of the schooner Bluenose found as shown on the Canadian dime), I grew up with Matt's version too, I've seen him several times in early 80's doing it live in the bar scene of Toronto, once he jumped on my table and slide the picture of beer out of the way and did a few minutes playing on my table (it was great therapy for a transplanted Bluenoser feeling homesick). I went and checked out Matt Minglewood’s version and have to say, like a lot of "Copycat" songs, it is good. But It's easy to take someone elses songs and throw glitter and tinsel on them and try to steal their thunder like a lot of struggling artists do. It's a shame that you react to so many "Cover Songs" and even think that some are the original singers or writers of the songs. It's like so many people believe that " I Will Always Love You" was writen and sang by Whitney Houston and when many reacters see that Dolly Parton wrote and sang that song years before there was a Whitney Houston on the charts they can't believe it. I personally think that Dolly's version is more heartfelt and warming to me, but you can be the judge of that. So if you ever want to react to this beautiful Dolly song, I recomend this older version.. "Dolly Parton - I Will Always Love You (Live)". There is a newer version with the same name that is also beautiful and she explains who she wrote the song for, being Porter Wagner on the Porter Wagner Show she was a costar on. That version that she sang for the first time on the Porter Wagner Show is also on youtube here, "Dolly Parton - I will always love you (1974)", You may like it even better. It is also one of my favorite versions. BTW, if you don't have tears in those pretty eyes after hearing this, theres something wrong.
