I’ve ridden this several times, a few times as a kid before this accident and a few times thereafter in 2020. I remember the lap bars being so loose, and the latching points were very far apart, so the bar always felt loose .As an adult I am able to push it down a lot closer but it still feels loose. The loop after the final break run in the worst. You come to a near stop as the train crawls through the loop and finally comes into the station. I get enjoying hang time, but not that slow. Once as a kid I partly slipped out from the lap bar, with only my seat belt and grip truly holding me in place. To their credit I was a skinny kid, but it still freaked me out. And even after that and as an adult you feel like you’re going to slip out. Clearly the ride is safe if an investigation has been done but I just wish they would give it an over the shoulder restraint like every other major coaster on the strip (canyon blaster and Big Apple I’m looking at you). As a side note, they renovated the big Apple coaster, it still is a rough mess of a ride. While the new restraints and trains are better, it still left me with bruises for days.

I have been on green lantern at Movie World many times, I actually find it one of the scariest coasters I’ve ever ridden simply because it’s designed to make you feel like you will fall out. I am a heavy person and after my last experience I have decided that I won’t ride it again, the lap bar did fit on my thighs but only just, I wouldn’t say it was a snug fit. While I was going around I really felt like I was going to fall out at the part where it holds you upside down. If it wasn’t for the seat belt I think I probably would have, my ridding position definitely changed after being held upside down and I was terrified going into the next loop. Lesson well learnt and one of the only coasters I will never ride again.

I can't believe it had nothing in the manual about leg amputations. This is probably the most important rider requirement! I'm a ride operator myself and our manual for every ride all have this listed. for instance my ride requires you have 2 full natural legs including feet as the ride locks you in by your legs. most of the other rides doesn't allow amputations above the knee. If your manual doesn't list this I would bring it up to someone immediately because that's a huge issue.

Just a little background info for you… The Ride Admission Policy is operational, and is therefore determined by the Owner/Operator of the Amusement Ride or Device as part of the standard operating procedure which the Owner/Operator is compelled to develop in accordance with ASTM F770:6, based on recommended instructions and specifications provided by the manufacturer. Section 6.3 explicitly permits the Owner/Operator to deny entry to an amusement ride or device in order to avoid jeopardizing the safety of either the person desiring to ride, or other individuals to whom this person may present a hazard. ASTM F770-21:6.3.1 explicitly states that ride operators are to be given “guidelines on the special considerations concerning patron size, and the special considerations applicable to physically disabled and mentally impaired patrons.” I am not sure when 6.3.1 was added so it may not have applied to El Loco. Now, ASTM F2291 is the Standard Practice for Design of Amusement Rides and Devices, and it applies to the manufacturer. Section 5 requires that the manufacturer perform a Ride Analysis as part of the design process. Sections 5.1.4(1) and 5.1.4(2) are the Patron Suitability Assessment and the Patron Restraint and Containment Analysis (referenced in the video as part of S&S’s response to the incident) and are a required part of the Ride Analysis which, if you read through F2291, drives the entire design process. In particular, the Patron Suitability Assessment is intended to describe the intended patrons of the amusement ride or device, “including anthropometric factors that relate age and physical size.” What this means is that the Designer/Engineer is responsible for figuring out how to restrain the rider (as described in the Patron Suitability Assessment) against the expected ride forces in accordance with the guidelines found in ASTM F2291:6. In other words, yes, S&S should have caught this at the design stage. They should have identified the ejection hazard presented by a rider with insufficient lower body mass, and as they did not mitigate that hazard through the design of the restraint, they should have included that restriction in the ride documentation. One further thought. In the absence of prosthetics, did this rider meet the 48” height requirement? Could S&S have assumed that a double amputee would not meet the height requirement and would therefore be denied access on that basis?
@CoasterCollege3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight, it's definitely possible S&S assumed riders with hazardous lower body amputations wouldn't meet the height requirement. But in my opinion and experience as an operator that seems really vague and hard to train.
@RideManDave3 жыл бұрын
@@CoasterCollege I agree with you. Especially knowing that on many rides the height requirement is not based on the restraint requirements but is rather a surrogate for an age (=maturity) requirement and F2291-21:5.1,4(1) practically says as much. But per F2291:6 this is a Class 5 ride. We can see in the video you used that there are places on that ride which apply a sustained (defined in ASTM F2291-21:7.4.2 as =>200 milliseconds duration) acceleration of -1Gz. This ride needs to positively restrain any rider you can put on the thing, and if you’re going to do it with a rigid lap bar (in my opinion actually a very effective way to do it), you need to understand how that lap bar cooperates with the seat and the configuration of the human body to keep the rider from coming out: it depends on the thigh not being able to clear the bottom of the lap bar even if the torso is pitched forward and up. That’s usually accomplished by that limb being too long to come out in the limited space gained by lifting the torso. That reasoning would seem to exclude a double leg amputee. I don’t really want to know how S&S missed that. Or, if we give them the benefit of the doubt, why it never made it into their manual.
@FracturedOrigins2 жыл бұрын
@@RideManDave bad QC is my guess. I used to write engineering SOPs (software and hardware) for a fab, and our quality engineers were more nitpicky about the grammar I used than the technical aspect. I’ve ridden it. I hate it. You do get shaken up pretty bad, but the Big Apple coaster is worse. My one quip is that the Laos bars are terribly designed. They don’t go nearly far enough downward, and the latching points are super far apart. They also sit really low on your body, like you’d see on a non looping coaster, and so there’s nothing to hold you to your seat in the X axis outside of your legs. And the last two loops after the final break run are sooooo slow, I have slipped partly from my lap bar when I was a kid, but the seat belt and my good grip saved me. Until gravity pulled me back down. And even when you aren’t actually slipping in the restraint, the ten seconds of just slowly hanging there makes you feel like you’re gonna slip out

I think this & similar accidents are on the _park executives_ - not ride ops, park management or the manufacturer. Execs continue to demand the most extreme rides as drawcards while ignoring the reality that these rides will have lower ridership. The manufacturer will simply build whatever you ask for… so this leaves ride ops to deal with the unrealistic expectations of the general public. I’m 100% for park accessibility by _anyone_ but safety is far more important & the rules for riders need to be _simple to understand & enforce._ Once you’re quibbling about what part of each limb you need to have to ride _it’s too complex._ I completely appreciate the frustration of someone who can’t enjoy certain rides because I’m one of them…. yes it’s annoying, but you just deal with it. That's life. What’s _more_ annoying is doing the ‘walk of shame’ because the ridership rules are so complicated you don't know if they apply to you until you get to the platform... and the poor ride ops are left 2nd guessing what's safe. The park’s execs & owners need to take ownership of making their parks safe & inclusive by ensuring it's a place where neither park staff/ride ops nor park guests are left embarrassed or pressured.

i love this ride, i rode it last year and it was awesome. i’m so glad that it was able to remain open and that the person made it out ok. you would think they’d know not to let an amputee on a roller coaster without OTSRs

The official accident report on the 8/15/21 accident involving Top Thrill Dragster is now out. Out of respect for many of my close friends who were personally affected by this accident I will not be covering it in a video any time soon. However, to combat the huge amount of misinformation surrounding this event I encourage you to read or just skim through the report (linked below). The report is full of great information that will allow you to really understand what happened, without all the Facebook speculation. It's 620 pages long, but a good summary of the events can be obtained by reading the first few pages. I hope you understand my reason for avoiding this accident for the time being. @CoasterCollege3 жыл бұрын
Sadly it's just not practical in most cases.
@timk9873 жыл бұрын
Actually since 1990 new American coasters are compliant with things like wider queues and elevators to loading platforms. Many older coasters have been brought into compliance as well with regards to accessing the ride itself. However, certain disabilities still cannot ride out of safety. It's not discrimination because they're disabled, it's a protective measures for themselves, others and in some cases even the property. It's not unlike able bodied people being too short or too tall, or even just the wrong body type. So while it may be sad that not all who want to ride can, it not because the coasters aren't ADA "friendly."
@Saturnthroughstars3 жыл бұрын
@@timk987 Disagree. By technical terms, it is discrimination since you have to refuse a group of people from riding, even if it's for safety reasons, not prejudice. Don't sugarcoat the situation.

@@Saturnthroughstars People are not permitted to ride on a case by case determination. It’s not about any group not being permitted. There are million of disabled people who’ve ridden coasters.

@roseprevost80813 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem is that parks are afraid of getting sued for discrimination when they don't allow people who shouldn't ride do so. Sorry, but I'd rather have a guest mad than injured or dead. Remember what happened to the guy with no legs whose gamily caused a stink because he wasn't allowed to ride the Superman ride? They let him on, he fell out and was killed. Then they supposedly sued anyway. There's no winning.
@CoasterCollege3 жыл бұрын
Very different situation there, this was wholly due to the ride manufacture.

Surely someone could have figured out this wasn't a smart idea. Did they really need a manual to spell out this specific situation to make the safe call? When in doubt, wouldn't it make sense to err on the side of caution?

If I were in the operators shoes, I couldn't really ask the rider to not ride as there was nothing in my training or manuals that I could reference as being the reason for her being unable to ride.

@Derangedlefty2 жыл бұрын
The lap bars are perfectly safe. The ride is meant to make you feel like you’re going to fall out, but in reality, they’re perfectly safe. Hundreds of thousands of people have ridden this roller coaster and only one person fell out and it’s because they were an amputee. I’m glad this ride only has a lap bar, as over the shoulder restraints would be very uncomfortable on this ride

Person with fear of hights should not ride? Why?... Are they going to die from being afraid of hights? Wouldn't that be a good way to create exposure therapy to experience hights in a safe situation? Especially such hights that aren't really that high? Wierd
@adde95062 жыл бұрын
Ride restraints should not involve the active participation of the rider. If someone passes out, they should be just as safe as a conscious rider. Maybe a little more bruised, but safe. "At least one functional hand and arm for bracing" is a manufacturing defect. On the other hand, I don't really see that legs need to be present below the knee if there is no contact with the restraints below the knee. Every rider should look at the restraints and think, "Is that going to keep me in there?" And every ride operator should look at every rider and consider the same. Whether it's in the manual or not, if it looks sketchy, it probably is. It's better to waste someone's time calling a supervisor or mechanic for a more experienced opinion than to waste their life. A major part of operator training should be HOW to tell someone they have to wait or leave, not just to do it.
@CoasterCollege2 жыл бұрын
The bracing will not be the difference between a rider being restrained and not. It's included in most ride RAPs to stop injury caused by sudden slowdowns or acceleration.

@@ayajade6683 There are other dyslexia-friendly fonts out there that don't look like a young child's handwriting. It's hated and made fun of because it looks childish (and thus also immature and/or unprofessional), it has bad design, and it can actually be quite difficult to read sometimes too (like a small child's handwriting), not because it was one of the first mainstream fonts that made life a lot easier for dyslexic folks. I don't think comic sans should get a pass on being a crappy font just because it currently has widespread availability (which is only due to being pre-installed on certain popular technology). My son and I went on this ride in 2018. At 9 years old he was on the lower end of the height requirements but he did meet it. I swear the operator had not tightened his lap bar close enough to his body to keep him in because while we're upside down hanging, he started screaming that he was slipping out. If I wasn't completely reaching over and holding him into his seat with every bit of strength I had, I believe he would have fallen out. This ride is very dangerous.
@kayleedinkel86622 жыл бұрын
When I was around 9 I was short for my age and my twin was way taller than me. A lot of ride operators felt bad that I was too short to ride and let me on anyways. I remember my dad having a death grip on me one time because I was slipping out of the restrains but I didn’t care, I loved the thrill and didn’t understand the dangers of it. I’m extremely lucky nothing bad ever happened.
