What Really Happened on Rollo Coaster at Idlewild August 11th 2016?

On August 11th 2016 Rollo Coaster at Idlewild was operating normally. Around 12:02pm a group of 4 riders were loaded into the train, 3 of the riders were children under 48”, but all were above 36” so they were allowed on the ride. The ride was dispatched from the station. About halfway through the ride the smallest of these 4 riders, a 3 year old rider was thrown from the train and to the ground next to the coaster.

(except those kiddie carousels that used to be quarter-operated back in the day, assuming they can even be found anywhere now. the super-short ones with like 3 horses. even then i'd be watching and ready to catch them if they fell lol) i got the honor of taking my niece, when she was that young, for a ride on the same carousel i used to ride on when i was a little girl, and that's such a special memory for me, sharing that with her.

You people are talking out of your collective rears. Rollo Coaster is a gentle and incredibly safe coaster. It was safe when these idiots who disobeyed the rules got hurt. The coaster ran for decades with no incident. People literally disobey the rules on the ride and they end up injured, and somehow that is the coaster's fault. Kid didn't even get hurt that badly. That's how safe Rollo Coaster is, and they ruined it with restraints.

I see a lot of people throwing shade at the parent involved switching. But what probably happened Was that child that switched with the three yr old was scared where the other two were excited. So in a quick decision to calm down the one kid made the call to switch them. I get overwhelmed with one kid, let alone three. Should the parent have thought a bit more probably. But at the end of the day the trained people should be trained well enough to know what is safe. (Not that I put a ton of blame on the operator either in general) But some people are out here acting like this parent is super neglectful/being judgemental. And I just can't see it. Also, I think people have this idea that 3-year-olds are super incapable and small. And I was in that boat until I had a 3-year-old. They can do and are a lot more aware and capable than you think. It's one of those things that's hard to know until you experience it. It's just a horrible thing all around and while some of the blame does fall with the parent, Like I said I think people are being way too harsh. 😢

​@@eastdalecrt the thing that confuses me is the simulation video keeps showing the adult in front when the actual photo shows an adult behind with the 3 kids around them. If I was with others who I'm responsible for then I would want to be at the back or side where I could see them all, not in front where who knows what's happening behind me. While it is odd they didnt choose to sit with the smallest, some 7 - 8 year olds can be surprisingly responsible and the 3 year old was still right in front of the parent (if they are the adult shown in the picture) and as you said the other child might of been more nervous or needed someone with them more than the [supposedly safe/secure according to ride ops] 3 year old

If anyone's confused, the on-ride camera was before the turnaround prior to the accident, and today it's after the turnaround. Which explains how the picture was taken with the child still in the seat

This was an awful accident, but it’s good to know that the child recovered and that Idlewild completely replaced the old trains and brought the old coaster fully up to modern standards instead of either doing the bare minimum or just demolishing it.

The park also implemented IROC training standards, and have an entirely new ride operations team. From what I’ve heard and seen they’ve really brought the hammer down on safety.

Something you pointed out that I want to expand on is the operators signing off that they got training on something they couldn't have. This unfortunately happens A LOT in the industry. For me, I was just told to initial/sign everything at the end of my training. I insisted on reading and signing everything, but this is a common procedure at parks. How am I to know what I was/not trained on? It's not like the training has titles. It's more of "today you're going to help with filling cars. Here's the requirements, if someone's outside of these they can't ride. [Employee] show them what to do for a bit then let them do it a few times". So how would I know whether that involves training in operation with multiple trains or if the operation during single-train operations (or vice versa) is any different?

I'm not in the roller coaster/amusement industry but I am involved in training. In my organization, no single trainer can sign off on a competency. Each one has to be assessed multiple times over the duration of the individual's training. The trainers themselves are also continually assessed. I don't know how to apply that to your industry but it has served us well.

I work as a ride Operator, and we have to be really strict about the seating arrangements. it leads to arguments with Park guests all the time. But this just Shows that those rules exist for a reason.

yeah I live in Pittsburgh and aside from Idlewild, our other park, Kennywood has the same situation, theres a coaster where the lighter rider needs to sit on the inside (and single riders aren’t allowed). They are SO strict about those things, and I remember that roller coaster being stricter with height requirements, too- it’s crazy how lax the idlewild training must have been

I'm so glad the three year old made a recovery, but it is insane that this ride had zero seat belts. The poor maintenance of the ride was really unacceptable too. If dirt and plants are covering your hinges, that means no one has looked at them in a long time.

You might consider doing a video of what happens to a ride that has a fatal accident after it is forced to be dismantled. The Orlando free fall is currently for sale. Well that is, unless it has been sold in the last few weeks. It is fascinating what happens to these attractions, at least in this particular case. I'm sure there are several other rides that have gone through similar things.

That's why I disliked how quickly people were saying crap like Final Destination 3 "absolutely 100% couldn't happen ever!". I'm like.... dude... this particular accident, with the correct balance of lack of training, lack of maintenance, and bad luck shows that _anything_ can happen. Let's face it -- this roller coaster was a few hundred rides away from that train derailing or one of those and things being much, much worse. As you said -- as terrible as it was, this was honestly the best-case scenario before things got much more horrific. If one of those beams were to break (which could happen, based on the fact that wood was likely rotten), the whole car could have crashed. I don't care how "light" of a ride it was -- a fall of 20 feet in a train car could have killed a bunch of people.

Just because someone is 36", that doesn't mean they have the physical and mental capacity to keep themselves in the train. I place blame on everyone, but more on the park. The parent should have rode with the youngest child. The park obviously wasn't up to par with the maintenance of the structure. The operators should have never let the parent swap seats away from the smallest child.

I wonder if they didn't realize it wasn't supposed to ride rough. I suppose all of the dirt and brush that hid the damages is why the ejected child wasn't hurt too badly. That was good, but it is sad when preventable incidents force historical rides to change stuff. They could theoretically be safe, but with maintenance dropping the ball or tweaking 'safety' features questionably, lack of trained staff, and lawsuits common today, they stand no chance. At least this one survived it all.

Interesting idea, the ride is very old. one could chalk up an old ride to be inherently 'rougher'. With less and less first-hand knowledge of the original ride quality- some might just accept it. It is crazy how they never had an engineer come around and check-off on the ride though, those supports would send off a red flag to anyone.

I was at Six Flags Over Texas last month, and the workers had to e-stop the ride on La Vibora. A couple little girls were trying to get on using Flash Pass through the exit, which is NOT the Flash Pass lane. The Flash Pass lane was where me and my parents were. I don’t know if the operators told them this, but they were sitting on the ground in front of the exit gate, and one of them was yanking it open and closed. The operators told them multiple times to stop, but they didn’t. I guess one of them panicked and e-stopped the ride. It took a few minutes to get the ride back up and running, but watching them do it from the station was fascinating to me. Eventually, we got to ride, and I had so much fun riding it.

I live in Pittsburgh, and I used to go to Idlewild as a kid. I'd actually thought the boy had been standing up, since that’s what everyone here was saying- the fact that the accident happened due to negligence and most people are misinformed is honestly upsetting. I seriously hope the training problems were addressed, Idlewild also has a wild mouse and a round up, which makes three potentially deadly rides if employees are THAT inattentive. As for the maintenance issues, my guess is that it had something to do with the issues the wild mouse was having. That thing was hardly ever open, I wouldn’t be surprised if the park was diverting time and resources away from roll-o coaster trying to fix it, since the wild mouse was a pretty big (and at the time more recent) investment for the park- thats just a theory though, I could be completely wrong

Can anyone explain to me why in American state is often department of Agriculture who is responsible for rides and such? I honestly don't understand the leap you need to make from "agriculture" to "roller coaster"

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it is due to the evolution of theme parks from the county fair (or state fair, agricultural shoe, etc.). While the county fair was typically started just to show off livestock and other agricultural stuff, with the advent of portable "fairground" rides, the department of agriculuture ended up getting the role of supervising that along with the rest of the county fair stuff.

11:36 you can see a woman in the front car holding her phone out wide in the open in front of the operators and they say nothing. I haven't ridden Rollo Coaster, and even though it seems like its not very intense, a phone can still be a projectile, and while traveling at 25 mph it probably won't kill anyone, it can still cause significant harm, especially to a small child. Idlewild is just being reactive, not proactive, and at some point I'm sure some one is gonna get hit with a phone on that thing.

Why is nobody talking about the carelessness of the mother? Who leaves their 3 year old toddler to sit next to their 7 year old sibling on a ride with no restraints. The child she was sitting with seemed a lot older and in less need of protection.

Wow, seemed like a very avoidable accident if the ride operators did their job. I always hate seeing such major safety modifications being performed on the trains. The original train design was special and extremely rare. It sucks to see them go, and ultimately because of a lack of maintenance and poor training :(

Having been on this coaster 50 times from 2005 to 2015, it was clear to me you always put younger children on the inside for safety. I wouldn’t ever let my kids on that coaster, or any ride when they’re 3 years old, by themselves, in a seat. Yes, the employees messed this up, but the parent bears partial blame for this. I also walked down the asphalt road that connects the parking lot to the walkway around the water park many times. Certainly this was preventable.

I'm glad the 3 year old was ok, but I can't imagine letting a 3 year old ride a child/family coaster. I didn't get to ride my first coaster, which was the dragon one, until I was 5 or 6 years old

It's a palace entertainment Park what do you expect. We have lake compounce in Connecticut I absolutely love the park but I hate the management. I really wish they would be brought up by someone else.

Yeah you won't see me getting on any ride built before like, the 80s. Disney parks are my one big exception because they do regular maintenance and refurbishment, and have an extremely low accident rate. Anywhere else? Hell no

Idlewild is essentially a kiddie park, and I think that makes people complacent. They're just kiddie rides! They're not dangerous thrill rides! WRONG!
