Characters losing spotlight is definitely one of those things that happens when a show goes on for so long. Fairly Odd Parents basically lost 80% of its supporting cast by its last few seasons. FiM had a habit of adding a bunch of new characters for roles that could be filled by existing characters, but I guess expanding the world isn't a bad thing, even if characters get neglected. It's also worth noting that if Hasbro didn't want focus on a character, the showrunners just simply couldn't do it. Hasbro wasn't interested in telling any more stories about Diamond Tiara which is why she didn't have any role past season 5. An infamous earlier example is Hasbro forcing Lauren to add Pip to the show in Luna Eclipse to have a boy character; and when she pitched ideas on what to do with the character, they weren't interested in using him. So a character was basically added for one episode for no reason; the showrunners found use for him a few seasons later of course, but Lauren was long gone by then.

This is a problem MLP had with all the pets in later seasons. Aside from Angel bunny they all just faded from existence. It makes sense, all the other animals had little to no personality and were mostly used for single repeated gags like Owlouicious' "who" and Gummy's dead eye stare. Once the joke got old they no longer had any reason to exist.

My thought was always just "They either forgot or couldn't find a reason to write him in", but if I had to give an In-Universe reason... Provided the evidence that Owlicious is only in photos after season 5, it may be safe to assume he died but Great-Horned Owls can live for up to 15 years, in the wild. In captivity they've been seen to live to almost 30, so I have high doubts he perished, even if he was towards the 10+ year mark when he found Twilight. I think probably following the destruction of the Golden Oak's Library, Twilight gave Owlicious to her parents to take care of him as she feared something like this may happen again and didn't want to put her beloved bird friend in danger!

Aww no I like that! And in order to come up with a potential owlawicious episode, you could have an episode Twilight’s parents have always been kinda struggling with the absence of their three children as by s3 all their children had moved out of canterlot, and Twilight, being a princess now, doesn’t have the time to look after Owlawicious, so they take the bird in and struggle with adjusting to being pet owners (maybe they trip over each other bc both the parents and Owlawicious are used to being helpful and cater to twilight specifically and have trouble accepting help from themselves).

Tbh, I think it's just a stylistic choice. The later season owl is meant to look cute. Since we're seeing Owlowiscious from Spikes perspective him having simple eyes helps phone in the concern of. "What is this owl's motives?" It turns out it's just that it's a helpful owl, but having eyes that aren't cute and readable helps with it. Take Flurry Heart vs the original baby ponies and how different their design is as an example.

There was definitely a redesign moment in the show for a lot of things. The most ugly to me was the giraffe design in one of the later seasons. It looked like a Littlest Pet Shop character with how big its eyes were. I liked the approach to more realistically designed animals earlier on in the show.

Maybe he just went away to "home"? Well cause firstly unlike all the other pets, Alowycious (at least that's how I spell his name) is just randomly taken in as Twilight's pet, he was about to go before Twilight asked him to stay for a while. Meaning he just randomly saw a scroll while flying about who knows where to and became Twilight's second assistant. Soo maybe throughout the seasons he just goes back and forth from his original home to Twilight, maybe doing some Owl stuff like hunting and whatever. He is still a wild animal, Twilight just took him in afterall (Gummy is too but ehhh I'll just leave the guy be)

That's what I had thought of him in his consistent appearances, that he probably would be back & forth from the forest or roofs and Twi's, since he was a wild animal at first. And I like the addition idea a comment mentioned, of him also just sitting/sleeping in deep corners of Twilight's houses because he's nocturnal. ^^

Yeah. Basically, my headcanon is that, after the destruction of the treebrary, Twilight says something like "You will always be welcome at the castle, but I also understand that this cristal building in the middle of an open space is not your cup of tea." And so that they stayed good friend, viewing from time to time, but that Owliocius is autonomous in his life. As for the practical reason, I never understood why they didn't show him from time to time in the background when Twilight is working late. Without giving him a role or anything, just to show that the friendship remains.

i Think the whole point of Twilight's pet was not appearing at all, she describes him as someone who can help her at night, while Spyke is sleeping, and the photo shows thats he's still Twilight's pet in the castle, and if you think about it, none of the pets shows too much, and owloiscious is already introduced as a more reserved pet, a night pet. so i think its part of the character that he doesn't appears but you know he's there. idk, just my opinion

Him showing up in the photos means the *animators* remember him, not necessarily the writers, I think I heard somewhere that there were a bunch of different writers each season, it's entirely possible owlowiscious was just forgotten about by the the newer writers but the animators or storyboard artists still put him in every now and then. It was probably like 'oh we need a shot of Twilights family photos, who's all of Twilights family again?' And so the storyboarders remind themselves Twilight has a pet and there you go

I always thought Owlowiscious had unused potential. I really thought he would turn out to be important in uncovering more lore, like maybe he was Starswirl the Bearded's pet/spirit animal (which would make it interesting why he 'chose' Twilight to be his owner), or even that he had belonged to Princess Luna before she had been banished to the moon, like how Philomena is Princess Celestia's pet. The way g5 is going I'm pretty sure we will never see him again, but it would be interesting to me if he became like a guide of some sort to Sunny.

The opening for season 8 onwards had me fooled into thinking there was going to be another Thorax and/or Ember episode, as it showed the two flying together near Twilight’s castle and school. But they only had brief roles in the season 8 premiere, and made one speaking appearance each in two different episodes in season 9, never appearing together or with Spike again. So much hope and potential wasted.

They shouldn’t have shown Owlicious in season 5. It made a lot of sense to me to think that after Tirek destroyed Twilight’s home, that Owlicious fled since there wasn’t the treehouse anymore. Twilight’s gesture to Owlicious as he flew away looks a lot like she was saying “don’t go” and would’ve made for a farewell to the character. Also, I love how Cozy Glow was in your theory lol

Maybe the thing here is to actually roll back all the way to his introduction to find the answer. He is Twilight's Night Assistant. He does function in the role of a pet sometimes but his main use is to aid Twilight at night time. Most of the episodes are daytime focused after a certain point, so there simply is not a story we see on screen that has much of a focus at night where "Owlowiscious" would have a reason to be around.

I just thought of him kinda being like hedwig and just delivering letters to important people, like from other lands. Chances are he could've gone somewhere dangerous like the Dragon lands and could've died. There also could be the idea of him being under some kind of testing due to his differences to other equestrian owls. If you look at the owl in the race for Dash's pet, it has sentient eyes as opposed to the more cartoony eyes that our main boy has.

The additions of background shots like the photos in later seasons, without any attached dialogue/AFX, would not have been done by the writers, but by the storyboarders. And it's weird, because it would have been exactly as much work, and no more an exercise of discretion, for the storyboarders to add him into the background of shots as it was to add photos.

Owl Wishes also had an important roll in season 4 episode 23 where he was encouraging Spike to speak up to Rarity when she was under the books spell. Remember how Spike had a pet Phoenix named Peewee and then later on he had to let him go and when Peewee got older he started a family. Well I wouldn't be surprised if that was the same for Owl Wishes. He left Twilight so he could start a family of his own just like PeeWee did. And I wouldn't be surprised if Owl Wishes would visit Twilight time to time since they're so close. 🦉❤️

All of the ponies pets disappeared honestly. Rainbow Dash with Tank, Tank I remember last seeing majorly was when he went into hibernation and I straight up thought Rainbow Dash forgot about him It is only Fluttershy and Pinkie, that, I think, stayed connected to their pets more so. We saw Gummy got massive in the future. and that Fluttershy had many more bunnies (To me I assume that Angel had a family) AppleJacks family had 3 more Winnona-looking dogs, so I assume Winnona had puppies too. Only is it Twilight and Rarity that we don't properly see their pets of in the season 9 finale. And I don't count the pictures that the main 6 reveal haha We sort of see all of the ponies pets in the future scene from the last episode (In a way) But even with all that, all of the ponies pets got their spotlight in the very early seasons. So I think it is simply because they didn't wanna take too much time on the pets. I honestly feel like there was so much more to Mlp Gen 4 that didnt get covered, so more pet episodes wouldve meant more cramming.

Is actually discord's spy pet. Discord is seen messing with animal many times throughout the show and in g5 comics. And he is also attached to fluttershy who just so happens to be an animal loving pony. Coincidence, I think not. The owl is just one of the ways discord kept tabs on twilight even before he was released from the stone statue. He no longer needed owlicious after he became more and more Integrated into the Mane 6 hence why the owl slowed down showing up, then stopped by the end of season 6 when discord helped save everyone ensuring his spot in the main 6 permenently. So he could pull off his season 9 shenanigans without suspicion. Thus saving everyone starting from season 1 all the way to the end the whole time. How's that for an explanation?

This is my guess: My guess on the real world explanation: I would assume the writers didn’t have much use of him so that could explain why he was in the background (and even if he was used like for example when Owlwishes was the voice of reason in some moments) but I assume that Twilight still cares for him like the other mane six cared for their pets. But my theory using the in universe situations: since Twilight became an alicorn in the magical cure episode and I would assume between then and when she became a teacher in later seasons. I would assume likely either Owlwishes either lived near the school (or in the school kinda similar to Harry Potter where the kids who brought an owl they have a room for all of the owls to live until they go home each year) or likely he passed away before the final episode (which explains why we only saw him in pics or as a still frame in the final episode) so Twilight likely had a picture of Owlwishes as a memory sake. Edit: I forgot to mention one thing, based on a few comments since Owlwishes is an Great Horned Owl. Since he was an wild owl before Twilight found him he would likely pass away at the age of 15 (if he was born captive which I doubt before Twilight got him he was an captive owl if that was the case. They tend to live around 30 years old) so if he did pass away, depending how much time had pass my best guess when Twilight found him he was in his later years since I don’t think Owlwishes would pass away if he was a younger owl (like say an young fledged owl which is an owl who left the nest for the first time)

Did a little bit of research: Owlowiscious heavily resembles a Spotted Wood Owl (considering both are nocturnal, its safe to assume this is his actual species of owl). In his first appearance he's adult sized so he's maybe 2-4 years old at the youngest when he's first introduced. Even though there is no clear passage of time in My Little Pony, its safe to assume that by his last appearance a few years have passed. Unfortunately, the youngest a Spotted Wood owl can die at is 10 years. If we assume he's four years old in his first appearance, that means around late Season 6 to early Season 7 he's most likely passed away. Rest in Peace Owlowiscious

I can assure you all that owlowiscious is still ALIVE, even until the end of season 9. You can see him in a group photo on the friendship mirror. He will always be Twilight's friend and pet (and number one assistant but don't tell Spike jk).

I think Owlicious just wasn't as popular a pet as the others as he only really had a dynamic with Spike and otherwise wasn't that interesting. Opal is a sassy assistant to Rarity. Winona helps at the farm. Tank played a huge part in Rainbow Dash's character development. Angel was the opposite of an angel, but still was an interesting rabbit to see with Fluttershy. Gummy is Gummy. Twilight didn't _need_ Owlicious as part of her character or to really help out, she had Spike. He was simply included to show us he wasn't deceased.

And besides unlike Equus (what I call the world of Equestria) where talking magical multi-colored pastel ponies can keep almost anything both sapient and non-sapient critters as pets, but on Earth, Owls are not normally kept by Humans as pets cause they are wild animals that are illegal to be domesticated and kept as pets in the USA and probably some other countries and I don’t know where Canterlot City is located on Earth… most likely somewhere in The United States Of America where owls are not allowed to be domesticated and kept as pets therefore Sci-Twi's pet is instead replaced with Spike The Dog so he gets the pet status to his Twilight alone. But if Sci-Twi ever met Owlowiscious while visiting Equestria, she would be surprised on how her Pony Princess counterpart was allowed to keep an owl as a pet though he is more of Pony Twilight’s nocturnal assistant while Spike The Dragon is her diurnal assistant since Twilight likes to do late-night studying sometimes and loses some of her time for sleeping. Speaking of which what if Twilight properly introduced Owlowiscious to Princess Luna who is The Princess Of The Night and she could have been fascinated by him. In fact Princess Luna is probably already friends with nearly all of the nocturnal sapient and non-sapient animals/creatures in the world of Equestria. Anyway yeah, the same reason applies to why the Human Pinkie Pie can’t own a real alligator even if he is toothless and owns a stuffed alligator named Gummy instead which makes sense considering that Gummy barely does anything (except does somethings with his tongue and the scene in his debut in Feeling Pinkie Keen where he shows Twilight that he is toothless by biting Pinkie Pie everywhere and Pinkie is shown without a single scratch) anyway compared to his eccentric and hyper owner.

owlicious is one odd forgotten character,, but what about Pewee? you know, Spike's pet baby phoenix? Spike did keep him at the and of their episode, and yet its been complete silence on the little guy ever since. I even forgot he existed until I was listening to the Past Sins fan book where there are a few scenes of Spike caring for him in the background

What probably happened is that when the revolving door of writers were changed throughout the series, the new writers didn’t have experience or knowledge of Owlowiscious and so he slowly disappeared. Any reference such as photos of him or him silently in the background would’ve been made by the animators who remember him and not the writers who don’t.

The thing is, owls totally can turn their heads right around like that. Also their eyes are HUGE and take up most of their head. I didnt consider any of that "evil", its just how owls look. It was scary to Spike as he had never seen an owl before, but being scared due to ignorance doesn't equal Owlowiscious being evil.

Owls hibernate in the winter, I would've liked if in the episode where Rainbow Dash has to let go of Tank for the winter if Twilight could open up about how hard it was to say goodbye to Owlicious for the first winter.

I feel like the simplest answer is just that by S6 there weren't any episode ideas that he could reasonably star in, and with the amount of characters FiM had by then, they couldn't find a good place to organically insert him into the episode. He's still around by that point and is still her pet, but they didn't wanna allocate any episode time to him when it could be spent fleshing out the dozens of other new characters introduced. Especially in the later seasons when the Cutie Map came into play and the Mane 6 were spending more and more time outside the castle, there just wasn't the room to include him.
