I can't really say anything bad about his choice of tools either. Yeah, nice tools would have been better but it's not a requirement. I have a pretty nice bench multimeter that I like to use, but if a lightbulb is all you need then why not? I think the take away is that building a working computer is fairly simple as long as that person knows what the requirements are and can be careful. It's definitely much more approachable now days. There is some case such Lian Li which is mid and full ATX of Dynamic and he can go that way if he prefer small form, PSU on side, still had slot for HDD and SSD and just take 2 slot ram motherboard over 4 slot. IDC if he wants wifi bluetooth, but it still not make any sense in his builds.

Thank you for doing this video and for trying to help Stefan, but I have to say his attitude after the video was made makes forgiving him difficult. If Vox media was the issue there was no reason to insult "tech nerds" who's criticisms were deserved. If he said "I made a lot of mistakes in that video that I shouldn't have especially for a tutorial. I asked them to redo the video, but they refused. My apologies to the tech community for the quality of this video." That would have gone a long way to helping him recover from The Video, but unfortunately he wasn't prepared for how harsh the internet can be, to be fair not many people are, and he reacted poorly. I would have been no better. Mistakes were made and I think collaborations, like this one, with several more tech channels would let him recover from The Video. LTT may have the money to get him to cohost a new build video perhaps lampooning the original video or just a "do-over" I was ready to crap on your opinion and say he deserved it, but this video has helped me forgive him and hope the tech community can come together to give him the chance at redemption he deserves.

Stefan has too much pride and is so high on his horse he's blaming everyone but himself and he'll never see it. He's grasping at every excuse he can come up with to make it seem he was never at the wrong here. Starting with him saying "I was an athlete..." kind of making it sound like "Yeah, I'm not a computer geek, I was a jock who played tennis and worked out, so back off nerds." Why on earth does being an athlete make a difference here. It doesnt. That apology on twitter wasn't even an apology, all he listed were excuses. For someone who states they've build PCs in the past these "silly" choices dont make sense even for being rushed. Especially with the tools required to build a PC, that's just something pulled out of his ass because that's a very hard mistake to pull. "You're going to need an Allen wrench." Wtf. He just wont own up to it and say "My bad, I thought I knew how to build a PC.", but no. He has to talk high and mighty saying he knows many CO's and executives. He's close to multiple manufactures and he's so inside the tech industry he can pretty much work where he pleases. No, Verge didn't throw him a bone, he threw the bone at them. He did not come across well unfortunately. I've known people like him, he will be fine most likely. Even now he fails to acknowledge his shortcomings when it comes to PC building. A bit of good old self-deprecation in this interview would've gone a long way to improving his public image, but he completely fails to understand this and instead decides to big himself up "I'm the youngest ever blah blah blah". This is to prop up his own ego, to reassure himself he's not a failure. There were obviously other factors in play here - the lack of editorial checks, the limited time to film, the way The Verge subsequently dealt with the fallout. However, there was a laundry list of errors in the build, some minor, but a good quantity of completely unforgivable comments which showed massive inexperience when it came to PC building, some arguably dangerous (putting the PSU the wrong way around thus blocking ventilation comes to mind). You were very generous with your comments towards him Timmy, it's obvious he's still raw about the experience regardless of what he says. He's still young, must be 21/22? I'll chalk it up to inexperience in life and how to handle situations, especially something that blew up like this did. Goes without saying the abuse he's received online shouldn't have happened - those people should hang their head in shame, this is a PC build guide we're talking about ffs. Still he needs to own this, and come and laugh WITH us at just how bad the end result turned out. Until then he's not going to get much empathy from the tech community.

I built my first PC when I was 16 and the first thing I did BEFORE unpacking the parts was spend some time googling how to do it. I didn't have the luxury of working for a huge website like The Verge and was basically on my own. Built a PC that still works to this day almost a decade later. For someone who likes to call himself a 'tech journalist', he's the sort of person who makes me angry about incompetent people 'stumbling' into jobs somehow. How did he get that job, seriously? He's built PCs before? Really? I don't buy that, no way. If he'd built a PC before filming that video, he'd have avoided most of the mistakes he did. If that were the whole story, he'd be worthy of pity and a second chance, but his attitude after the whole thing, calling well-known tech KZbinrs "angry nerds" sort of tells me all I need to know about his character. His attitude screams of superiority complex and ultimately comes off as an arrogant douche who likes to make himself look way bigger and smarter than he really is. The Verge is also to blame since someone higher up than this child should've spotted the errors. There's tons of video guides available on KZbin and I'm sure there are step-by-step 5-10min guides available online. Nobody stopped him from learning before getting to work, but he probably felt he's too smart for that....

Look I totally get your point on people roasting this guy a little to harshly, BUT this video was made to show people "new" to building a desktop PC how to build said PC and there lies the issue. So many simple but important steps (1st one being the tool selection) were done wrong or just not shown like installing components to the MOBO before you install it inside the case, doubling up on the Thermal Paste, and the complete disregard of a planned and organized build process to make it easier on said "new" people to follow along with. I think your point of them possibly rushing the making of the video makes a lot of sense, just the editing alone and the continuity were complete garbage and I think it was doomed to fail no matter who the host/builder was and it's really ridiculous that The Verge did nothing to help this guy after all the backlash and I pretty much agree that The Verge is 99% responsible for this garbage!

I got what you're going for and saying "he is just a human being, so we make mistakes and the fact that Verge rushed him" makes sense. But you can't deny the fact that he is the Tommy Wiseau of PC building. You say "oh he applied thermal paste wrong" or "He called them tweezers" as if those minor details were it... he, like Tommy Wiseau and his movie, made every single mistake he could make. There is nothing 'Verge rushed him' about putting the fans towards the back or installing the memory side by side. That in itself shows he didn't know what he was doing, it wasn't rushing. If you come to a major platform with the idea of making a video on how to build a pc, and also saying you've built pc's before, you better know what you're doing. Because this way it just sounds like he came up with an idea to give himself some exposure through a solo video on a big platform (which backfired). BUT you're right on the fact that all of that isn't a reason or justification to bully someone, and especially not for death threats or racism. The best thing he could do, as a lot of people already suggested, is embrace the meme and make a pc building video with some of the people who roasted him. Make it something we can all laugh about, including himself, and forget about it. Because the fact that he defended himself so harsly and still does, instead of laughing and saying "Holy sh*t that was hilariously bad" makes it people don't want to take his side.
