Rolland is white in the books, why cast him different in the movie? Inaccuracies like that do drive people away. They should have made a movie on the song of Susana if they wanted Idris in the show, he would have done well as Eddie.

Mthammere2010 Stephen King the author of the book chose him for that role... Is there something terrible wrong with picking someone who's best suited to the job regardless of skin colour? FYI its never specifically mentioned that he's white or black. The best description we have is "a Clint Eastwood like personality" notice the word personality?

I actually would'nt mind an anthology series that details the exploits of Gunslingers throughout the centuries provided Stephen King wrote some of them (if not, all of them). Kind of like "Love, Death, and Robots" but way less up it's own ass and with a more unified theame and direction. Could be either live action or animated (though I would prefer animated). 1 part Canteberry Tales, 1 Part Various Arthurian myths and Legends, and 3 parts Short Stories in the The Dark Tower universe. Hell, I wish Stephen King would write an Anthology Book of Gunslinger Tales. This would only work as a spinoff. If they were to do a TV series of the actual Dark Tower story they need to either follow the books (exactly as they are written) or follow the Comic Adaptation (Exactly as it's written).

For all its faults The Hobbit is way better then The Dark Tower. Its always better to make a too long (over 3 hours) version of a masterpiece book series rather then a too short (under 2 hours) version. It may be bloated (very bloated even) but it wont miss anything important in the story and will take the time to really focus on the characters and lore.

B Smith Yes it is actually King's stories don't allways work well changing mediums. Look at the film and Miniseries versions of The Shining. The film is pretty terrifying but leaves a good but out, where as the miniseries is laughable but faithful. Books and film are very different mediums. Books require the reader to use their imagination, films actually have to show everything that happens.

I haven't seen the movie, but am I correct to say that they tried to adapt a series of books over TWICE as huge as Lord of the Rings into one 90 minute movie? And you don't think you're going to disappoint fans of the books? That's pretty f'n stupid on an epic level. (How all these Hollywood types got into the business and became millionaires by being so epically stupid is mind-blowing.) Should have just made it into a 7-season TV series.

Regardless of whether you think LOTR was epic or not, you must agree that it was a successful series (BTW I am not talking about The Hobbit series) and that was my main point. I think The Dark Tower could have been a successful movie series that could have lasted nearly a decade or more worth of movies.

Blame should also be put on Akiva Goldsman. Sure, he's credited for A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man but he's also the writer for Batman & Robin, Rings, Transformers 5, A Winter's Tale, and Lost In Space. Also, some of his "slightly better film credits" like the Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, I Robot, I Am Legend and A Time To Kill should've been huge smashes but they all just fail to become classics--like those films, The Dark Tower should've been EASY to turn into a great film, but he didn't possess the talent to do so... such a shame.

What makes this source material great is character development and by doing what they did they screwed themselves. How did King let this happen, he's seen it play out many times?
@TheDazzRat
@TheDazzRat 7 жыл бұрын
King has depreciated into a deranged, sellout, liberal nutjob. Honestly, even reading the Dark Tower books you can see the spiral decline after book 4. Book 5 was entertaining even if blatantly derivative and clumsy. Books 6 and 7 were like reading something from a different author than the one who wrote The Gunslinger. So many of his other books after, say around the late 90's, were beneath contempt and unworthy of the time to read through to the last chapter.
@BeeBumper
@BeeBumper 7 жыл бұрын
Dazz Rat I haven't gotten there yet. I read the first 3 when released but haven't read any King since in those first 3 books, one of his own statements in the book was "I'm not sure I'll even finish the series". That pissed me off to no end and I stopped reading him because I felt why would I commit to something he has yet to commit to himself. It turned me off all his writing after that statement. I only recently picked up the first 4 again to read through and so far they don't disappoint as I knew the first 3 didn't, sad to hear it loses something as it goes on but I will commit to the last 4 and see what happens after that, I cut him slack on the Hollywood adaptations a little because this isn't the first time he wanted one thing and they did another.

Me. Rottentomatoes is an average taken from many sources indicating whether a movie works or not. Simple as that. It works in most cases, of course there will be a few you, me and everyone disagrees with. That's how averages work. If the genre is something you have a soft spot for or if you love the source material then fair enough, don't let the reviews stop you. But don't ignore be surprised at the genral consensus. Usually people who say they disagree with critics all the time are the same people with questionable taste.
@brandonpick1486
@brandonpick1486 7 жыл бұрын
Rottentomatos is a horrible site like 90% of the ratings on there are just completely wrong. Like the fact that iron fist got like a 0% or some shit and that show was amazing. And same with dark tower I've read the books and I thought they did a great job on the movie. Granted it's a lot different from the books but not by any means a bad different.b
@brandonpick1486
@brandonpick1486 7 жыл бұрын
I dont listen to critics or people's opinions on movies, games, or music. Because I've had people tell me so many times that a movie was horrible and I watched it any ways and it turned out to be the best movie ever. Or just really fucking good. And then I have people tell me a movie is great and then I watch it and its horrible. So my point is never listen to critics or your friends when it comes to movie the only way to make sure is to just go watch it your self and then judge it your self
@kevtb874
@kevtb874 7 жыл бұрын
Brandon Pick but it is a weak movie. By any standards. Like a 6 or 7/10 at the VERY most. More like a 5. And 2 of those points are for Idris Elba and the fact it had some decent production values. The rest is just weak storytelling. The movie seems like it was cut up and thrown together messing up the pacing and losing half the plot and tension in the process (because that's EXACTLY what happened). If you like it fair enough but like I say if you find yourself disagreeing with the general consensus (made up of all sorts from respected film critics, newspapers, magazines and public opinion) more often than you agree with it PERHAPS the problem isn't Rottentomatoes but the fact that you like formulaic standard fair that is rightfully seen for what it is. Maybe when you grow up a little more and watch more films and appreciate what truly good films are, then maybe you'll see the difference. Maybe then you'll recognise regurgitated cookie cutter mediocrity for what it is. That's what this film was. Not good. Not bad. Just middling which is disappointing considering the source material and the names involved. It could most definitely have been better. As a well adapted TV show it could have become the new fantasy show to replace GOT. It could have been a juggernaut. It could have had everyone talking. It could have been fucking great. As it stands it's a forgettable super short bog standard chosen one story. Maybe you really do think this is a good-great film. That just tells me you haven't watched enough good films to make a solid comparison. Otherwise it does not compute. otherwise. Of course this might seem OK if your diet of films consists of superhero movies and tween fiction.

I personally enjoyed the movie very much and find it very odd that people dislike it. I will say that I have never read any of the novels. I will also say that I think the reason a lot of people have problems with certain movies is it seems more and more these days that people are unable to suspend disbelief long enough to immerse themselves in a cinematic presentation of a story. I am a die hard Tolkien fan, and I know many felt that the LotR and Hobbit movies were terrible (from the standpoint of comparing them with the novels), but I enjoyed them immensely. Maybe I'm just weird, but there are a lot of movies that people hate that I love.

What really went wrong is casting a black man for Roland. I would be equally offended if Odetta Walker was played by a white woman. He is described over and over in the book as white, by other characters, and by narrative. Odetta calls him white bread, and ahinkey, and he is described as looking like Clint Eastwood with piercing blue eyes. Discrimination is wrong, no matter who it falls on. If this was their pilot test for Idris as James Bond, this is the answer. NO.

The trailers and the buzz on social media make it sound like they took the amazing concept of the dark tower and turned it into a weekly CBS drama. It is sad that they view Wizards and Glass as a prequel rather than starting with a young Roland and show what the world was leading to. The ending could have been the death of Roland's mother and Roland chasing the dark man across the wasteland. How will they justify a fifty year old black man and Susan Delgado. It is sad when people who only understand money get their hands on other worlds.

The director's idea of keeping The Dark Tower short because he thought of the film as a setup for future Dark Tower stories doesn't understand storytelling. As mentioned in this video, and in my own viewing experience, the film felt incomplete because it incorporated too many ideas that were incomplete in themselves. Telling an incomplete story with incomplete ideas is a recipe for disaster. The approach to creating a feature film experience of the Dark Tower series should've started with the first film focusing on backstory. Maybe recreations of early Dark Tower books, or at least a story that setup the core elements of the Dark Tower series. Who were the Gunslingers? Where did they come from? How were the "portals" created? How was the Dark Tower itself created? I wanted to like the movie. But, by the end of the movie, I had more questions than answers. One last thing. Fuck Rotten Tomatoes. I don't know why anyone quotes that source. Most of the critics on RT wouldn't know a good movie if it fell on them. I don't listen to film critics anymore. Do yourself a favor. Avoid reading any reviews before seeing a film. Just see it for yourself. If you're so anal about what movies you pay for, stick to Netflix, it's cheaper.

I've seen enough of the movie to say: they missed the point and made it just another BS special effects movie. What made the dark tower books, and all of king's books great, is the story. Not the special effects, not the wow look at that, the story....the characters.....and failing at getting actors who FIT the description of the characters correct, doomed this project right from the very start. If they'd stuck by the books, and what made them great, they would have had a hit....instead? corporate movie making took over and ruined it.....again.

Saw the movie with no knowledge of any of the books beforehand. I dont think the movie was in any way bad it was pretty run of the mill. Action was allright, story was allright, everything was just allright. Movie was short and if this movie was given 2-2:30 hour run time i think the movie couldve delved a bit deeper into these characters and do a bit more world building to try and make the action(which was actually pretty well done) feel like it meant something. I liked the casting its just a shame because it appears that there's a great story to be told from what im seeing in the comments and these actors couldve given us something more worth our while emotionally. All in all not a "bad" movie it was fun while it lasted just ultimately very forgettable. 5.5/10

Sony should have just based the film on the first book... if it's too confusing for some people than they can read the material it's based off of... libraries are a thing and King is a popular author. film studios should not be touching book adaptations for just a quick buck if the gunslinger was in the hands of a studio that honestly cared for the material things would have turned out better :/

Wow, I keep reading "everyone is just too PC and they going over the top with this PC crap." Yet, I read the comments in this section and I'm just shocked at how raciest everyone sounds. Roland being white wouldn't have saved this movie, Roland being black wouldn't hurt the story from the books that much(specially if they are not even doing a movie for each book) and placing one black guy in a movie isn't being PC (specially given that Idris Elba is such a great actor). People need to just take it easy and relax.

If they made a WW2 movie and made Hitler black, and this provoked a backlash, would you find that racist? Sometimes, the race of a character actually matters. It would be different if they took a character from a story where race isn't a factor and changed the race.
@Skynetexe
@Skynetexe 7 жыл бұрын
a WW2 movie would be based on actual history which is fact. so yes race would matter. This movie is based in a FICTIONAL book. so no race does not matter. the ppl who are getting butthurt about the gunslinger being black, yes i do believe has some racist undertones. otherwise it would not be a big deal . but to go outright and say casting a black guy as the gunslinger ruined the movie where clearly there were more important factors that didnt make the movie a huge success is pretty racist to me.

True, but black-facing him didn't do it any favors (especially with Elba, the man has 5 facial expressions and 3 of them are a confused, slightly cross-eyed stare). Most people don't like the race, gender, age, or sexual orientation of their favorite characters changed, and that's just how it is. Respect a character as they were created. Changing them just makes it look like you think poc characters can't achieve fame on their own.

Changing that one aspect of the characters in the movie totally screwed up some of the biggest plot points of the three books following the first book.. They need to scratch the whole damn project and start over with someone that will actually make the movie and or series the true fans want.. The story is there, the plot is there. All that's left is finding someone with enough guts to make the movie and do its right.

Cad, you're pissing in the wind saying we're racist. The Dark Tower series is supposed to have racist elements, it is part of the story and something that gets dealt with by the characters. Hell, an interracial couple is even born from all that hate, so dry your snowflake tears already! By painting Roland black, they've completely killed off the TRUE strong black character of the story and set the stage for a guaranteed blockbuster FLOP in the future. THAT is what we're mad about, the story not being told as it was written, this isn't some minor change like with the Jurassic Park and Lost World books by Michael Crichton.

Howto make a novel adaptation movie: -Get all the books. -Leaf through the books to get the names of some characters and locations. -Ignore the books. This is now your story! -Make up a story you like and include the characters and locations. -Add some references to movies you enjoyed which have nothing to do with the novels just because it's cool. -Find some actors to play the characters. The books are not general knowledge? Then use some well known actors so the general audience can get connected to the movie. -Now hire the original author to be included in production to please the fans. -Don't let him screw up your story. Remember: This is your story!

I started reading the dark tower series many years ago. The back story of Stephen King finishing the series after his near fatal accident is fascinating. The stories of people pleading with him ti finish the series before they literally died is what encouraged King to finish the story as only he could. Yes, this movie left a lot to be desired. I still enjoyed it to a degree. That said, the ring series saw uts share of attempts before Peter Jackson gave us a tremendous accomplishment.
