you missed a part... labels and booking agencies will often sign an artist to get them out of the way of artists they want to push... if you are competition for one of their artists, they will sign you and then push you off to the side to empower their favoured artist over you.

Thing people forget is most the artists out now are not proper artists. They are just the face of a product. The wrapper it comes in. The real artists and musicians are the ones behind the scene writing, playing, and producing everything. Then these artists get inflated egos. They forget that they are not the reason they got to where they are. They forget their place. If you are an artist that writes and plays your own stuff. All the power and best of wishes to you. But these artists now are frauds and most people are too slow to catch it. Some of the artists are so dumb they try to sue the record labels for "their" music. Then realize "oh yeah, I didn't write any of this stuff". It's always someone else's fault. Always the victim.

One thing to keep in mind when doing the “record deal is like a bank loan with worse terms” comparison is that the record advance doesn’t need to be paid back if the revenue just doesn’t cover it. If a label gives to an artist say a 250K advance, and the album totally stiffs and only brings in like 50K in revenue from the artist royalty over several years and the artist is then let go, the label just has to eat that difference as a loss and the artist is off the hook of having to come up with that money out of pocket. Whereas a bank will always come for that money no matter what. Labels are supremely shady and effed up, but it’s worth noting that. This is saying nothing of course about how the label is still pocketing 50-85% of every dollar earned anyway…

Interesting. I love hearing different opinions on this topic. Labels need to be open and honest w/ artists. Right from the jump, let artists know that they want the next Drake or Christopher Brown. Let artists know that they not gon see the kinda money they think they gon see. Let artists know that they only gon get a couple of years in the limelight. Let them know that they may have to pay a publicity firm $10K - $15K in order to keep they name circulating throughout social media. Basically, let them know that nothing is 100% guaranteed. Being open and honest basically eliminates all future stress and overwhelm. Labels need to quit telling artists that they have the potential to be the next Michael Jackson knowing good and gotdamn well that it takes millions of dollars to accomplish. Nah, streaming is dreaming so how do they plan on actually getting folks to BUY the music again? That's a huuuuuge problem that most artists face. Nobody has the answer because today's consumers are accustomed to free music. Actually buying music would legit solve the problem. Let's face it. If you can get it for free, you gon get it for free. Straight like that. I'm a '90s kid so I had the experience of going to a record store, buying the LP and establishing a physical attachment to the physical product. And lastly, what are labels gonna do about the recycled, microwave "music" that they keep plaguing the airwaves with? That should be squeezed into this equation as well because if the music sucks ass, that's gon be a problem whenever the artist gets ready to do shows.

You state you are . "The voice of truth in the digital age of the music industry." if so then you must reference all sources to backup your discussion Just becasue you say just becasue you put it on the internet does not mean its true. I operate transparently even to the point all artist will soon access complete royalty statement form distribution and see the breakdown of each royalty payment and bank their receipts when they want. No matter how digital the music industry gets label still have and will have important roles to play, and there will be artists who are better off not being on a label. Freedom to choose is how it should be which is why I and many other labels offer single sing. ep/ album contracts leaving artists free to release their next drop themselves or through another label. My splits are 40% label 60% artist/s. Includes a lot of free stuff including mentoring. I am getting tired of all this talk about 'evil labels' Yeah sure there are labels lke that out there but its mainly the large ones or smaller labels owned by the larger labels. Thanks for reading.

Its called paying your dues. Getting onto a record label is good for everyone. You need a team to play in the big leagues. If you think you can do it all by yourself, you are a fool. Its like playing and winning the lottery...you can get lucky and pick the numbers on your own or you can have the insider information and get the big money with your team of manipulators to tell you what numbers to play and WIN BIG! Its your choice. Now if you are the type of person who pisses his/her money away, go work at BK or Walmart and stay away from the contracts. JMO

Why not just send all your music to someone who wants to release your music or send it to a friend and have them say its a "sample audio" or some random shit and having all the music you want out there and all the music the lable wants out there
