The Kushan Empire ruled over a large part of the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia. In this vast area, there existed different religious traditions. In this video, we look at the different religious traditions that were practised by the Kushanas.

Great job Jay! Your videos are well-researched and engaging to watch and learn a lot of things. I do have a few points/questions. I understand the Kushanas were descended from the Yuezhi who are of Tocharian descent and not an Iranic tribe (e.g Scythians). Some Kushana coins depict the rulers like Kajula and Vima (is this probably derived from Bhima?) with a crescent moon on the brow in the manner of Shiva which may be alluding to their Shaivite beliefs.

Hi Jay, very educational vids. I have a very split hair question for you... I am making the assumption that the Kushans used both Greek script (for spoken Greek) and Kharosthti script (for spoken Gandhari Prakrit) in their earlier years, is this correct? Second, did the Kushans ever stop using the Kharoshti script or Prakrit language and if so why? Third, Why did the Kushans not adopt Kharosthi instead of the Greek script to inscribe their "Arya" language? But maybe the last question is a loaded one.
@JayVardhanSingh
@JayVardhanSingh Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I don't think the Kushans stopped the use of Kharoshthi. It was during the Kushan period that Kharoshthi spread in Central Asia. About the last question, I think the use of the Bactrian script was because, for the Kushans, the region of Bactria was their homeland. It was the core of the Kushan Empire. So it made sense to use their "own" language. They indeed adopted Indian culture to a considerable extent, but the Kushans also maintained their distinct identity.

Jay I understand you don’t mean any offense. However the word cult does have a negative connotation such as worship of fake gods and should not be used in this instance, we already have a better term of Shivaism. I understand that as part of your studies you have to read books from 19th and 20th century authors who due to their bias used such terms. Unfortunately our historians continued to borrow from the same vocabulary. It’s best that in 21 century, cult is not associated with worship of our Gods. It’s more suitable word in context of god like fan following of movies.

Dionysus is the Greek god which known as shiva in Mathura as per Megasthenes in Indika. This was approx 400 years prior to Kushanas. Greek used to worship own their Gods , not Indian Gods . may be some Iranian Gods but not Indian. Because these Gods sculpture or any written proof not found in India during 1500BCE to 500BCE . Which advocated for Brahmanism. Indian accepted Greeks Gods and Greek accepted our Buddhism. Many Bodhisatvas are Greek Gods. Herakles , Dionysus etc. So Buddhist accepted Greek Gods first in India. If Shiva was an Indian origin God then we should have to provides archeological evidences of these Gods in India. Oral tradition of Vedas or Vedic period workout proof can not be accepted. So Greek adopted Buddhism in India and they proliferated Buddhism only in the world in form form of Mahayana , worshiping idols. Which was not like Hinyanas, which we finds in Mauryan’s Era. They did not proliferate any Shaivism or Brahmanism or Hinduism to other countries. Shiva , sarveshwara, these are some name of Buddha , Buddha in the form of shiva , drinking Halahal poison , such kind of sculpture we finds in angkorwat temple , in Kambodia.

@@sudipkumarroy3790 Yes definitely whatever you wrote is nonsense 🤣🤣🤣!! 1.Wikipedia knowledge- the coins you saw , they are not Krishna or Balarama. Wikipedia is not the final truth. Can you read Brahmi Script then read what is written there. Is there Krishna or Balarama's name?😂😂😂😂Nooooo!!!then on what basis you are speeding this nonsense false? Are you a product of mental orgasm? Some scholar says it's Buddhist Dhamma chakra in king Athekles hand. It's more logical because Greeks were Buddhist kings. They spread mahayana Buddhism all over Asia, they developed two important sculpture Buddhist arts like Gandhara and Mathura, they arranged Buddhist religious council in India, they complied Buddhacharta. Helidorus saying Bhagvatism is nothing but the Buddhism.only. Don't dare to establish Brahmanism in 500BCE to 800 CE. This was only Buddhist or Jainism's Era. Siva is one of the name of Buddha Amang his 21 names. Angkorwat temple in one sculpture Buddha is drinking Halahal a poison is siva Buddha. Magesrhenis says and I quote Dionysus a Greek God, which was know as Bodhisattva by Indians of that Era worships in Mathura as Shiva. And they were Buddhist people and not today's Hindu, as Buddhism was the only religion of India. And Jainism as minority. Vedas Rudra is just having some similarities with Shiva but both are not same, and don't be under impression that Vedas are old. Vedas also wrote when Devanagari script developed say after 12 century CE. Now don't tell me oral tradition! Do you have any proof for oral tradition!!😂😂😂. In IVC we haven't found any temple nor in Vedic period. How you prove these structure are Shivlingas?? About Yogic posture Jaina are saying this was the Rishabh deva. Yogic posture means Shiva?? Haha nice try to make them look Hindu gods with huge assumptions and trying to twist words to fit a narrative 😄 iranic and greek gods that's what they are. And keep ignoring the bamiyan buddhas constructed in Afghanistan not to mention all the architectures and coins of buddhism still being dug out there but talk about some small temple of greeks/Iranians and assume its some Hindu God. 🤦‍♂️

@@JayVardhanSingh I was talking about the culture on the whole following buddhism before the kushana even came there pointing out the architecture. Didn't huvishka also follow buddhism according to some texts? Let's just hypothetically assume if it was giant vishnu statues instead of buddha statues there and you would have found Hindu temples all across Afghanistan would you assume the people of the region and the kings following a separate religion there?? You yourself said they followed greco Persian traditions but then say sarva and oesho means shiva.. how?? You say buddha coins are less but forget to mention in early buddhism image form of buddha wasn't permitted. Showing buddha in physical form started in indo greeks time so kushan must have carried that tradition later on hence less coins of buddha before kanishka time.

Without any archeological evidence you try to proof brahmical hindu gods worshiped by kushan. Kushan empire have diverse culture and people followed many religion Kushan kings respect all faith with evidense of their coins. And there is no any shiva, shiv linga , trishul something proof that they are hindu. Only by showing name this this this doent mean they are hindu. Hindu word came from muslim sultanate then mughal.not any brahminical text contain hindu word or hindu religion. kushan patronoge buddhism conduct 4th buddhist council. Bamiyana buddhist statue construction completed by kanishka.

Also Fire worship didn't originate in Vedic religion. Fire worship was originated in Ancient Iranian religion. Vedic religion was originated from Proto-Indo-European religions. Mostly Ancient Iranian religion was closest ansestor of Vedic religion. Also Zoroastrianism started from Ancient Iranian religion. Saying that Zoroastrianists were Vedics is wrong.
