Too many inconsistencies are there in the story. 1. If sugarcane juice is supposed to kill a tree by attracting ants, how would milk counter it? Won't milk attract more ants? 2. Two kings who are supposed to have destroyed the holy relics of Buddha got divine retribution, but the later invaders who definitely destroyed other holy relics were not affected by it? 3 There are so many other stories about people trying to destroy the tree... I'm confused as to which ones hold true. That said, I think there must have been some animosity between Shashanka and the Buddhist subjects of this state however, as legends meant to extol the virtues and truth a particular philosophy do, this account seems more of an exaggerated legend than true history.
