What Rod and Reel I Use To Catch Rockfish. Another Great Day of Ocean Kayak Fishing

Catching rockfish out of Depoe Bay in our kayaks. Slow day of fishing on the Oregon coast, but we did well at the end. When fishing from my kayak, I prefer a short rod of about 6 ft to 6'6" so it's easier to manage. I want to thank Louis for coming out with me. I had a great time.

Get some pool noodles and cut sections out them and zip tie those to your rods. They'll float when they fall in the water. I've lost several rods kayak fishing and

WOW! A Great Cabby catch!! A question for all; You prefer spin reels vs drag fail level wind (bast caster) reels?? Very interesting that that fellow "peddling" his kayak seemed up to speed with your troll motor power!!?? It appeared that you were trolling for rock fish? Were you? Or do you just find a highpoint, rock outcrop Mtn and JUST "jig" all around it where rock fish hang out??

bring some cut bait of squid to tip the lures with. Sometimes just the smell is enough to get a strike from them.

Did you mark where you lost the reel? Maybe, buy a strong neodymium magnet with a rope and drop it into the water. Thing is I don’t believe the reel is magnetic 🧲. If it is it’s not very magnetic. It’s mainly aluminium or hagane. You would be surprised what that magnetic pulls up.

I have some older Shimano reels for trout, the older Quik fire reels, makes for easy 1 hand casting. I use a bunch of Okuma rods, both bait cast and spin cast. I cut the first eye off the bait casters for easier casting using spinning reels. I like the Powerpro line on my rods too, in case you hook onto a big mass of seaweed. Oh, by the way, real nice and flat! a mirror ocean is always fun! @ 37:40, was that your rod and reel?
