@Never So Good Vegan LLC good question. It really depends on what you want to do. Most people I've worked with who are adopted have both birth and adopted parent - you can change the relationship and specify birth and adopted. On Ancestry go to "edit" at the top right and then "edit relationships." There's a drop down menu on the right where you can select "biological" or "adopted" or others. You can also add another parent there as well. Good luck!

at 3:34 what should 1st cousin once removed call you? 1st uncle once added? or grand uncle what should 1st cousin twice removed call you? 1st uncle twice added? or great grand uncle? ....and 1st uncle twice added in law, great grand uncle in law if it has to be great great grand uncle this way, then why not calling 1st cousin 3 times removed a minor minor junior (or little) cousin
@AncestryAimee Жыл бұрын
Most people just call them cousins or uncles in conversation with them. The details help you in DNA analysis or other things.

Alot of people think generation has to do with age. Sometimes grandchildren can be 20-30 years apart in age

I have cousins, but I 3:57 still don't still don't understand the removed part?

Basically removed is a different generation - like you and your niece or nephew are a different generation.

@AncestryAimee so my parent's 1st cousin is my 2nd cousin to me because I only share a great grand parents? and their kids are my 2nd cousin once removed?

That’s right!

If I have a first cousin twice removed, from my perspective our common ancestor goes back 2 generations to my grandparents. However the perspective is different for my twice removed cousin who has to go back 4 generations to get to that same common ancestor. Does this change the relationship from first cousin twice removed to third cousin once removed? Who's perspective is used to define the relationship?
@AncestryAimee2 ай бұрын
That’s a great question! You use the perspective of the person closest to the common ancestor. It couldn’t be third cousins, because your common ancestor is closer in relation to that cousin. I know it’s confusing. I hope that makes sense.

Ive tried to explain this to my dad and he cant understand this. He says my parents 1st cousin is his 2nd cousin and that children of individual 1st cousins are 3rd cousins and I tried to explain it doesnt work like that but he resists. Cousin terms have to be consistent with generation. Can you please reply.

Here’s a chart made by FamilySearch. Maybe it will help. cms-b-assets.familysearch.org/0d/57/4849a9a744ab85ca337cf2a06dac/cousin-calculator-3.pdf Whoever is closer to the common ancestor provides the 1st or 2nd. Whatever applies. If it’s my great grandparent and your great great, we are 2nd cousins - once removed because we are one generation different.
@williampatterson3062Күн бұрын
@AncestryAimee I have showed my dad the chart before and resists it and said he was going to draw it out his way. He refuses to accept it and can't understand it.

Oh so handy, I’m close to my cousins and their kids, we always called each other second cousins, now I realise we’re first cousins once removed, which sounds way cooler lol thanks heaps, I’m waiting for my DNA results to hopefully find an adopted half sibling so I’m trying to learn everything while I wait :)

Wait, I’m confused so I just found out my first cousin… My dad’s sister’s son is actually my second cousin once removed. So what does that mean? Does that mean his mom or my dad is not the child of who our grandparents are??
@AncestryAimee5 ай бұрын
No. Your dad’s sister’s son is your first cousin. No removed. If he were the the son of that sisters son he would be first cousin once removed.
@AncestryAimee5 ай бұрын
If you’re taking DNA that spread of possibilities is fairly large. Or there could be a half relation there.

Just found your channel. Love it. What is the best genersl genealogy book for a beginner that you would recommend? Thank you.
@AncestryAimee Жыл бұрын
I hate to say this but I’m not sure what to recommend. Most books cover specific things like Ancestry.com or more advanced genealogy topics. The biggest issue is things are changing so quickly in the industry that I find many published works are obsolete. I would recommend you attend Rootstech virtually (or in person) the first of March. There are many beginning (and beyond) classes. They will have handouts as well that you can print. FamilySearch allows many of the classes to be viewed for quite some time (last years classes are available now). I did a video a while ago that I removed from public viewing because the audio was so bad, but you can view it here (excuse the audio!): kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHLJZauAq9-pmZo
@AncestryAimee Жыл бұрын
I would search for KZbin videos that fit what you are seeking and also Google the topic. But pay attention to the date of publishing so you are looking at more recent information.

This Western explanation makes sense after trying to figure out the 2nd cousin and once removed cousin meaning, thank you. However, in my family (Chinese ethnicity/culture) - those children of my first cousin are considered my niece and nephews too. They refer to me as aunty. If you speak Chinese, we refer to our grandparents and great grandparents etc plus aunts and uncles with names depending on if they are first, second, third etc and if they are on paternal or maternal sides. So, when you call them by name in Chinese - you would know who they are and exactly which side of the mother or fathers side in the family tree.
