Today, we'll talk about how to find an inexpensive, but trailworthy beginner mountain bike. In this video I use a $329 XC Hard tail mountain bike as an example, and even do a little bit of shredding on it.

My bike only passes 1.5 and that's the derailleur hanger and it fits me but bigger would be a bit better. But for less than 90 bucks that my parents didn't even want me to buy (because they don't care) it is a decent bike . it has a usable gearset, not absulute shit suspension, not shit Tyres. At least I take care of it and do maintenance regularly unlike a lot of people in my friend circle.

When I first started getting into mountain biking seriously my first "real" mountain bike (a 2015 Trek MT220) had none of the things mentioned here besides a derailluer hanger, and even though I knew it wasn't that great of a bike I still rode the hell out of it, did lots of maintenance on it, and the only thing that needs replacing is the tubes. I even sent it off a few small drops and took it all around the city, jumping all over curbs and it's still in good condition. Even if your bike isn't so great, just get out and ride! No excuses!

My first mountain bike was one I bought from a coworker for $100. I don't remember the brand, but it was actually a pretty decent bike, and it got me around for a year after I wrecked my car. My second mountain bike was a top of the line 1993 Trek 6000 that my wife bought for me. I loved that bike and was very upset when it was stolen last year, or I would still be riding it.

Absolutely perfect beginner bike. Upgraded to a 2020 Stump Jumper ST 29er now but I can't sell the Hardrock. Hanging onto it for buddies to ride and for me to play around on. Hey seth I just wanted to comment that I purchased my first mountainbike. It's a trek marlin 7 on an xl frame and I owe it to you, I started watching your videos while you were still in Florida. I started with a cheap-o walmart bike, hopping up curbs and using driveway edges as transitions for little jumps. After I folded the derailleur I got a bmxbike on the advice of a friend, and it just wasnt a good enough mode of transport for me to ride to spots like I could on a mountainbike. Thank you seth, for everything that you do!

@Pixellight Gaming If you invest in a good bike it will last. my first bike was about 600 bucks and it lasted me over ten years. I went riding about 3 times a week so if you break it down it was less than 1 dollar a ride for me during the life of the bike (of course there were occasional parts needed and maintenance). You can also find really good used bikes as well, it seems its easier to find components on deep clearance rather than full bikes so that could be a good route for you as well! Hope you give it a shot because its a lot of fun.. maybe even try renting a bike first for a few weekends to see if you even like it?

@Pixellight Gaming Totally not true! These style bikes can be had for less than $500 in the states and closer to $200 if you are willing to buy used and shop around - that's about the price of a decent video game console. Sure you might have to save up a bit if you aren't well-off but don't buy into the industry hype about having to own the latest greatest stuff and upgrade every 2 years. That's obviously how new MTBs are marketed because they gotta sell to someone, but there's room for all types of budgets and all types of bikes. There's guys I ride with who are serious shredders and crush it on 10+ yr old hard tails. Please stop spreading lies.

@@rogercotman1314 it was the 26 inch GT stomper for my 10 year old. There's not the greatest comment about Dick's sporting goods putting the bike together, so I ended up ordering it and doing it myself. But the bike itself will blow you away! The colors aren't exactly what you see, so I had already read reviews. But I got him the new red one and this bike is gorgeous! The red is vibrant, but still red and not orange or pink. And all the equipment is so much better than you're going to think it's going to be. The big choice for this bike is, for his age, everyone's buying adult bikes so that they can grow into them but getting the smallest size they can. Going with this stomper GT pro in 26 inch, they actually have the pedals in a better positioning and the neck and handlebars are better for their age and size. He and I are so proud of the choice I made! And he's really enjoying it on the trails and the jumps.

@@rogercotman1314 your best bet is the schwinn axum. They have a 400$ and an identical 500$ with a dropper post. Do alot of research but for your price range that's honestly the best thing worth getting. Theres another model under that called the "boundy" it's the second best of the cheap bikes in my opinion 240$. But I wouldnt go lower then the axum. If you have time and patience check pawn shops and the used market. Then you'll most likly get alot better quality bike, if you go that route inspect the bike very well to see if anything is wrong with it and if you need to replace parts and fix it. Either route I just talked about i would take the bike apart mostly after you get it home and reassemble it correctly and to your liking👍 just to be correct and safe. I bought the 400$ schwinn axum by the way, took it up to walmart customer service and pointed out some zip ties and misc little things I knew were fixable (they didnt)..and they gave me 10% off which isnt bad on a 400$ bike so it was 360$. That said theres a huge bike shortage rn In most states and good entry level mtn bikes are hard to find, prices are high and supply down. Walmart has a 90 day return policy so I'm honestly still bike shopping lol. New and used. But this schwinn axum is not a bad bike at all for the price like I said, I just have an urge to get a better bike and might put some more $$ towards it. But if I end up keeping this one I'd still be happy and just upgrade a few parts on it.

McNulty funny how you have no clue what you are talking about. Cable disc brakes are GARBAGE. V brakes are way better and don't suffer from overheating or fade. What I think you are trying to say is Hydraulic disc brakes, which are NOT cheap by any means, but far superior to V brakes and and 2000% better than garbage cable discs Why don't you do some steep downhill with cable discs, and come back and tell me how great they are???? Its clear you never have

Just came across this video. I bought this exact bike back in November 2017 and immediately added a Luna Cycle BBS02/52v kit. I've got over 8,100 miles on it a variety of bike paths, trails, hills, street on it. Over the past two years I upgraded the rear cluster, derailleur. Because adding the mid-drive changed it to a 1x8 I've since converted it to 1x9 with a lower first gear to better climb steeper hills with less power assistance. I also have wider knobbier tires on it. 8,000+ miles I've worn out a few clusters, chains, brake pads, even a chain ring which is now a narrow-wide. I actually used this as primary transportation for most of two years, faster than public transit in most instances. I've yet to, though plan on upgrading to hydraulic brakes and upgrading the fork. This bike is a workhorse, it outperforms many bikes that cost more and gets complemented all the time.
