I am a Subi tech Subaru has silicon gasket removal spray, basically the only gaskets on the Subarus are head gaskets(you still put a dap of rtv on the corners), valve cover(kinda cus you still put rtv on the bends), and exhaust gaskets... Cam carriers, upper and lower oil pans and front cover is rtv basically everything is.... Fastest way I've found is get the big stuff of with a razor spray it with the silicon gasket removal spray, let sit for 20-45ish minutes( best to leave over night if possible), and either brass wire brush of scotch right and maybe a little help from pocket screw driver if you're careful 😂

I use a brash brush wheel on a drill, works like a dream and you can get them for like $5. it gets everything off for me and doesn't gouge the aluminum that much, if at all. I've never had leaking issues

I’ve found spraying brake cleaner on RTV then hitting it with the wire brush workes pretty well. I know I’m fairly late on this video lol.

Thanks for suffering through that for us so we don't waste time and money. My problem is the sealant left on the engine in the rounded corners where I don't want it falling down into the internals. Straight razors don't do so well in those tight spaces.

Tried WD-40 and a razor blade on air intake manifold and throttle body. Working well... But yeah it takes a while to finish up. It is looking a lot better now and after a few more scrapes, it is ready for a new gasket. I could have wasted hours using the drill which I already tried on other car parts. Razor blade and WD-40 was fastest and cleanest way to get the RTV off the engine parts for me.

I just bought a tube of Permatex RTV SI gasket remover. You are correct. It's a gel that sticks to nothing. I see a comment a year ago that said it spread like RTV, but for me, stuck to nothing. I'll be returning the place I bought it for a refund. Perhaps it's old product or product that froze in transit. Dunno. Amazon comments were thumbs down for the most part. Goo Gone next.

If you use a solvent, you need to let it work for a few minutes. I saw a guy who was showing how to remove rtv silicones. He had a bunch of bolts covered in old rtv that he dunked in gasoline for 15 minutes. The rtv literally was falling off. And for the roloc bristle discs, I am fairly sure you can use all of the plastic roloc discs. Even the yellow and green. I received my ASE certification a few months ago and my instructor, who has been an ASE certified master tech for over 10 years, told us to use the yellow and green discs. They don't damage the surface of the aluminum.
@alsavage17 ай бұрын
My experience with Rolocs is that if you're using them at the recommended speed (the 2" are rated to 25,000 RPM) the green will instantly eat aluminum. The white kind of polishes aluminum. Maybe if you're using it in a drill, which is a lot slower than they're designed for, the grit difference doesn't matter, but it sure does at normal speeds.

They might not damage aluminum but the particles that come off as the disk wears out can get in oil pass through the oil filter and chew up crank and main barings so dose rock disk it was a big deal in the late 90 and early 2000 every seminar was warning us techs but u can use wire wheel cups and such it polish aluminum to shine insted of damage and if a wire comes off on the engin it cant pass through the oil filter

I'm in the process of doing my cylinder head gasket on a Prius and dreaded cleaning the RTV on the timing chain cover and around the timing chain housing...I did the Wd40...Goo gone...Acetone... wire brush...too much elbow grease....then my last resort was good old gasoline in which I highly doubt it...Pour some on the rag and it started to dissolve as I rubbed it ...so then I went to the Dollar store bought a pack of Green Nylon scrub ...the one that come in 5pack the one with no yellow sponge in it and a spray bottle for the gasoline.......just spray cut out big chunk RTV...then spray as you scrub with the Green ... You'll be done in no time ....and the bolts with RTV use an small water bottle leave in their for an hour or so then cut the water bottle in half and RTV just peels off the bolts

Honestly acetone and a razor works pretty fast and then you hit it with a brass brush and microfiber towel for the smaller stuff.

Don't be so quick to give up on the roloc bristle disk. Your drill doesn't spin fast enough to make it effective. I use them all the time, and they work much better/faster than a razor blade.
@Southworth1386 жыл бұрын
I use the Roloc on a air-angle die grinder and it works beautifully. It works best on the high RPM that the die grinder provides. Green for steel/cast iron, white for aluminum.

You're right about the razor blade and WD-40. I have construction-grade scrapers. I also used soft wire bristles and a drill for areas difficult to scrape off. Everything looks good now. I am curious if it fixes the vacuum leaks 100%. Will find out tomorrow.

I see this video is old. However, I'm about to tackle the job of replacing my gasket that the previous owner caked in rtv. I've not yet attempted disassembling the gasket cover but I assume its going to be a pain to remove with all that rtv. Did you run into issues getting that cover off of the engine? If so, any tips? I'm concerned I'm going to damage it during the removal.

My rear light has rtv around the light seal as i had a water leak, How ever i need to replace the light unit so i have to remove the rtv from the cars paint work do you think a hair dryer would help to soften it up a little thanks for any feed back by the way im from the UK.

No i had to replace the rear light unit, the rtv was a nightmare to get off i ended up having too sand it off and rubbing down and respray the light area only but leak is still there and its doing my head in though its not as bad im thinking it could be some where , where the body work panels fit together im sealing this and that clutching at straws im getting a small amount of water right in the corner under the tail light when i pull the interior away you can see the water is coming from the light area im going to try some more filling next week as im off work for a week and see how i get on failing that looks like a garage job zzzzzzzzz.

@1:02 Brass is harder than aluminum, not softer. The Roloc discs work a _lot_ better in a right angle die grinder than in a drill; they like high rotational speed.

Use a razor blade on the transmission pan surface that has the RTV on it? Same for the transmission surface? Isn't that risking damage to either of those surfaces? How about a PLASTIC putty knife instead?
