Obviously there's a reason Jose doesn't start his own business. Otherwise he would have done it. Jose won't be able to sell the jobs Tigren sells. Sales is a high skill, few have it, which is why most small contractors stay small. Tigren has all the connections : building developers, General Contractors building homes, Architects referrals, that T built up over time. Jose has none of that. Jose will make more money sticking with Tigren. Jose would take a major pay cut going out on his own for the first few years.

You forgot about how sometimes the subcontractor can be better than the company. Once, while I was working for a company on a patio project, a subcontractor on-site provided correct directions when the company failed to do so. Together, we solved the issue. However, when the boss arrived, he was furious about the potential loss of money and showed little concern for doing what was right. Taking responsibility, I informed him that the mistake was mine, which ultimately cost me a week's salary. Nevertheless, I decided to quit on the spot. If you're a homeowner, I strongly recommend hiring someone you can trust, as many companies prioritize profit over quality work and integrity. Remember, if you still care for humanity, always pursue what is the right thing to do, because it will eventually pay off."

I don't use subs, unless absolutely necessary (plumbers-gas & electricians). If I need a sub I introduce them to the client and have the sub contract with the client. If the client insists it goes through my company, that's a 40% markup. Who ever pulls the building permit is liable.
@TheBUGZNTA

Yup I do it the same way. I used to try and sub people out but 9/10 its not worth it. At most ill give the client a phone number and tell them its between them and the other contractor.

Different building code laws and business laws in Texas vs California. Also landscaping is a C27 License in California, vs any work done on a house or in a house isn't covered by a C27 landscaping license. You'll want to look into your states contracting and consumer protection laws. Which will be different than California laws. Perhaps ask a contractor in Texas.

Overtime in California is anything over 40 hours a week, then it's time and a half. Typically for residential construction you want to only work 8 hours not only to stay in budget for your business, but also for your clients family and the neighborhood your working in. The majority of residential contractors work 8-5. 50 hours a week is common for commercial work, rare for residential work.

@Silicon Valley Life 2.0 I have 4 retirement homes that I look after and 18 private clients. I'm looking to bring someone in to look after them for me at £15 an hour while I concentrate on building up my new lawns and lawn restoration company. £15 per hour to someone who is half decent and new is good, training, opportunities to get involved in bigger projects and a growing waiting list. Then you have to raise what you offer. Do this. Figure out how much rent costs for your workers, how much is a monthly food budget, automobile and insurance, medical insurance- basic living costs and add 20%. That's how much you have to pay. Here in Silicon Valley, San Jose California minimum wage is $15.00 per.hour. yet basic living costs commands $25.00 an hour. For us in the landscaping industry we have to pay $25.00 an hour to attract anyone willing to do this grunt work in the modern high tech age. Or get yourself a dumb girlfriend and have her work for you.
