What's the difference between two of the most popular and best selling single malt scotch whiskies on the market? Glenlivet 12 vs Glenfiddich 12.
#Glenlivet #Glenfiddich #Scotch
Scores:
After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
88-92.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
93-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
96+ - The meaning of life.

Interesting take. I find Glenfiddich very sharp and 'spirity' (essentially what I don't like in a Scotch) but nice after a few smoke bombs for its pearyness (yh, that's a word I just made up). Much prefer the softness and floral notes in the Glenlivet. Wish I could get either at the kind of prices other commenters mention and I live in the UK!

Interesting. I'm a bottle-and-a-half deep into Glenfiddich 12 and have yet to find a chocolate note. I tend to just find pear, vanilla, and malt with the 40%abv being painfully obvious. (I'll probably find the chocolate/sherry now that you've pointed it out.) Glenlivet 12, on the other hand, drinks more like 43%abv for me. Maybe it's the citrus notes. Maybe Americans are just suckers for Glenlivet. At any rate, I find it a bit harsh to deduct multiple value points for a single malt Scotch at $27. I consider them decent values even at $30-35. Appreciate the perspective. Cheers.

Going back to my experiences back in the 1980s, I tried the Glenfiddich 12 because single malts were supposed to be better than Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 and Wiser's Deluxe, and it was the favorite drink of a scientist in a novel, Ah! impressionable youth... I bought a bottle and fell in love with it instantly... So there I was working in the warehouse with someone who was a bit older and more experienced than me telling me how Glenlivet was superior to Glenfiddich, and I bought into it, don't forget that I was in my early twenties and impressionable, so I got a bottle... It was the absolute nectar of the Gods and Titans to me! Freaking heavenly!!! Now, well, some 35 years later, it's interesting that I can still be blown away by an exceptional dram, but it's quite infrequent that the label has the names of Glenfiddich or Glenlivet on it... I had a Glenlivet 18 recently, that I rather liked.

I think I'll disagree on whiskey lovers not going back to these two. Certainly nothing I pour when I'm planning on really digging in and focusing on a whiskey, but, they're both good options for a starter whiskey for the night to wake up your palate, or, for a "I just want to sip on a whiskey" type drinking. At the price you're talking about, that's WAY too much. I find either of those under $30 US, which makes a difference.

Wow I can't believe the prices on these. Both sell for just under 50 USD in my area. Glenlivet was the first scotch I had (which was this year) and then the very next was lagavullin which turned me onto scotch hardcore. I just picked up a bottle of Glenfiddich the other day and I have to say I personally prefer it much more than the Glenlivet. I definitely prefer a much more complex whiskey and as far as pricing goes I've gotten highland Park 12, Laphroaig 10 and ardbeg 10 all for about the same price so I'd definitely repeat purchase those. Agreed good sir! I find the GL12 to be pretty basic. GF12 is also basic, but I get more interesting apple fruit and malt from the GF12. It's my choice for the cheap house single malt to have around for when it's needed, along with occasional monkey shoulder, Dewar's 12/15, etc. (Whatever is cheapest decent Scotch at the moment). Works alright as a palate-calibrating mini dram before progressing to more interesting stuff. These are both 45-50 dollar range in Kansas. Prefer the clean apple & orchard fruits in the Glenlivet 12 to the Glenfiddich which comes across a bit muddled in comparison. That said I have not bought a bottle of either in some time nor have plans too. I have a “wondering palate” that has moved on!

Speyside, I've got livet 12, fidich 12, macallan 12, and morangie 10 in my varied collection of nearly 30 bottles. fidich is my fave, livet is my least, macallan is a really close second, morangie isn't bad, but it's just not as good as fidich or macallan. I'm not all that interested in age statements, as it kinda wrecks my wallet at the moment. i think I'd still go cheap scotch over good bourbon though, I've got like 6 bottles of bourbon in my collection and the only one I like is elijah craig, I'll prolly buy a bottle of angel's envy and call it a day with them.

Hi Jeremy, I just opened a Singleton Glen Ord Signature. Now I think you may call this boring and nothing, simple and not much going on as I’ve discoverd it now. Compared to Glenfidditch Reserved cask or even Glenfidditch 12 y.o they have more complexity, richness and full bodied. My bad choice.now that explains why you’re not that big on Glen Ord and all those Glens whiskeys. 😁

I think the Glenfiddich 12 isn't bad for what it is or sets out to do. It's wishy washy at 40% and uses refill casks for sure but I'm no big fan of Highland Park 12 or Old Pulteney 12 which also have 40% abv. These companies are doing a different job to what whisky geeks like us want. They make a fortune from the occasional whisky drinker and are extremely successful at that. We have to remember that whisky connoisseurs are a tiny minority of the whisky drinking community and what we think is irrelevant to their sales. I started drinking whisky when I was about 16/17 years old with this sort of stuff. This is the best you get in most pubs, bars and restaurants in the U.K. Other than that we are in agreement. Cheers Jeremy. WT

That extra 3% in the Highland Park makes all the difference to me. Not only in the whisky itself but because I'm so upset they rip-off U.K consumers I can't bring myself to buy it again. Same is true for Laphroaig 10.

where on earth do you find such low prices? those two can not be found for less than $50-60 in canada ,,i find it very hard to believe that even in the US you can find them less than $30,,anyways i am mostly used to blended scotch but i tried the glenfiddich 12 and its like i never had whisky before ,taste was completely alien to me being a single malt,,i liked the pear aroma but i noticed what i can only describe as like a faint musk or eau de cologne and the taste was similarly dry and spirity i am thinking this was from the oak wood but like i said i never tasted that before perhaps because it is much less in a blend to pick up ,it take several sips to find flavors,i am sure its good stuff for the connoisseurs but its not my cup of tea and not a whisky i can drink at ease,,a while back i was digging around in my dads old booze cabinet and found a few treasures,,two chartreuse bottles yellow and green and one glenlivet 12,,one day i hope to crack it open and hopefully enjoy it a bit more than the feddich but these bottle have been stored for like over 25 years so they may taste quite different than todays production of them

Nice one Jeramy. I also prefer the glenfiddich 12 to the glenlivet 12. I know a lot of people keep either around as a palate warmup/reset dram, but I generally only have them at bars (that don’t stock much whisky). My preferred “easy sippers” are the Old Pulteney 12, glencadam 10 & Glenmorangie 10. The Glenmorangie 10 is the exact same price and much more flavorful imo. Pulteney & glencadams are like $10-$15 more but worth it for sure.

It has only been the last year that I discovered Laphroaig and fell in love with Peated Scotch. This has revived my interest in Single Malt and Blended Malts from around the world. Also, living in Ontario with insane pricing did not help my attitude.

I got a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 for Christmas. It's a fine whiskey. Very drinkable. But, for my money, I feel like there are better scotches. I'm a big fan of bigger, peatier flavours. Those bottles are around 60 Canadian dollars at my LCBO. For less than that, I can get a bottle of Woodford Reserve that I'm going to enjoy more. On the other side of that, I can spend a bit more and get a bottle of Laphroiag, so Glenfiddich 12 isn't something that I'd spend my own money on.

“I dont want to come across as a whisky snob” unfortunately thats exactly how you come across. Unusual as we gave enjoyed many of your videos but the tone and arrogance to deride both these Whisky’s and assume anyone drinking them is in poor taste. We have around 800 bottles in our collection ranging from basic blends to 30 plus year old single casks and about 120 or so SMWS bottles but regularly return to whiskys like these and these exact Whisky’s. We are not be so arrogant as to say someone with any experience would not come back to one of these. We do. We enjoy going back to basics thanks regularly testing and trying base malts both to see the state if play and a palette reset. We introduce many people to whisky via basic cheap malts like these. If your going to compare 12 year old base line malts and “expect” or demand a similar experience to a cask strength SMWS release you are being unfair on both. Arrogant statements and assumptions littering your “review” left both of us thinking “this is exactly how you DONT review a whisky”. Any whisky...

I may have misspoke in assuming these whiskies were a stepping stone that people don't revisit. That was my opinion, and I shouldn't have assumed it was everyone's (these are the best selling distilleries for a reason). But I stand by my review. These are bland, basic, and uninteresting to me.
