I love the new compass trailhawk. Purchased mine in September. I bought one that came out as a 2017 model and got a great price for a fully loaded one. It is well mannered on and off road. Can’t wait for winter in NY to drive in the snow.

I just got the Compass Trail Hawk and was considering the RAV4 Adventure as well and did some deep dives.. as I am a fan of Toyota as well and own the 4Runner. First related to Cost, which I believe was misstated in this video or maybe it was just a "Timing thing", but The Compass actually came in Cheaper! then the RAV4, and overall you got much more for your money related to 4 wheel Drive systems and overall features of the vehicle , which for the Money spent on Compass was a big WOW!! With incentives and discounts ... mine was 27,500 pretty loaded ... that does not include tags and taxes... Vehicle is solid.... I do a lot of Fly Fishing in the Mountains of AZ and this will be great for that, as well as Having a Kayak with Kayak trailer... and with the 2000lb towing capacity , this will pull it no problem.....

@@Tsalinger a rav 4 and 4 grand puts you in wrangler territory. Want to play that game? I think not. Not to mention this was compared to a compass, which isn't even in the same class with the Rav4, the Cherokee is, and the Cherokee Trailhawk eats rav4's for breakfast and shits out the crap plastic bumpers at lunch. The center differential in a Rav isn't a dif lock, it just means it's in AWD, which on the Rav is absolute trash. The compass and cherokee both have a locking rear differential. Comparing a Rav to any of the Trailhawk offerings from Jeep is funny, as you see how much of a mommy mall wagon a Rav actually is.

Traction control, all it takes to transform the rav4 into a decent off roader is an effective traction control system, why isn’t it braking the slipping wheel ? Is it that hard to integrate a software that brakes a freely spinning wheel ? it really frustrating to see the wheel spinning knowing that it is supposed to have a tcs and it takes nothing to put it in a car, so ehy didn’t they ? ( plus a low range gearbox i would have call it great off roader )

To me, the best thing about the Rav4 Adventure is the upgraded tow package which isn't mentioned in this video...3500lb cap.
@PatrickRich
@PatrickRich 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. This is the main selling point and its not hammered home nearly enough. To get that in the Jeep you have to step up to the Cherokee V6. Granted, I wouldn't want to tow with a rav4, but that you can is something, especially in this class of 1500-2000 max. Having a 3500 lb limit means being able to buy a 2800 lb popup trail or boat without moving up a class which means a lot to a lot of people.

The Toyota also had a low speed 4WD lock mode that was on the left of the steering wheel. It can be seen at 1:20 in the video. Was this engaged when the Toyota was spinning? If not, it could have helped were it utilized. Possibly not, but such functions could bridge the gap a little between the Toyota and Jeep.

Hi there. The video is pretty consistent with my RAV4 experience. I had a subaru imprezza before the RAV and couldn't believe how much different the two were. It was an older RAV 4, but the traction control was very invasive. The lock button was little help.

DarthRegis yes it would’ve helped, I had a RAV4 Platinum AWD and took it on some paths that were worse than that. Locking the diff. help quite a bit also I noticed he had traction control still on which if turned off would’ve helped even if he didn’t lock the diff.
@cgreeneblue

Yes agreed, in everything I have seen the RAV4 has trouble transferring power side to side which is one reason that keeps me from buying it. If they just gave it a similar "atrac" mode like the 4-runner it would solve that problem. the 4-runner models with open diffs (regular SR5) have the same struggle until atrac is activated and then they function almost like they have locking diffs. I believe all it is is software to better manage the brake calipers on the slipping wheel and transfer power to the opposite side with grip. Why can't that or a similar thing be done for the RAV4? its just a matter of programming as far as I can tell.
@bigfatengineer
@bigfatengineer 6 жыл бұрын
I should have clarified that by saying "low speed" was that it could only be engaged at speeds less than about 50 km/hr (30 mph). I understand that it's not "4-LO", nor did I mean to imply that it was.

I would get the Jeep hands down. The Rav just seems like they slapped a few things on and called it an adventure to grab a little more $$$. Sure Toyota has the heritage but not with the Rav. The Compass you can tell they put more thought into it at least from an off road perspective the Toyota will probably last longer. I have always liked the Compass it doesnt they to be something it's not unlike the new Cherokee that looks nothing like a Cherokee...

I love the RAV4 but the problem I have with it the 4th Gen RAV4’s is the fact that Toyota took out the 3.5L V6 269HP that was in the 3rd Gen. Toyota can build a nice 4th Gen RAV4 but it won’t be able to beat a Subaru Crosstrek or a Forester on off-roading. Toyota should have kept the 3.5L V6 that would have been plenty of power for the RAV4 Adventure. To me I can test drive one but it’s not going to have the same power as I would like so I am going to stick to a 3rd Gen RAV4 with the V6. You guys did a Review mashup of the RAV4 vs the Forster and to me When Toyota released the 2013 4th Gen it kind of was a let down to me and it turned me away going to a Subaru. Because Toyota took away things that made the RAV4 look like a RAV4. Sure the 4th Gen design is nice but a Traditional RAV4 has the spare on the back. Which Toyota took out, plus the take out of the V6 just for a 4 cylinder to me sucks. One thing I do have to say is on a positive side is that the RAV4 have better technology package.

I would buy a 4Runner over a Land Cruiser in America for trails. Another point is, Jeep DOES sell the New Compass with 4x4 (AWD) and the 6spd manual transaxle. I own one. So just because it's a 4x4 version does not mean you get the 9spd auto. Trailhawk trims only come with the 9spd auto.

Phuong Vo Roman loves his Jeeps and his Fords. Most others seem to be just there as comparison rides to those two brands, In truth, he has to run what’s available and Mopar and Ford seem to be more generous with test vehicles. In a recent mashup he had to resort to a viewer’s Chevy CRZ for the comparison. Apparently, GM doesn’t like to have their vehicles in mashups. The CRZ was really impressive and Roman gave it and the viewer who leant it to TFL Truck due credit.

I was told by co-workers that Japanese is more reliable and worth more when older. Also Toyota is well ahead of GM in sales and also Rav4s sold over 400.000 each year for the last couple of years. Besides the wife and I like the Rav4 Trail. Also, if people purchase Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda etc. there must be a reason for that.

For real Off Road adventure go with the Toyota Land Cruiser, Tacoma TRD PRO and Wrangler, really Roman? How could you leave out the ZR2? Power Wagon, Raptor ext. ext. ? But you could compare the Compass Sport 4x4 against any stove RAV4 and come out ahead, anywhere! Or for the same price as that Mall Adventure addition RAV4, get what I did, a Jeep Cherokee TrailHawk V6, that for 31k out the door, with a great deal from my local Jeep dealer, it came with the 911/SOS/Nav UCONNECT 8.2” system, cold weather package (heated seats, steering wheel and engine oil heater), plus the factory tow package, that included the hitch and wiring, heavy duty trans cooler and engine oil cooler, with lower final gearing, 3:55 instead of 3:23. I dare any RAV4, or any other SUV in the same class to compare with how I use my Cherokee, from running the beaches to the many trails I find in my travels, to towing my 4,000 lbs travel trailer, all over the east coast! While getting 14 mpg towing at the speed limits, plus 20 city 28 hyw, while keeping with the flow of traffic at a soft pace. In comfort and never having any issues or problems, other than the two recalls performed over a couple hr. For the transmission reflash and the UCONNECT reflash at my dealer, after which they washed and vacuumed my Jeep! At first I was worried about all the stuff you read and watch about all the transmission issues and stuff about the Cherokee, but after 2 years and 8 mo. and 63,000 Miles of trouble free service I guess all that is rubbish or I got s good one. I am looking forward to seeing the new Grand Cherokee TrailHawk Hemi in a while.

but if you put all terrain tires, I bet the Rav4 could do it, with less momentum. Also, why kind of Bird was that?

After owning FCA vehicles, I’d go for the Toyota. Jeep is a nicer car but the quality build is much better on the Toyota.

Mr_ NutZ Toyota is adding apple car play in 2019. No android auto. U think they have better quality. That’s wrong. They only thing there good at is actually making a car in general.

Many sales people have noooo idea about the vehicles. Kinda sad. When I worked at a Honda dealer I overheard a long time sales guy telling someone vtec was "like a turbo" and I couldn't believe it, so wrong in every aspect. I can understand not knowing exactly how something works, but you should get an understanding of what customers will be buying and asking questions about.

If you really want to know its very similar to most systems in this class; A front transaxle with a PTO gearset that goes to a clutch pack can couple or decouple the rear driveshaft and axle as dictated by a computer. Its mostly FWD but can couple the rear axle as needed. Like most systems in this class it's designed as a traction aid and foul weather tool as such its light and is not made to handle continuous torque loads and heavy use.

Thank you! Yeah I bet it would easily overheat if it was given a high demand (similar to the Honda Ridgeline)

Lack of depth to this review, mention Cherokee & how these fit in? How the AWD/4WD systems function? Just horsepower, here’s some buttons, Compass more capable, boom done? Kinda leaving a lot on the table.

Most buyers dont take their Rav4s offroad but pls dont underestimate this little vehicle. A Rav4 AWD is pretty capable given a bit of lift and good tires.

News flash, I bought a Toyota 10 1/2 years ago for 28 grand put 140,000 miles on it and sold it for 14,000. My sister bought a Jeep SUV for the same as my Toyota, she put 90,000 miles on it and it was worth about 5 grand. So if you're not doing serious off roading where is you money better returned? Anyhow...both of these cars are family cars with a cool look and AWD. After 20 years in the car business most Toyota's return reliability and great value over the years... And the reliability is incredible. As for Jeep just the 4 WD Wrangler is a great off roader.

These lifted cars have now approached base 4runner pricing. Any version 4runner will easily outperform these unibody cars. A Wrangler can also outperform.

Something notable that I don’t think was mentioned, is that the RAV4 adventure has about 1500 Lbs More towing capability then the Jeep Compass. It says online that the jeep compass has a tow package capable of 2000 pounds but the RAV4 adventure has a tow package capable of 3500 pounds.

Pretty hard to justify looking at the Rav4 with everything else on the market (Mazda CX-5, Forester, Honda CRV, Ford Escape). Thing is pretty underwhelming, especially given the price.

If Toyota wanted to make a decently off-road capable version of the RAV4, they could. I don't get the point of this thing at all. I'm not even sure how it's supposed to "look like" an off-roader. The black stripe? The extra 1/2" ground clearance? Yeah, I don't see it.
