Interesting this video should pop up today. I just went to the ER 2 days ago thinking I was having an allergic reaction, as I've been taking on new food allergies, (it could have been as well, as I had swollen lips and tingling tongue), but also was very light-headed, woozy, having difficulty with my words when speaking and typing, had been feeling down and a little confused. I went to Urgent Care first, and they thought it could be a stroke as my BP was 191/90. The ER did every test in the book, and all were normal. Finally did a urinalysis and found that I had a UTI. I was shocked, as I had NO symptoms that I would recognize from having them when I was younger. I then found out that as we age, the symptoms can be more of the mental variety as opposed to physical. To the extremes of having hallucinations. I had no idea!!! This is really good to know for those with older family, friends, patients. A sudden mental change, like aggression, can be a sign to test for UTI.

Thank you for sharing this. It’s is such an important point. The symptoms of UTI’s in children and older adults can be very atypical and it’s definitely important to be aware of this, which is why I included this in the video. Thank you for the comment. I’m so glad you were able to get the care you needed.

Can you say more (or point to a resource) about how bacteria migrate (?) from the digestive tract to cause UTI's? Recently, my sister, her husband, and I had lunch with my father where my sister brought food from a restaurant. Within hours, both my father (84) and sister developed UTI's (highly temporally correlated), however neither I nor my brother-in-law did. I did not eat the same foods due to diet differences and I think the in-law had his own plate with different portions. Given this experience and hearing what you mentioned about how the bacteria can come from the digestive tract is the first I have heard of a linkage that would seemingly explain how both might have gotten UTI's at the same time with similar conditions. Just trying to learn how to advise my father on what to learn from the experience. He absolutely had the cognitive impacts you mention as it seems is often the more clear symptom of other infections in the elderly.

Thank you for the question. This is indeed quite a strange coincidence. Usually there is bacterial contamination at the urethra and bacteria travel up into the urinary tract. Here is a reference explaining possible causes: www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/kidneys-bladder-and-prostate/urinary-tract-infection-uti/

UTI may turn into Sepsis in some cases, especially in elderly, serious condition and death? Would taking Apple cider vinegar mixed in a glass of water or vinegar pills kill the bacteria?

Can UTI happen to men?

Yes, though not as common and as in women. Great question.
