What's the better deal... buying screenwash from a well known motor factors.. or getting it dispensed via one of the many machines found at petrol stations. One is definitely cheaper than the other.. the question is which...

I buy concentrate screen wash for £8.99 which you dilute by upto 10:1. This works out at 17.98p per ltr. Wow that's really interesting 😅

I was wondering the same thing as I also buy concentrate and dilute it down at 5:1 which does most of the year then 50:50 if it gets cold enough. I've found that the premium stuff also performs better at cleaning the windscreen.

I think 'ready to use' screenwash should be outlawed. You are literally being sold water. Not only that, but that water has to be transported, it takes several times the amount of fuel and takes up warehouse storage space, supermarket shelf space and truck space. It uses significantly more plastic too for the same reasons. It also means you run out of screenwash sooner and have to make more journeys sooner to be ripped off for buying water again. And the benefit is what? The 'inconvenience' of having to dilute it? The manufacturers obviously make more money by virtue of selling the consumer water, it seems that the manufacturers are the only ones with something to gain from this awful product. The best way to buy screen wash is in soluble tablet form. They are better in every possible way and ridiculously cheap. The first amazon result for me was 25 tablets for £13.60, each tablet makes 1 gallon (4.55L) of screen wash. That works out at 12p per litre. You can store them in your glove compartment without fear of them leaking and without them taking up any space to speak of.

Refractometer would be handier. It will tell you the antifreeze strength with just a couple drops of liquid

I was thinking the same thing as it does not matter how much it cost if it freezes in the tank or in the hoses. Although, I do not know how often that is a concern in the UK. Here it is a problem for a few months and I have had issues in the past with an old car that had spray nozzles on the wipers themselves which was great in the summer but not so in the winter since the heat from the engine could not reach the hoses to thaw them out. Best bet is to have a car with heated washer fluid hoses or a car with the nozzles directly above the engine.

The thing is that the Halfords stuff has a known freezing point, while the dispensed ones don't. In winter, that can be important. Especially if you don't have a heated windscreen, or want to hurry that along a bit.

Tesco also sell 2 litres of concentrate for about £2.50, which will then make something like 20L of wash. Cheapest by far and probably stronger than most of the dispenser ones.

Here in Denmark its best to wait until spring, when stores want to empty their stock of winter screen wash (-21c). Then you can get 3 liters in a plastic bag for about 1 pound. (Normally about 3 pound for the same amount) I stock up, buy 10 bags, and that will carry me through the year no problem. They do not have an expiraton date, so I just keep them in my garage and fill up the car as needed.

Same trick in Norway... Summer screenwash is a lot cheaper, with less anti-freeze agents. That said, I never bulk buy one I've not bought before... Boss saw a cheap deal at Jula (Scandinavian Halfords type store + a bit of B&Q on the side) and the smell even inside the van was AWFUL... As soon as I could I pretty much pumped out a good portion of the tank and added other stuff with less 🤑 indicing odours.

the trouble with cheap screenwash is that it tends to encourage the growth of gunge in the washer bottle which then blocks the strainer that the pump sucks through.

Oh, is that where the gunk comes from? My car suddenly quit doing screen washing during the first couple of years, and the filter turned out to be clogged with shite. The mechanics solved that by removing the filtery bit and sticking the housing back in.

There’s also the problem of incompatibility… if you mix different screenwashes, they can have weird reactions. One time, mine seemed to fill up with something the consistency and appearance of thin hair gel. My local garage said to always flush out with plenty of water before changing screenwash brands/types.

I would imagine it is down to water hardness. I would like to think the premix is produced with a controlled amount of mineral content. The pumps just dilute the concentrated stuff to what looks like varying degrees of strength, with probably just tap water (if you’re lucky). It’s a bit overkill but deionised water will prevent any limescale. Practice what I preach? Nope, I’m a cheapskate that runs bangers…damage has been done already.

One thing to consider is the reaction of your passengers when you blast the screen and they say, "How does your screenwash smell so nice?" It normally cists a fiver for 5 litres here, and if bought on a trade card it costs £3.50. However, you can buy the concentrate for around £4, which will make around 15 litres if memory serves me correctly.

Big omission - what about buying concentrate instead of the frivolous pre-mixed? It normally costs about the same and makes about 25l (depending on how much you dilute it)

I stopped at a BP on the m4 last winter to put screen wash in my lorry. I paid a pound and filled the 5 litre washer bottle, plus an empty 5l bottle I had in the cab. The machine was still running, so I sprayed off all the windows and mirrors to clean them, and it was still running! I keep meaning to stock up on empty bottles and go back, I reckon you could probably get 20 litres from it, maybe more

We don't have screen wash dispensers at stations in the US. But, just about every US gas station carries gallon jugs of wash for sale anyway, and it's cheaper than the UK price. Plus, there's usually a handy Walmart nearby that's even cheaper. I just carry a jug in my boot/trunk and top up every time I gas up.

Buy concentrate, mix based on your needs. Up here in Scotland last winter you needed -20c concentrate to have even half a chance of it not freezing up for days at a time. In summer, you can dilute it like mad.

Useful. But these things often contain some sort of anti-freeze constituent. It might be a little complicated to do at home but might be telling to see at what temperature the screenwash solutions froze at. Too much dilution, will freeze just below zero. Might not be too clever.

Not gonna lie, never really thought if it this way, but i do always use the RAIN-X Ready Mixed Screenwash Additive.. Now, Granted, It is only 5Ltrs and costs about £8.00 for the 5Ltr Tub, but it cleans the Windscreen well AND also adds a lovely layer/film of Wax to the Windscreen & Wipers which greatly helps with visibility & water beading in Torrential Downpours & Motorway Driving.. Loved The Gran Turismo Music.. Man of immpecible taste i see 👌🏻

Going to go to BP in future. Clearly the strongest screenwash, and at a reasonable price, and you get lots of it. Plus whenever I've bought screenwash from the shop, it's because my windscreen is dirty and I don't have any screenwash left. I haven't planned it. So I won't have a funnel to direct the screenwash into the vehicle. Thus the machine screenwash minimises the quantity of screenwash on the floor, the engine bay, and myself.

Last winter I ran out of screewash and the store is quite a drive away. I ended up knocking up 20 litres of DIY screenwash for a few £'s using what I had in the house. I used a litre of alcohol, a few good squirts of washing liquid and topped up with water and it worked well for me, I did have to pop in a couple drops of food colouring because my car sensors couldn't detect the level and complained about low levels.

Best value for money is go to your local garage… usually do it free of charge as good will & will be a good concentration level so when it goes below 0c it won’t freeze up and chase damage to washer pump/screen wash bottle or system. (Yes I do work in a garage) we never charge for services like tyre pressures or Screenwash top up and sometimes we get nice customers who tip for the service. Also another video idea is check the calibration of petrol station tyre pressure pumps… often get people who have just paid to use them but tyre pressures are all over the place

One thing to note, as of current, Halfords are selling their blue unscented screenwash at 10L for £7.98, working out to be around 80 per litre which is not much better, but puts it into perspective with the other brands also unscented stuff

As a Brit that lives in Australia for many years it never ceases to amaze me what you get charged for. Air at service stations (free here), free water. I’ve never seen a screen washer dispenser here. Most just fill them up with water and may buy a washer liquid at an auto store and add.

A garage filled my pick up screen wash with the cheap shit. The following week we had severe winter weather and the screen wash tank froze. Was able to drive 120 miles and it was still frozen. I use a mix of the Halfords -30 and -20 stuff in winter now. Never had a frozen washer since.

If you buy concentrate then you can vary the dilution depending on the season. Would be interesting to see how much you'd pay at a motorway service station for dispensed/5 litre container. I usually buy 5 litres of concentrate from my local Tesco but I can't remember how much I paid last time. As for plastic waste, our local council has a very effective roadside recycling scheme. Concentration is about the only thing that can't easily be tested - and yet, when you're bombing along the A308(M) in the persisting rain, that's when you'll find out which is the best. I did something similar in the Netherlands (years ago) and ended up always buying 5l concentrate bottles from that point onwards. This way, you get to control the concentration of your screenwash, not a corporate penny-pincher. One 5l container used at 5:1 concentration gives you a LOT of screenwash: add in about 10ml of domestic ammonia solution (hardware shop) to 4.5l of screenwash mix, with 0.5l of RainX does the job for me - year round, without having to change the mix. Halfords concentrate (5l) - 8.99 RainX additive (1l) - 8.99 Ammonia solution (500ml) - 1.20 Total for 5l Screenwash = 6.50 for 5l. Much more expensive, I agree - but with the RainX and the ammonia, the screen stays perfectly clear of grease, and you *barely ever* need to use your wipers in the rain, since the water beads up and blows off the screen. Don't have to pay for wipers that often, either! Give it a try 😇

Best options is to buy concentrated screenwash. You can get Holts' 1 litter concentrated screen wash for £1.99 and you supposed to mix with water 1:9. So, you get 4.5L for £1 (22p/L)

It is estimated that around 20% of Legionella cases come from screen wash bottles, this is why you need to ensure that the screen wash has suitable antibacterial properties, this also prevents the build up of sheets of algae and the cat piss stink you can get. I know from experience that some VW's have smaller spray jets that clog up with cheaper screen wash that use higher mineral content water. Lets not forget the known, or unknown, freezing point of the mix.

The thing is, those forecourt machines are set up for the user to dispense the screenwash straight into the car, not into a separate container. This means that most will not be using the full 5 litres, even if you could theoretically pump that much, as with BP. If you only need 1 litre to top up your car, you still pay the same amount, so the unit cost is much higher. Plus, there is no information about the quality of the fluid dispensed, nor its anti-freeze capability.

That's ok in summer but wouldn't chance the freezing point on those garage mixtures over the winter.

Excellent, more reasons to confuse the hell out of people when I drive to my local petrol station in my electric car. You did miss the true ripoff though. The screenwash they charge you for at a car service. No matter how full your washer bottle they always charge about 2 quid for "screenwash".

Do a freezing point test and test the specific gravity to give a better idea of what you are actually getting. The blue stuff could just be dye and the clear one could be 90% alcohol! If it freezes in your car because it is 99% water it could do damage!

I find that for Uk winters you want to look for the stuff rated for -20 to -10 range. The -5 stuff freezes at about 0 degrees in my experience. Worst when you're on the motorway at night and your washer fluid turns to ice the moment it touches the glass! Its also good to have some for frost/snow, so it actively melts the ice when you spray it.

Interesting information and valid point cost per unit is only as good as the quality of the unit being measured. Just because it's cheap is only good if it doesn't require 2x the amount to get the same effect.
